I generally don’t post reviews. Don’t know why - it’s just not my thing. Having had the pleasure of working with Jason in one of the Kinkonauts Saturday drop in dojos and to chat with him afterwards, I was quite excited when I found out he had written a book on teaching improv. On that day, Jason had stopped by to watch the class but when he saw that the class was too big for everyone to get a good experience, he took half the class into another of the studios to work with them. That’s just the kind of guy he is.
I’ve been teaching communication skills on and off for the better of 20 years. Teaching skills is hard. Teaching skills well is a gift. To walk in unprepared and teach the class that he did demonstrated a deep understanding of both skills teaching and subject matter. In short, this guy was no poser. He was the real deal.
This book is the same - it is the real deal. Jason’s approach reflects modern teaching and learning research. It also reflects his teaching style and philosophy. It emphasizes effectively and efficiently training improvisers to excel at their craft through focused and thoughtful preparation combined with equally focused feedback to the student during the course of the lesson.
If you can work with Jason, you should. You’ll grow both as an improviser and a teacher. If you can’t, buy this book and do yourself the favour of getting as much as you can from him vicariously. Or do both. I know I did.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

I have been teaching and performing improv for over 30 years. I even wrote a book about improv called "The Triangle of the Scene". This book really lays out a great, systematic way of teaching improv (and lots of other things) that I know, even after all this time, will make me a better teacher going into my next class. Thanks Jason.

As a 20 year classroom teacher, much of the advice in this short, compact book is spot on!I am recommending that the other teachers in our training center get this and read it.

I've been kind of coaching/teaching improv for a few years now and never had a great idea of how I was doing at it. As Jason mentions in this book, nobody really teaches improv teachers how to teach. This book does exactly that. It provides you with simple, easy to understand tools for assessing not only the performance of your students but also your own performance as a teacher. Setting measurable goals and designing objective-driven exercises has completely changed the way I view improv coaching. This is simply a must-read for any budding or even experienced improv coach, director, or teacher.

The Improv Book I Needed Most

This guide to training improvisers is right on the mark. A couple of times my methods were validated in a big way. But mostly I was jolted out of complacency! A must read for trainers of improvisers from middle-school to adults!
