The Screentime Solution: A Judgment-Free Guide to Becoming a Tech-Intentional Family Hardcover – January 9, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
A judgment-free guide for parents who want to better understand and balance family screentime in the digital age.
Author Emily Cherkin―aka The Screentime Consultant―has written a compelling and necessary book about parenting in the modern digital age. Unlike any previous generation, children’s excessive screen use today at home and at school impacts mental health and family relationships. Parents have concerns about the amount of time children spend on devices and want to do better. They’re just not sure what to do or where to start.
In The Screentime Solution, Emily teaches parents to become “tech-intentional”: using screen-based technologies to enhance, nurture, and align with family values while avoiding, delaying, or limiting screentime that interferes with healthy mental, physical, cognitive, and emotional development.
With humor, empathy, and experience, Emily invites parents to
• become tech-intentional, without feeling judged, shamed, or blamed;
• implement her research-supported, developmentally appropriate tools to find screentime balance; and
• build a movement around tech-intentionality (this is good for everyone―children and adults alike).
The Screentime Solution will remain useful even as technology changes because being tech-intentional is an approach that can―and should―remain a constant.

“It's not too late! You've got this! This is a clear and empathetic guide that parents can use to establish better screen habits with intention.”
—Anya Kamenetz, author of The Art of Screen Time and The Stolen Year
“Emily Cherkin's The Screentime Solution is truly empowering for parents who want to recalibrate so that social media and screens have a healthy place in their children’s lives, rather than controlling them. Cherkin tells you that you’re not alone—millions are trying to free themselves from the manipulation of Big Tech. Read this book and you’ll be confident that your family can create healthier relationships with technology, and you’ll have a blueprint for how to do it.”
—David Monahan, JD, campaign director of Fairplay
“Cherkin’s expertise in parenting kids of all ages in our tech revolution, especially ‘littles’ and ‘middles,’ shines in this wonderful book. She gives readers both the ‘why’ behind the importance of having healthy tech limits in the home and the ‘how’ by providing dozens of bite-size practical tips—one of my favorites is ‘live out loud.’ For the sake of helping your child thrive, as well as lowering your stress level, you owe it to yourself to read this book!”
—Delaney Ruston, MD, author of Parenting in the Screen Age and filmmaker of the Screenagers movies
“Emily brings academic rigor and empathy to a subject that no parent can avoid. She sees through Big Tech to uncover its manipulative marketing tactics and show parents and kids how they are being ‘played’ and preyed upon—for obscene profits. Emily empowers us all to fight back. No parent will ever look back and say, ‘I wish my kid spent more time online when they were growing up.’ Emily's book is the handbook you need to save your child's childhood.”
—Lisa Cline, founder of Safe Tech Workshop, cochair of the Screen Time Action Network, and cofounder of Student Data Privacy Project
“Emily hits the nail on the head in her book, The Screentime Solution! Parents are so confused today, and her book introduces practical, family-oriented ideas on how to tackle the screentime tiger that runs rampant through so many homes. Basing her suggestions on how to change together as a family using family values and a strong foundation of setting up communication in our homes is a game changer. So many of us find ourselves out in the cold, having to take on this battle alone. Emily has such great wisdom and grace as she allows us to all acknowledge our parenting flaws and how to incorporate them into our screentime balancing act.”
—Mary Eschen, creator of the Parenting Decoded podcast, speaker, and coach
“Cherkin speaks with the infectious voice of a confident parent and screentime expert. With wisdom gained from working with real families in the trenches on children’s screens, Cherkin provides practical solutions for you and your family. Most of all, she gives you the knowledge and courage you need to raise healthy kids today. Get this book!”
—Richard Freed, PhD, psychologist and author of Wired Child
“In the increasingly digital world that we are raising kids, this book is what every parent needs! The Screentime Solution maps out today's culture, how our kids are experiencing it, and offers practical tips that parents can use today to help raise self-sufficient, mentally healthy, strong individuals. Families will benefit for the sake of their kids after reading this timely book! This book needs to be in the hands of all parents ASAP!”
—Tessa Stuckey, The Mom Therapist, LMHC
"My favorite thing about Emily's approach to supporting families as they navigate the complexities of raising kids in a digital age is her honesty, her balance, and her nonjudgmental take on solution-driven changes that families can feel good about making. This book is a must-have resource for any parent seeking to raise healthy and thriving kids in today's highly digital world."
—Dr. Sarah Bren, clinical psychologist and host of the Securely Attached podcast
“As parents to three Gen Alpha children, the screentime struggle is real for me and my wife. We oftentimes feel like we're losing an unwinnable battle with technology. That said, Emily has taught us—and thousands of other parents—to try to rid ourselves of the shame we feel and give one another plenty of grace. Through more intentionality and ‘doing screentime together,’ this problem is starting to slowly feel solvable . . . thanks in large part to Emily's approach and resources.”
—Joey Katona, husband, parent, sales professional, and lifelong LA Dodgers baseball fan
“Parenting is a challenge. Insert the advent of smartphones and social media, and the parenting challenge increases tenfold. This is new territory and parents need help. Emily offers insight and practical steps to raising kids growing up alongside smart devices. Her voice is nonjudgmental, and often humorous, making this an enjoyable must-read for all families coexisting with screens in the home.”
—Shannon Langer, parent
“Emily Cherkin’s The Screentime Solution offers today’s parents an accessible, nonjudgmental guide to setting healthy boundaries around their children’s (and their own!) screen-based technology use. With deep empathy and drawing on a wealth of personal and professional experience, Cherkin shows parents how to become part of a tech-intentional family.”
—Katie Davis, EdD, associate professor, director of the Digital Youth Lab, University of Washington, and author of Technology's Child
“When it comes to setting boundaries around screens, we parents and childcare professionals have been winging it for years—and it hasn’t felt good. With no road map, most of us worry we’ve been either overly permissive or excessively restrictive. Finally, we have the guide we’ve been desperate for. Rooted in science and the principles of positive discipline, The Screentime Solution offers straightforward rationale and methods for setting healthful boundaries around screens, so we can better protect our kids and feel good about how we go about it.”
—Maggie C. Vaughan, LMFT, PhD, psychotherapist, founder/executive director of Happy Apple® NYC, and author of Depression Relief Journal
“So many parents feel overwhelmed and powerless as we watch the virtual world increasingly engulf our growing children's sense of self. Emily Cherkin shows us how and why it is so necessary to counter-influence the ever-present pressure and seemingly uncontrollable power that technology has over our lives. In this very relatable book, she provides a clear road map for how to parent through this time filled with unprecedented challenges and dangers, enabling us to guide our children through the ubiquitous effects that technology has on their mental and physical health, development, safety, self-esteem, and quality of life. Parents no longer have to navigate these rough waters alone—Emily has provided us with just the right tool at a time when we need it most.”
—Wendy Beth Rosen, MEd, author of The Hidden Link Between Vision and Learning: Why Millions of Learning-Disabled Children Are Misdiagnosed and School, the Seedbed of Society: A Reflection on the Path of Humanity through the Mind, Heart, and Soul of a Teacher
“Emily Cherkin is a clear-eyed guide to making tech decisions rooted both in your own values and in children's needs. Her advice to ‘live your tech life out loud’ is a game-changer.”
—Tracy Cutchlow, author of Zero to Five: 70 Essential Parenting Tips Based on Science
"A gifted consultant and expert on technology and its effects, Emily’s book provides thoughtful guidance to parents looking to cultivate a family culture of healthy technology use.”
—Amy P Tyson, MSW, LISW-S, cofounder and deputy director, Everyschool.org
"I would meaningfully recommend this book to any parent looking to set their child up for digital, physical, and emotional success. Yet again, Emily coaches us in the ways of tech-intentionality, and future generations and parents serve to benefit immensely from her digital brilliance."
—Emma Lembke, founder, Log Off Movement
“Thank goodness for Emily Cherkin! Without her steady guidance, thorough understanding of how tech impacts relationships, and passion for supporting families in becoming tech-intentional, we would be even more untethered at a time when families are in dire need of informed guidance and practical approaches to today's tech-related challenges. The Screentime Solution is an essential read for all of us."
—Beth Tubbs, LMFT
“As a cofounder of the Student Data Privacy Project along with Cherkin, I have always found her knowledge and insights to be both illuminating and valuable. Cherkin has now taken that knowledge, coupled it with her experiences and wisdom gained as a teacher and a parent, to write a book that is insightful and practical, action-oriented and timely. Cherkin has unmatched knowledge and expertise in helping both parents and children, having advocated for student privacy at the local, state, and federal levels, which she now has ably woven into a book that is accessible, interesting, and even fun, with occasional touches of humor. Definitely a must-read if you are a parent, an educator, a person interested in technology in the classroom, or even a student concerned about securing a good, safe, and privacy-sensitive education.”
—Joel Schwarz, J.D., CIPP, CDPSE, Albany Law School adjunct professor (cybercrime/cybersecurity/privacy)
“Emily was an outstanding middle school teacher, one of the hardest and most important jobs. Her communications were crystal clear and grounded in common sense, and she always prioritized student voice and agency. This book has those same characteristics, and you'll also find that Emily is fully empathetic to the challenges parents face in the ever-evolving landscape of kids and technology.”
—Fred Strong, former middle school principal, Seattle Academy

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024This book addresses many issues relating to screen time (social media, tech use in school, video games, etc) and explains how this is becoming such a concern in our society especially amongst kids. The author Emily Cherkin, does a great job of not judging parents who are struggling with this at home. We are all in the same boat and most of us grew up in a very different era with screen time use compared to our children today. Emily has done her research and uses points and statistics that are helpful and make you really think. I have taken steps as a parent to not only set limits and boundaries around screens with my own kids but also for myself. It's unreasonable to think that any of us can handle this on our own without support and this book does just that. A must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2024The Screentime Solution is a breath of fresh air in the household struggles with devices! Emily has done a masterful job of weaving smart research and practical application into a book that's compelling to read and far from preachy.
I particularly appreciated the opportunity to identify our family's values and base our "tech-intentional" choices on them. When the members of our household aligned on "fun" as a shared value, we discussed how we could use technology to have fun. And then one of my kids remembered the dormant XBOX Kinect device that allows us to play active games together! Instead of sitting and watching a family movie that evening, instead we bowled, played beach volleyball, and danced. It was an awesome, immediate use of the book's learning that indeed was fun for our whole family!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024I found The Screentime Solution by Emily Cherkin to be very interesting, well-researched, and packed with practical tips and tricks for avoiding excessive screentime. Cherkin includes sections about child development and what is appropriate for children at each stage in terms of screen usage. The author, who is known as the Screentime Consultant, discusses the importance of having your tech use be in line with your family values, which for most people means reducing screentime across the board in favor of real life interactions.
Cherkin compares what screen usage was like in the 80s versus what it has looked like in the 2010s. A great deal has changed in that twenty year period about screens, and being armed with this information about the discrepancies can help parents and caregivers make better decisions about their children's use of technology.
I believe this book would be beneficial to parents, caregivers, teachers, and those who are in the field of child development. We all play a role in our children's views, uses, and possible abuses when it comes to technology. None of us are perfect, but we can all become better when it comes to being what Emily Cherkin refers to as "tech-intentional."
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2024Emily did a fantastic job of breaking down the facts about excessive screen time and the negative impact it’s having on our kids, our families, our schools, and our communities. She has lots of excellent ideas to improve our relationships with tech, and I’d highly recommend that anyone who has children, works with children, or was once a child, read this book! 😊
