- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025World ends and gets scrambled. Random kid starts getting OP because he was dumped in a dungeon instead of the starter zone. He gets out and forces the region to start a village too soon. He then learns the neighborhood is full of powermongers and goes to seek his friends and causes more villages to crop up. Which causes more problems that he decides isn’t his responsibility. He resolves it somewhat though. Meanwhile everyone worships him because he’s OP.
Interesting listen. Great narrator. Unique System. Pretty good story. I do wonder why a college student worries about his friends but gave no thought to his family. Please enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2022So this litrpg is a very LONG read. Which, is great because it's a long GOOD read. Great pacing, excellent grammar and prose, a strong story and plot, and interesting system. Around the 75% mark of the book is where the author starts jumping to secondary characters, which frankly always annoys me. I like the focus to stay on the main character, but I know authors get bored and like to flex a bit, and since he did spend vast amounts of time with the main character I can forgive the minor wandering. The entire first part of the book is concentrated on the main characters growth from weak willed nobody to utter power house, and I loved every moment of it. The skill\stat system is actually a bit overkill at times and the sheer number of skills is a tad overwhelming. I realize this was his way to "game" the system and gain incredible power and stats, but honestly I started hoping the main char would just settle down and get his class already so I can see what his final build will end up as. The constant grinding of new skills and the pages and pages of listing them got annoying even for me, which is saying a lot since I love seeing a characters progression.
Over all this a fantastic first book and I can't wait to read the next in the series, especially if it's as long as this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2021I have mixed feelings about this series. Litrpg is a new-ish genre, and it's full of authors that get caught up in their fancy systems, but are actually poor writers in terms of prose, creating engaging characters, and structuring plot development in a way that makes sense. This author does enough right that I went ahead and read the rest of the chapters on Royal Road. That said, the main character, Randidly, is a bit obnoxious, a little dumb, and lacks any emotional intelligence. I found him to be very unlikeable, but it's a credit to the author that he made me dislike Randidly.
At first, I was interested in the skill development of the main character. But, at some point, that stopped. There were too many skills, and they weren't tied effectively to the character's actions in the novel. People have different tolerances for this though. But, by chapter 600 (via the Royal Road), I wasn't interested in the details of the skills at all, and just the character and plot development.
The author does a pretty good job of developing the side characters. But I'm not a fan of how the main character is developed. He's a bit like a one-dimensional anime character, where the changes to his mind-set are just introduced to drive the plot forward. The handling of Randidly's relationships with women are particularly contrived, and the author relies on the whole 'lacking emotional intelligence' facet to explain away some glaring inconsistencies.
Royal Road is one of those sites where authors write chapters, and sometimes have a defined pace. For example, their readers might expect them to write two chapters a week, or a chapter a day. I found this site after reading the kindle novel, and finding out book two wasn't released. These sorts of sites are great for creative feedback and motivation, but they also tend to encourage quantity over quality. As an author on this sort of site, you need to 'produce' chapters. There's nothing wrong with this, but from a practical perspective, quality tends to be less than it could be. Why? Remember the Game of Thrones and the Wheel of Time? How long did it take those authors to produce just one book. A long time. Producing polished writing is not easy.
Why do people keep reading litRPG despite the fact that there are much better writers in every other (sub) genre? Because it's fun to see the protagonist advance in the concrete, stats-based fashion that litRPG provides. One thing this author does especially well is the advancement system. Both the concepts behind the system, as well as the writing elements where the system is implemented. For the side characters, the class, paths, images etc. are pretty well meshed with the narrative; e.g., they gain a skill, and use it. But things are a bit out of control for the main character. It's alright for the first book, but the distance between the skills and the use in the narrative grows.
Ultimately, there are simply too many skills, stats, paths etc., and so they lose their meaning in the narrative. I find myself more interested in what Randidly will do next, and who he will interact with, than which route of advancement he's going to choose for the next round of pp. But, many of the chapters are just Randidly training a skill. After I ceased to care about the newest skill, these chapters were not interesting.
SPOILERS alert
So, Randidly was all, "oh no, my best friend Ace, ill do anything to find him." And then, what does Randidly do once he find him? Mostly ignore Ace, not give him a thought, and treat him like a sad dog. This wasn't very consistent.
Remember Lyra when Randidly finally confronted her after the creature? It didn't make a lot of sense to me as a reader. Sure, the plot needs to be moved forward, but more detail/resolution would have been nice here.
You keep introducing potential love interests for Randidly, based on his responses. Lyra, Helen, Tatiana, azriel etc. But the character is just inconsistent. For example, for whole 'arcs', he won't have a thought about Helen. And, for example, in your story, Randidly was interested in Tatiana, but suddenly Tatiana was "let's just be business friends" style. This is bad writing, and it's so contrived. You are a good writer, so stop with the garbage like that.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025I've put this series off for years , I'm glad I finally started it
Simply excellent fun that is well written
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021I read a lot of LitRPG.
1. Awkward MC total social midget. This sorta mopey MC is atleast strong. Confused but strong.
2. System style. Meaning boom there goes the world as you knew it better wise up and fight because " words are useless". The controlling force is much much more sinister ans vile than most.
3. Powers... abundant, varied (cutting vegetables), and applied really differently than most. Each character is unique the usual warrior, cleric, ranger selection is tossed on its ear with q-tip still attached. The crafting selection and relevance is nicely applied. The actual fighting is pretty good if overly repetitive at times. Once you decapitated one foe the second one needs something significant to need to covered in such detail.
4. World: /waffle probably the weakest part. Some people use guns for awhile... the author forgets how many people have guns in this country... when disaster hits they will all come out. The authour has people fighting without them the day after the monsters arrive.
Not really that big a deal.
If you liked defiance of the Fall...this one is for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected.
What a freaking absolute madness of genuineness. Really loved the concept, especially questioning himself but decides to do the deed anyway for the betterment of others is simply refreshing. The stats look good and felt happy to read.. A very good introduction to a new series. Will definitely continue this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story...
Almost gave this book a 3/5 for the whiny MC. Carried it through the entire book... Even showe up in the first 2% of the 2nd book. I'm how back to put it to 5/5. So far book 2 and 3 have redeemed him. This is an epic story!
- S.L.PerkinsReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 28, 2022
5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended
This book series (written at the point of the third book being out) is a good one if you like loner heros who refuse to give up and are badass while doing so. The MC goes through a lot in these books, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger... He's given some good opportunities at the start, but he does have to work for them, and he is aware that he needs to constantly keep moving forwards or others will catch up. He also has a habit of catching the ire of powerful beings, so there's also that.
Generally a good read, though it does get a little hard-going at time when the MC is really up against the wall.
