PreS-Gr 1—A young boy walks down to the seashore with his mother to search and dig for seashells. He discovers shells in many shapes and sizes, and even a couple objects that are not shells. He excitedly counts his treasures and upon returning home creates a display. Each shell is labeled, and the final page offers an array of fun facts about shells and shell-dwelling creatures. This book's illustrations are truly gorgeous, done in a highly detailed cut-paper collage. Bright, joyful colors and sand that appears to have a true "sandy" texture also contribute to the visual appeal. The rhyming text in this book is simple, though a couple of rhymes feel a tad forced: "I count other shells— five, six, seven, eight. My shells are curvy—never straight." The boy's mother provides her son and curious, beachcombing readers with some valuable insight. "This shell is a home," she explains as she holds up a snail. "Let's put it back to live in the sea." Discovering the purpose of shells for small marine animals may inspire some young readers to learn more, as might the beautiful variety of shells the boy displays at the end.     Elliot Kreloff is an award-winning designer and children’s book illustrator. His career as creative director for Scholastic Books, Disney Publishing Worldwide, MacMillan Publishing, Blue Apple Books, and his own studio, Design Five, has spanned over forty years. As an arts educator, he has taught at Parsons School of Design, New York Institute of Technology, Rutgers University and Fordham University. His books have been awarded Best Book of the Year by Child Magazine, and he has received numerous awards from various professional design organizations (Bookbinders Guild, Art Direction Magazine, Communication Arts and the Society of Illustrators). He is a graduate of Cooper Union and holds a Masters degree from Hunter College.

    Dianne Ochiltree has been writing stories and poems since she was a little girl. Today, she is a nationally recognized author of books for girls and boys, from toddlers to teens. Her picture book, LULL-A-BYE, LITTLE ONE has been a selection for the Dollywood Fourndation's national literacy program for several years. Her picture book for grades 1-3, MOLLY BY GOLLY! The Legend of Molly Williams, America's First Female Firefighter, received the Florida Book Awards Bronze Medal in the Children's Literature category in 2012. It was also selected for the ALA Amelia Bloomer list for feminist literature for young readers in that year. IT'S A FIREFLY NIGHT, her not-just-for-bedtime book for kids 3-7, was awarded the Silver Medal in children's literature in the 2013 Florida Book Awards. Her latest book, IT'S A SEASHELL DAY, was released in July 2015 from Blue Apple Books and has already received favorable reviews. Many of her earlier books have been translated into foreign language and Braille editions as well as audio and paperback versions.
