Wretched excess, rock stardom, and golf—from the man who invented shock rock

In this tell-all memoir, Alice Cooper speaks candidly about his life and career, including all the years of rock ’n’ roll history he’s been a part of, the addictions he faced, and the surprising ways he found redemption.

From a childhood spent as a minister’s son worshiping baseball and rock ’n’ roll; to days on the road with his band, working to make a name for themselves; to stardom and the insanity that came with it, including a quart-of-whiskey-a-day habit; to drying out at a sanitarium back in the late ’70s, Alice Cooper paints a rich and rockin’ portrait of his life and his battle against addiction—fought by getting up daily at 7 a.m. to play 36 holes of golf.

Alice tells hilarious, touching, and sometimes astounding stories about Led Zeppelin and the Doors, George Burns and Groucho Marx, John Daly and Tiger Woods . . . everyone is here from Dalí to Elvis to Arnold Palmer.

Alice Cooper, Golf Monster is the incredible story of someone who rose through the rock ’n’ roll ranks releasing platinum albums and selling out arenas with his legendary act—all while becoming one of the best celebrity golfers around.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Alice writes like he golfs: straight and right down the middle. Like a lot of us golf addicts, he's spent his fair share of his life getting out of the rough and back onto the green. If you're like me and only read like a book a year (OK, like every decade), this should be the one.”

—John Daly

“What a blast from the past, and such insight to the future!
Alice Cooper, Golf Monster shares Alice's personal life mission, interwoven with great stories and characters from the 60's through the present in Rock and Roll. Not to mention some wonderful golf tips and experiences, humorously presented. Thank you Alice, for a nice ride!”
—Michael Douglas, actor and creator of the Michael Douglas & Friends Charity Golf Tournament
“Few things are more surreal than playing golf with a guy named Alice. But by the time you reach the second tee, you realize that No More Mr. Nice Guy is one of the wittiest and engaging playing partners you've ever had. Plus, the guy can play! For those who aren't likely to experience the pleasure of a quiet, leisurely round with the man who spends his nights singing "School's been blown to pieces," this book provides the next best thing.”
—Steve Eubanks, author of
Golf Freek
“Debauchery, demons and divots! This is the only book I've ever read that should come in 3-D; the crazy stories come right at you from Sinatra to KISS to the Moscow Golf Club.”
—Gary McCord, author of
Golf for Dummies

What a fun ride! Who cannot love and respect this man? If you are successfully (or not!) battling an addiction, I think you will find a lot in here to relate and aspire to. Nothing preachy at all, this was HIS way. If you are a golfer, the reviews by the pros probably speak for themselves. I learned a lot about golf - and it was interesting!

For the pop culture fans - this book is a national treasure! There are lots of incredible anecdotes about many, many famous people. I had to pick my jaw up off the book numerous times. Raquel Welch aka Rocky?!?!?! John Lennon Keith Moon Peter Sellers Andy Warhol Jimmy Page Jack Benny and the hits just keep on comin'. The book has roadside trivia bombs planted throughout it. Alice on finally getting radio airplay - "Shep and his boys hit the phones, promoting "I'm Eighteen" to radio. One of the first deejays to play the song was a young jock in Missouri named Rush Limbaugh. Meanwhile, Rosalie Trombley..."

The thing that blows me away the most is how incredibly lucky it was that the Alice Cooper band met Shep Gordon and Bob Ezrin, and how incredibly smart the band was to give those two unknowns a chance and follow their direction. If a Very Famous Rock Icon (don't want to spoil it for anyone) and a couple of others had not shown up at a pool one day, or if Janis Joplin had decided not to give a man a fat lip one night, the world may never have known the wonderful band Alice Cooper. It makes my brain hurt, but my spiritual side says that it was divine direction.

I want more stories! There has got to be hundreds of more stories inside Alice's brain! Thousands!

Wow, what a fantastic book with all kinds of rock & roll history from my favorite rock star. Alice Cooper is among the Greatest musicians of all time, right up there with Plant, Lennon MCcartney, and Waters Gilmour because he has always worked his rear off and still does to be the best he can be. This book was a real eye opener to me seeing all that the man has been through. He is a Great song writer and singer and from what I understand, a Great golfer also. This book let me see that there is so much more to golf than I would have ever imagined and after reading it, my wife and I are seriously thinking of giving golf a try. I see the Coop on every tour and I can tell anyone who is curious, this guy puts on the best show ever and I see lots of concerts. All my friends have turned into Alice Cooper fans simply because all I had to do was take them to one of his shows. He Rocks, is witty, funny and a total inspiration. The golfing tips he gives in this book are totally awesome. Even though I have never golfed they make sense. I am so pleased that I purchased this book and I will keep it in my Alice Cooper memorabillia collection forever. Some day maybe I can even get the Coop to autograph it. What a Great Book.

"Alice Cooper, Golf Monster: A Rock 'n' Roller's 12 Steps to Becoming a Golf Addict", by Alice Cooper (and with Keith and Kent Zimmerman), is Cooper's autobiography, covering from his youth to the present day. Alice peaked in popularity in my pre-teen and early teen years, and while I knew many of his songs, he seemed to be a creepy, dark, almost satanic singer. Then, as I got older, I would see Alice on TV or hear of his other appearances off-stage, and he came off as a much different person than what he portrayed while on stage. So, I've always had a bit of curiosity about Cooper and finally went ahead and bought this book.

This book covers both Cooper's life and his addiction to golf, a healthy addiction that he claims saved his life from an alcohol addiction. You learn many interesting things about Alice ... how he came up with the group's name (which he later legally changed to be his own name); that what he's doing on stage is performing - the persona he portrays is an act, and do not represent his personal beliefs; and most surprisingly, that he's an active Christian.

Golf is tightly interwoven throughout the book, and many of his interesting anecdotes revolve around the game of golf. He quickly became so good at golf that other celebrities were asking his advice about the game, and this proficiency opened many doors to him both in the entertainment industry and in life itself. But it's written in such a way that non-golfers can also enjoy what he's talking about.

This is a quick, fun read, and by the end of it, you'll find that Alice is probably somebody you wish you could get to know better. Four stars.

I'm A longtime fan of music, and I have read My share of music biography's through the years. Everything from Kiss, Grand Funk Railroad, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Motley Crue to name A few. I have never read A biography as good as Alice Cooper's book! It is very well written and You can almost hear The Legend narrating the book Himself. It's A great read which bounces between Alice's history and His many incredible stories, to His golf tips, and back. Alice tackles pretty much everything including His Christian Faith, which may surprise some. His Fans, like Me, already know. Alice is A class act, who puts other Rockers to shame with constant caring and giving and the humble person that He really is. If You are A Cooper Fan, You should already have this. If Your A Rock Fan Who is looking for A very good read, this is Your book! I hope Alice writes another One!

2.0 out of 5 stars A totally self-centered guy, boring.

You would not even remember the names of the other member in the original Alice Cooper band after reading it. That shows the little importance it's given to them in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quick Read, Interesting Bio of A Rocker who Substitutes a Bad Addiction with a Good One
Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2017
Great quick read with lots of interesting pictures. Alice discloses the story of his rise to fame and the addictions that almost ruined his life. Interesting story on how his addiction to golf overcame his addiction to alcohol. I thought I'd gloss over the sections on golf, as I have no interest in golf, but they were actually interesting. This is a man who can excel in anything he applies himself to.Interesting antidotes about the famous people he crossed paths with, like Elvis and Raquel Welch, and his unlikely friendships with people like Groucho Marx.
I became an Alice fan in High School, then forgot about him for decades. In the mid-2000's I saw him at a concert with a bunch of other bands and he killed it. No rocker can put on a theatrical show like Alice. I was back on the fan wagon. After seeing him again in 2017, I ordered this book. A great quick interesting read.

I've been a fan of Alice Cooper for 30 years now & this book gave me an insight into the life of Alice. I'm not a keen golfer, so I found the reference to the game not as interesting. But aside from that, this book is very engaging. On the whole..brilliant!

3.0 out of 5 stars La thérapie par le golf
Reviewed in France on November 23, 2012
