A Christian's Pocket Guide to Mary offers a biblical account of Mary's character, contrasting this with the Roman Catholic traditions which have developed throughout history, distorting her nature from an obedient servant and worshipper of God to a worshipped saint herself. De Chirico writes with the authority of thorough research as well as personal experience of the traditions surrounding Mary which have become so integral to Roman Catholic worship.

Review

This is the book I have been searching for! De Chirico's A Christian's Pocket Guide to Mary is unique in clearly and succinctly bringing together in one place Mary in the Scriptures and Mary in the history of Christian thought and practice, right up to the present day.

-- Rachel Ciano (Lecturer in Church History at Sydney Missionary and Bible College; church–planter in a multicultural, urban area of Sydney.)

Leonardo De Chirico, one of the leading evangelical thinkers on Roman Catholicism, including its post-Vatican II phase, knows all the ins and outs of the history and theology of Catholicism, from years of study and first-hand experience in Padua and Rome. Against the temptation to think Mariology is just a side-show in Catholicism, he shows how it fits hand in glove with the Roman Church's doctrine of grace.

-- Paul Wells (Emeritus Professor, Faculté Jean Calvin, France and Editor in Chief of Unio cum Christo)

Leonardo De Chirico is one of my most trusted authorities on Roman Catholic doctrine. He has gained my confidence because he is always equally charitable, winsome, and well-informed. In this short book he demonstrates what the Roman Catholic Church teaches about Mary and aptly proves why so much of it is opposed to the plain teaching of the Bible. I heartily commend it to you.

-- Tim Challies (Author, ‘Seasons of Sorrow’)

Never before have I read a more masterfully written book on the subject. Leonardo De Chirico marries scholarship with an easily readable style that makes the book extremely useful both for personal and group studies. It is a concise and well researched masterpiece from one of the world's leading experts on Roman Catholicism and recommendable both to Catholics and Protestants who want to understand one of the most misunderstood and controversial issues in Church History.

-- José Hutter (Chairman of the Theological Commission of the Spanish Evangelical Alliance )

I bought this book just to see if the 1 star rating was warranted or if the reviewer was just a Roman Catholic who didn't enjoy the veneration of Mary to be questioned. Fortunately it was the latter. This book is a quick, concise, and balanced perspective on the subject of Mariology and its sociological development over the history of the Church. De Chirico shows the theology, history, and practice of Mariology and the lack of Biblical support it suffers from. Granted, that's not important to Roman Catholics, but to evangelicals who believe in Sola Scriptura (not to be confused with Solo Scriptura) the curious devotion Eastern and Roman Christians give to a relatively minor Biblical character needs to be explained and challenged when necessary. This book does just that and doesn't get bogged down in the weeds. It's a short book on purpose, and is as fair as a polemic like this can be and takes no potshots but also doesn't shy away from questioning the Biblical basis for the devotion of the Mother of Christ. It's a wonderful thing to love, admire, and emulate the Virgin Mary, but for Protestants who rest on the Scriptures, it's wise to steer clear of veneration, devotion, and borderline worship that - at best - distracts from the true Savior of the Church. I wouldn't say that "Protestants will eat this up," but they will at least understand the theology and practice of Mariology and how to respond to their Roman and Eastern brothers and sisters who disagree with them. I recommend it for anyone interested inthe topic, especially those who already venerate the Virgin Mary to at least better understand the evangelical position. You should read it and ignore the 1 star review. If you don't like it, you'll at least understand that it deserves better than 1 star.

I happen to personally know Dr Leonardo de Chirico – his heart for the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and his high academic standards of honesty in research and writing – so I naturally had very high expectations from this concise book on extremely controversial subject that touches the sensibilities of millions of believers professing to be seriously taking God and His word. My verdict? It even exceeded my expectations! This book is a masterpiece of dealing with the complex subject of Mariology with sobriety, respect and clarity in regard to biblical revelation about Mary, the sources and historical processes that contributed to the doctrines build around her, the current state and practice of Mary veneration in the Roman Catholic Church exemplified by a good insight into pontificates of the last three highly regarded popes, and suggestions for what is needed in the ecumenical dialog about this sensitive issue. The content of the book perfectly harmonizes with my own research on the subject and the experience I had as a person raised in the Roman Catholic Church in Poland. If you only have time to read one, brief, high quality volume on the subject you won’t find a better book to read than this one. Depending on your church background, you may agree with the author to a bigger or lesser degree, but you won’t be disappointed with the quality of his work and its versatility encapsulated in such concise, well organized work.

Pastor De Chirico writes a compelling study on the Roman Catholic doctrine of Mariology that demonstrates how unbiblical this teaching is. Writing in a Theologically clear and at the same time with academic depth, he describes how and why this doctrine permeated this apostate church. Pastor Leonardo also uses language that is non-confrontational, what is appropriate for this kind of work, which purpose is to enlighten and teach the wrongs that are made in this 'church'. Amazing and succinct work that I recommend for all Christians. Another resource I recommend is Pastor James White's Book: 'Mary-Another Redeemer?'.
