A sighting in the field is just one way birders can identify bird species. Observant nature-lovers can discover what birds are where by examining tracks, trails, and a variety of bird sign: discarded feathers, feeding leftovers and caches, pellets, nests, droppings, and skulls and bones. This fully illustrated guide--the first of its kind for North American birds--presents thorough and straightforward instruction for identifying bird families or individual species by careful examination of the unique sign they leave behind. It also offers keys to the birds' behavior in the wild.

Call me cynical but in the last twenty years I have seen field guide publishers recylce the same old info over and over again, just adding a new tabulature or color photos. The text is minimal and always leaves me wanting more.
Not so with this book! Mark and Eleanor have created something that goes well beyond any field guide currently on the market concerning birds! This stuff is new and never before seen except for experienced birders in the field. It is easy to use, fun to use and it will help anyone learn more about birds, their habits and sign. The photography is stunning as well.
I cannot over-recommend this book. Go get it, now!

Great book for figuring out what bird left markings or feathers. It’s very thorough with lots of photos and illustrations. Great book.

As a tracker, I find this book to be an invaluable reference. I have long thought that there was a need for this type of book as bird tracks have not been the focus of past tracking books. I find the illustrations and photos clearly laid out and easy to use to see details. There are sections on feathers, nests, feeding signs, skulls, scat, and more. I highly recommend this book to all trackers and naturalists and anyone who wants to be more aware of the world of nature around them. No other skill can give you that awareness of the natural world. This book will help you on your way to being a better tracker.

The information in this book is unique and well presented. The authors do a wonderful job describing tracks and sign left by many north American species. It’s a unique and rare look into the lives of birds.

Almost too much info - seems redundant. I wish book was available for regions of the US - such as Midwest - to cut down on the heft of the book.

This book is a must if you're spending a lot of time outdoors and want to learn about the birds out there. Mark Elbroch products excellent books on nature and I refer to them frequently. I love and use them so much that I have both the paperbacks and kindle editions of the books he's written. A great investment and very informative read.
