About the author
Joanne Tombrakos has been calling herself a storyteller since before it was the trendy thing to do. She has delivered thousands of pitches in every industry sector over the course of a successful twenty-five-year career that has included working at CBS, Time Warner Cable, and NY1 News as a media sales and marketing executive. She prides herself that she never sold anybody anything, but she did learn to tell a very convincing story that closed a lot of business.
A marketing and business strategist recognized as an expert in personal branding, she uses those same skills today as an Assistant Professor of Marketing at NYU’s School of Professional Studies and as an author. She sits on the board of the Paresa Collection and is the host of Marketing, Mindfulness, and Martinis, a podcast.
While she currently resides on the other side of the Hudson she is and always will consider herself a New Yorker.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2024Where do I start???? By now, I read the book twice and purposely saved my review until now to express the most honest and transparent opinion. Let me just say it was coincidentally the perfect timing that Professor Joanne launched this book, this book was everything I needed to guide me and recharge me to take myself to the next level in work and life! I was in need the wisdom, knowledge, and positive energy!
Last year I took on a new role that involves lots of presentations. Much of the information I had to deliver was very technical and “boring”. We often lose our audiences after a few minutes. We were not converting that means we are not delivering the messages correctly! It made me think about some of the knowledge and skills I’ve learned in my master's program and try to figure out what was missing. I had to admit I was struggling to find a solution to keep going. Not only because I decided to take on a role that was out of my expertise, but also because I did not have the right support. When I saw Professor Joanne released her book I immediately bought my copy and remembered her teaching us storytelling and how to use tools and frameworks to help us deliver a memorable and meaningful presentation. This book is a combination of Professor Joanne demonstrating her storytelling skills and how to use the right framework to draft your own story to catch the attention of the audience in the room. I witnessed how she does it in class and I want to strengthen myself!
The book is very easy to read! It made me tear up reading the prologue. Immediately drew me into wanting to finish reading the rest. Before getting into the actual framework, Professor Joanne set the scene with the foundation to help you understand how to sell without being “salesy”. You will learn to work on your pitch the right way so it delivers the right message without making the audience uncomfortable. You will also learn what tools might be helpful. what I enjoyed the most was learning from her stories and experiences! I don’t want to spill the tea here but the rest of the book will teach you the framework. How to craft your pitch and how to deliver it without actually “selling”!
“Everything is a pitch!” I never thought of it this way until I took Professor Joanne’s class at NYU. When you leave school and join the real world things get real! You don’t know when and where an opportunity will pop up so you have to be ready at all times! This book is your (my) resource and reminder and something to use as a “cheat” book. And most importantly, you will love and enjoy all the positive energy and all the great inspiration from the book!
Sharing is caring, this book is really for anyone who is looking for a change especially those who are presenters, managers, sales professionals, business leaders or you are simply in the process of job interviews. This book will change your life because it changed mine!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Before Crafting Your Pitch, my presentations were all over the place, without a proper structure and direction. Following the framework given by the author Joanne has truly helped me and my team in effectively transforming our pitches.
You'll see your attitude towards presentations change for the better. The 'Crafting Your Pitch' does what it claims, selling the art of pitching to you, and it does it so effortlessly. Must read, if you are constantly pitching, for students, businesses and about anyone - as everything we do is in someway a pitch!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2023Just as Shakespeare taught us that "all the world's a stage," the wise and wonderful NYU professor and marketing guru Joanne Tombrakos teaches us, in her terrific new book, that all our communications are a pitch. With this eye-opening revelation as its foundation, Joanne's "Crafting Your Pitch" is a masterclass in communication design and delivery that provides us with a storytelling framework -- and so much more! -- to help us maximize our impact and influence in any situation. A stellar storyteller herself, Joanne practices what she preaches and brings her concepts to life in an easy-to-read, personal and conversational style that feels part coffee chat and part classroom lecture. So, unlike many books that, once read, go up on the shelf to forever gather dust, I will be keeping my dog-eared and marked-up copy within arm's reach as a ready-reference handbook for years to come...as well as recommending it to every one of my NYU and Columbia leadership graduate students and executive coaching clients -- and to you.

Most people think of celebrities as influencers. The fact is, we are all influencers and the point of pitching is to convey a story of value.
This short, and easy to read book contains a framework to organize a compelling story.
Joann Tombrakos is a master story teller and her book belongs on the desk of everyone preparing an important proposal .

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024Having experienced the Real World class firsthand, this book feels like a detailed replay of the entire course. Since taking the class, I've incorporated the framework into every single one of my speeches, feeling more confident than ever. Joanne's direct rejection of templates in favor of a simple (yet effective) framework is what differentiates the book. Written by an industry professional and clinical professor actively engaged in the field, ensures its relevance and applicability. The book talks about universal principles of storytelling while acknowledging today’s world with social media, new technologies and very dynamic environments. I highly recommend this book to everyone because, as Joanne highlights, everything is a pitch!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2023Joanne has been a colleague of mine at NYU and I'm very familiar with her work. In this book she has managed to take the challenging task of telling stories and put it into a useable framework that clarifies and guides. Highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to tell 'their' story..which is basically everyone!
