"A deadly, dangerous, beautiful nightmare." ― Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End
For readers of Rachel Hawkins and We Were Never Here comes a searing vacation thriller set on a remote island in Thailand following two mysterious women, a charismatic group of expats, and the one murder poised to bring their paradise crashing down.
Welcome to paradise. We hope you survive your stay...
There are three rules to follow during a vacation at the famous Koh Sang Resort
1 – Leave the past behind.
When Cass sets foot on the coast of Thailand's world-famous party island, she's searching for an escape. With dark secrets following her every move, Koh Sang becomes the perfect place to hide.
2 - Always be careful of who you trust.
Now, years later, Cass is a local dive instructor alongside the Permanents, a group of expats who have claimed the island as their own. The Permanents don't linger on who they were before the island. Simply because, like Cass, they all have something to outrun.
3 – If someone discovers who you really are, run.
But suddenly, a dive student is found dead and paradise comes crashing down. Because this isn't the first mysterious death on the island, and it won't be the last. Someone knows who Cass is and they're ready to make sure justice is finally served.

The Resort was the perfect vacation read as it transports you to Thailand. While working at a resort, a group of young men and women become family. It is told from two main points of view: Brooke and Cass. Cass is part of this resort group and has been on the island for a while. Brooke is a travel blogger/influencer who recently arrived on the island. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and I had to reread parts to make sure I knew who was who.
After a hiker falls to her death, the island becomes a little cautious but when another tourist is found dead in the water things become dangerous. Brooke knows from experience that lies are being told to hide secrets. When she starts questioning these deaths, she puts her own life at risk.
I felt like I was on the island because the writing was detailed and descriptive but not wordy. I had suspicions about every character. They all seemed too perfect to run away and hide out on an island. I was going to rate this book 3.5 stars until the epilogue. The twist at the very end shocked me!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2025I’m honestly not sure what I expected from this novel. This book really had a ton of twists and turns and maybe I thought I was getting into something a little more supernatural, butt his wasn’t it. It’s more murder mystery than anything with creepy vibes that remind me of the island parities where people end up starving and dead.
There were a lot of things at play here and honestly, the whodunit wasn’t predictable at all. I was worried that it was going to be predictable, but it kind of came from left field, and I think that may have bothered me more than it wowed me. When things happen without warning in a novel, I kind of get turned off because… like… where did that even come from? It feels like those scenes are just written for shock factor without any evidence to back them up. That’s how I felt about the ending of this book, but I’ve read a lot of reviews from people who thought it was well executed soooo take from that what you will.
In terms of characters, you get a LOT of depth. Each of them felt layered (at least the main ones you follow around), and their backstories are so intricate that you wonder how long it took the author to come up with them. Also some backstories were less feasible than others, but I won’t get into that.
I think the main thing that bothered me with this book is the plot and the pacing. You are literally thrown around this novel without a care in the world and it makes you feel like you just stepped off of a carnival ride that made you lose your lunch. I never knew where the book was trying to lead me and I honestly never felt any urgency to get there. The pace itself was written like it was supposed to be fast, but came off more like it was just pretending to be in a race to the finish line when it was really stuck at a standstill.
Overall this really wasn’t a horrible book, but it wasn’t a good one either. The characters were very layered and interesting, but I was lost with the lack of direction and the pace that made me feel anything but thrilled. 2.5 out of 5 stars round to three for social platforms.
