The End of Try Try Again: Overcome Your Weight Loss and Exercise Struggles for Good Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Forget the idea that you have to sign on to a restrictive diet or rigorous exercise plan in order to lose some weight and feel more energetic. Discover how you can choose an acceptable lifestyle that balances desire with health. Find a way that allows YOU to be in control of your choices, and discover solutions that fit into YOUR life.

The End of Try Try Again starts with understanding how we form habits and why they can be so difficult to break. This book explains how our brains and bodies work so that we can work with them, not against them.

The End of Try Try Again shows you why some of our attitudes and beliefs don't serve us, and gives us access to a whole new way of thinking about diet and exercise.

Trying to follow a prescribed diet or exercise program often leads to resistance and rebellion!

The OLD messages can lead to such thoughts as:

"This diet will help me stay motivated because it will produce quick results."
"I guess last time I tried, I just wasn't motivated enough."
"I have to exercise hard to get the pounds off."
"Once I get started, I will figure out how far I want to go with this."

Unfortunately, we can get caught in a loop that doesn't show us the way out.

Based on extensive research, this book explains why making big changes to how we eat and exercise is complicated. Using the science of motivation, it lays out how to find deep motivation based on personal values, not passing fads. It then presents a clear, inspirational formula that is simple but can lead to life-changing results.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The first thing I thought when I picked up Kristen Carter's The End of Try Try Again was that it might provide a new nugget or two of helpful advice, but would otherwise be relegated to the stack of other diet books that may or may not be covered in dust in the back of my closet. Carter genuinely surprised me. This isn't a diet; it is a lifestyle adjustment that happens in a way that feels organic and more like a natural progression toward overcoming the struggle instead of band-aiding it. Habit changing might seem obvious but through Carter's accessible guidance on simply rethinking its advent and how those intentional small changes are practical enough to make success achievable, the landscape looks far less overwhelming and desolate. I can see this book applying to many facets of life beyond nutrition and exercise and believe other readers will feel the same.

Kristen Carter adopts a new approach to losing weight, asking her readers to focus on intrinsic motivation as well as extrinsic rewards. Negative self-talk, repetitive behavior, and poor attitudes are discussed. Carter has spent thirty years in fitness and nutrition and recognizes and understands weight gain and loss patterns. This book is inspirational and informative, listing statistics that will prompt readers to move forward with their weight loss efforts and enjoy the maximum health benefits to follow. The methods outlined should be applied over an extended period, as the improvements will only have a lasting impact if readers challenge themselves to make a positive and permanent lifestyle change.
The End of Try Try Again would be a great book to place in the motivational section of any library or bookstore. Whether a person needs to lose ten pounds or more, this could provide them with positive encouragement to take the first steps and keep walking the path that will lead to reduced weight and a healthier lifestyle.

The End of Try Try Again is a straightforward read with useful insights for beginning and sustaining a healthy lifestyle. I loved that it gets straight to the point and addresses the fundamental reason why many people abandon their goals. I appreciated that the work does not offer yet another diet plan but instead offers realistic ways for improving health and provides a list of accessible healthy foods that help prevent lifestyle diseases and other illnesses. The process it proposes is gradual and requires small, doable changes and hence it is more achievable. Kristen Carter provides an easy read with practical solutions for anyone who wants to improve their health or break negative habits. Readers will love its attainable techniques and informative content.

The End of Try Try Again truly delivers on its promise to show you how to overcome your weight loss and exercise struggles for good; what are you waiting for? Readers must resist the temptation to skip to the chapter about solutions you can live with. It may look like the dream of seeing yourself slender, fit, and energetic has become a nightmare. However, by reading the book chronologically at least once, readers will realize they can make this dream come true. Change starts in the brain; hardly a surprise when you think about it, but the brain has been programmed incorrectly by habit. Those habits must change, even if this happens slowly. Do you tell your doctor the whole truth? Probably not, but it's essential to be honest with yourself. I'm starting my list of changes right now, and so could you with a copy of The End of Try Try Again by Kristen Carter; a ten-star lifesaver.

Kristen Carter, MS, has written an amazing guide that opened my eyes to my potential. I've struggled with weight loss throughout my life and have tried almost every fad diet there is. I may have lost the weight, but I gained it back just as quickly. That's why Kristen's title
The End of Try Try Again really grabbed my attention. Not only does she focus on weight loss, but also on exercise - which goes hand in hand with losing weight and keeping it off. Her solution is simple but potentially life-changing, as altering your mindset and habits can greatly impact your health and quality of life. Kristen's advice is not limited to just weight loss and exercise; it can be applied to any part of your life that needs transformation. Kristen has truly developed an inspirational formula that will change your life for the better.

From the Author

The End of Try Try Again was written to reach out to the many people who have tried again and again to incorporate the healthy habits of regular exercise and eating nutritious foods that help to maintain weight. Throughout my 30 years as a trainer and lifestyle coach, I would have to say that most people that I have encountered struggle with this very issue. Research shows that there are millions of people who are in the same boat. My experience and the research show that many people choose a path toward a solution that does not work, but they try, try, again.

Our bodies and minds are complex, and so a solution that is really going to make a difference needs to take that into account. I wanted to address the nature of the complexity upfront in this book so that people are under no illusions about it. Once that was established, the way forward was to break the solution down into manageable bits, and offer guidance as to how to tackle each piece and in what order.

This is sort of a "myth-busting" approach, followed by presenting a different way to attack the problem that does not overwhelm or frustrate. As such, it really is about adjusting a mindset that may have been getting in the way.

I also did not want to make it long and involved. I have read many self-help books in this area. Many of them offer the same type of program that I do, but in a more drawn-out way. There is a lot of detail, which may be a good thing, but I wanted to get the message across more quickly so that people do not have to read 200-300 pages that may still leave them wondering HOW to proceed. I also wanted to relate the solution to each individual life, give them options, and guide them to make their own choices based on what fits for them. Research shows again and again that developing autonomy over a person's actions can create lasting changes. This does not happen when following a diet.

Finally, I really wrote this book to satisfy my soul. After working in the field and reading lots of books and research, I wanted to have my say! I know that there are lots of programs out there that actually lead people astray, as evidenced by how many people remain frustrated with their efforts. I feel that it is important to consider psychology, neurobiology, physiology, general behavior tendencies, and how our bodies work. These are all part of being human. We are much better off if we can start to understand what makes us tick. Once that happens, that understanding can help us work with those systems in order to reach our goals.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

All the best
Kristen

As someone who has struggled with her weight for years, I have read dozens of books detailing different strategies on weight loss. "The End of Try Try Again" specifically addresses how to successfully change habits which, for me, has been a huge problem. Since reading this book and implementing the strategies suggested, I have gradually and successfully cut sugar out of my life, have incorporated time-restricted-eating into my daily routine, and walk at least 4 times a week for 45 minutes. With just these strategies, I have lost 10 pounds so far (since I read the book in February). I highly recommend "The End of Try Try Again" for anyone who has struggled with creating healthy routines.

“Many people want to lose weight, and many have failed to do so, again and again.”

“Eating and exercise are both very complex behaviors that
involve culture, family, social experiences, emotions, and how our brains
respond to cues. These behaviors become part of our identities and how we
perceive what our abilities are. They are deeply ingrained and constantly rein forced through daily routines. Most of us can’t just decide to make sweeping
changes in these areas and succeed by willpower alone.
But changes in diet and exercise are worth making! Each person has their
own reasons for wanting to make some changes. Often we just want to feel
and look better. That’s great! No matter what your reasons are, there is a huge
win when it comes to your health. This book will show you exactly how losing
weight and exercising more can positively impact your health. It’s another
big reason to do this for yourself…”

“Eating and exercise are complex habits that don’t lend themselves
to easy answers. Still, it is possible to approach changes to eating and exercise
with strategies and tools that actually work.”

“Knowing how and why your brain fights changes like “diet and exercise” is
a good start toward understanding why change can be so hard. Just giving
yourself this new perspective is an excellent first step toward approaching
change in a whole new way. It is a new lens that can get you to your diet and
    exercise goals…”

“Someone said, “Learning unlocks the door to everything we want
in life.” When you think about it, it’s true! It’s been true ever since the day we
were born. Most of us spend a great deal of our youth in school, and many
of us continue on through our adult years. We learn how to keep a job, how
to find a place to live, how to navigate different phases of our lives.
Changing some eating and exercise habits is a new phase that involves learning…”

“It is estimated that between 40% and 80% of disease processes are caused by
not doing the right things for our health. That’s a lot! That’s why it’s important
to eat healthy foods and exercise more. But get this…you only need to lose
5%-10% of your body weight to get benefits for your health…”

“…chock full of ways to re-frame how you approach making
eating and exercise changes. It gives you a comprehensive view of what’s
involved, and gives you new ways of thinking about the process. Additionally,
and importantly, it gives you sample steps to follow to find a solution that
    fits you and your life…”

“…You have bypassed the dieting failure cycle and really
    achieved success…”

The End of Try, Try Again: Overcome Your Weight Loss and Exercise Struggles for Good by Kristen Carter offers a solution to yoyo dieting and exercise fads. Eating right. Exercising more. Sounds simple, right? But why then when it comes down to doing it, it just seems so overwhelming?
This book helps to explain that, and so much more- as Ms. Carter uses her 30 years in the industry to explain, simply, the whys and hows in a direct and easy to understand, and implement, way.
This is an insightful ‘how-to’ guide with a step-by-step process to help you better understand, and then guide you to take the steps needed to improve your health and well-being.

A lot of what this book offers is common sense ideas- but sometimes we can lose track of that when we are caught in the ‘cycle’ and struggling with our health. There are no gimmicks or fads here. Her strategy is simple, straight-forward, and helpful- without sounding, or feeling, like she is ‘preaching’.
These are achievable changes, within a manageable plan- with research-based information that has a ‘proven’ track record. Her book offers a way to end the dieting ‘cycle’ that so many of us have been stuck on while getting no real results. With her book, she gives us a way to make the whole process less overwhelming by learning and building new skills.
    An insightful and thought-provoking read…

Kristen's book is a roadmap to better health through small attainable goals. I especially liked her suggestions for exercise as I have limited mobility, but despite these limitations, she has outlined ways I can make a significant improvement in my overall health. Developing new habits means we have to know ourselves better; her questions help guide the reader to a better understanding of what holds them back and what will motivate lasting change. Very practical and helpful.

I’ve been hearing about the small change approach to diet and exercise for a while now, but could not see how it would work for me. I did not see how I could continue to be motivated over a long haul. After reading Kristen’s book, I totally understand WHY that is the way to go, and HOW to pull it off. I will be sharing this book with others!

This was a rather interesting take, and one that I can get behind, on how to approach weight loss and exercise struggles. For most of my life, I've had a struggle with weight and I viewed it from the standpoint that it was all just in the food I was eating. This author takes a look at, and encourages the reader to also take a look from the inside out. How does motivation influence our choices? There is also a focus on baby steps and not just jumping in with both feet and expecting to thrive. Overall, a good book with some pointers that I plan on implementing myself.

The End of Try Try Again has good advice if you are just starting your weight loss journey or have no clue where to start. It is highly detailed with why losing weight is a great idea for everyone. It is motivating by having you find your WHY. It does have good advice on how to take small steps at a time for sustainable weight loss. It details what can happen if you don't become healthy. For me this book did not hit what I was looking for due to my research and diligence on being healthy. I wish there was more details or a detailed plan that I would be able to implement.
