- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2010Have read this book a few times and always get something out of it that I missed the first time.A good book for the average person to read to get a glimpse of church history...very interesting comments made about Islam especially with the present climate regarding that faith....and eye opener to read that Islam was used to bring discipline on the church. I would recommend to anyone that would like to know how the church has been, from the beginning, on through the Crusades, the Reformation, the split in the church between the East and West up to the time of Spurgeon. Interesting also to know a little of the history of the Baptists, the reformers, the Methodists and also the persecution of the church down through the ages. All in all, a very informative and easy to read book on our faith.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2009I've found this book to be the best summary of church history I've ever used, not only because it is concise, but because it is written as story, and is therefore interesting. Excellent scholarship combined with a gift of the use of language, and church history becomes a living thing. The copious illustrations add immensely to the value of the book as well.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2013I have had this book for many years. This is one book that I use to look up different religious groups or certain people of the Reformation. It is interesting reading from start to finish, giving a time line of events of church history. I intent to give each of our children a book for Christmas. It's a great resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readers review "sketches from church history" banner of truth"
This book in a small compass takes the reader through the history of the reformation majoring mainly on the reformed tradition therefore Protestant " evangelical" and would be of interest to anyone wishing to increase their knowledge of
this branch of Christianity and some of the divergent emphasis and practises therein, being of a Calvinistic "Sovereign Grace, " propensity and nature it tends to the inclusion of the Old Covenant Legalistic attitudes to the Law as delivered to Moses as being still a useful adjunct to the Gospel a position many of us would not be in sympathy with, a not unnatural position for the publishers "banner of truth " as all their publications carry this reformed interpretation, as they are one of the mouthpieces of the "reformed tradition " but an informative book tracing this tradition but in a rather exclusive manner, somewhat selective in its content, shining it's light on favoured people in history embracing this understanding and stream of thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars struggled and fought for the reformed truth that we know and love. It is our very foundations
It is impossible to fully appreciate our Christian faith and all it means to us, without knowing the history of how much Christians in the past suffered, struggled and fought for the reformed truth that we know and love. It is our very foundations; discovering past ancestors is thrilling and exciting, but discovering the history of Christianity is enriching and has made me even more grateful for the truth I am privileged to know and understand. God has preserved His truth and the scriptures for us today.

Very clear and concise and heart warming account of the outworking of Jesus Christ's promise to build His Church despite ferocious opposition from outside as well inside the 'church'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but strong bias, significant accuracy issues and poor selection of illustrations
I may be a novice with respect to church history but am quite familiar with Islam yet the section covering this made some serious errors, such as claiming that Islam denies the virgin birth of Jesus. That makes me wonder for those areas I'm not so knowledgeable about.
That said, the book is interesting and rather than providing a comprehensive overview of history it provides people-drive biographies and stories of interest to drive the narrative.
The illustrations would be better in colour but aren't of much interest.
It is important to point out that the book is very blatantly biased towards reformed or Calvinist theology and strongly anti-catholic (at least at certain periods in history).
I did learn a lot, or I hope I did.
