- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017Fantastic book. I devoured it as soon as it arrived. It contains a broad overview of various Jewish beliefs on the nature of god throughout history, including contemporary examples. There's also a nifty chart at the back if you want a quick summary. A good starting point for further research.
Also, the cover looks really nice if you care about that kind of thing.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2023Most people get caught in juvenile theology because their Jewish education ends at Bar/Bat Mitzvah and all they know is the bible, or because they are raised with only rudimentary Christian theology that makes God into a man. This book demonstrates just what Theology 201 might suggest, at how complex Jewish views of God got over time and the blessing of thoughtful exploration of God. I particularly like the authentic humanist views of Erich Fromm and feminist views of several thinkers that are part of this very straightforward volume. It really does wonders for the mind...get it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021This book is really well laid out and an overall comfort in that knowing even the Rambam (along with MANY other great thinkers) wrestled with the question of who/what is Gd.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2018This was a great and balanced introduction to various Jewish (and not-so-Jewish) perspectives on G-d. A couple of the views relegated to the appendix deserved chapters of their own while a couple of the chapters covered perspectives that were not about G-d at all and did not really belong in a book on theology.
When talking about theological perspectives, it is much easier to oversimplify then it is to make those perspectives accessible. This book strikes a near perfect balance of accessible while still preserving some of the key nuances.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2013This is not a book telling you WHAT to believe about God, it is an informative information book on how Jews perceived God, the nature of, the intent, and what God represents. From absolute theism to naturalistic pantheism, from personal God to metaphorical idea of redemptive force. It helps one understand why there are differences between Jews of Orthodox perspective all the way to Humanistic persuasion.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2018This book is amazing- and very well written. I like the perspective of the religion as it changes over time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018I am converting to Judaism and this was on my curriculum list from my rabbi, it’s fantastic and answered a lot of my questions!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2014An excellent review of some of Judaism's finest minds on the subject of who God is, what God wants, and how we can best serve God. As a future convert, I recommend it wholeheartedly.
