10 WAYS TO BE AN EXCEPTIONAL PARENT IN A QUICK-FIX WORLD
No matter how good their intentions, all parents at times resort to quick-fix parenting: things we do to stop a kid's negative or annoying behavior.Quick-fix parenting may temporarily ease a parent's stress level, but it does little to positively impact a child's future. Quick-fix parenting is a terrible long-term strategy for parenting.
Intentional parenting is the opposite of quick-fix parenting. Intentional parenting is a way to raise children to become healthy, independent young adults. It's based on solid principles which, applied over time, actually result in less-stressed parents and happier, better-adjusted, and more successful kids. Intentional parenting means you've got more than good intentions; you've got a plan. (And it's always better to have a plan for dealing with the stuff that inevitably crops up between parents and their kids than it is to wing it.)
In Intentional Parenting: 10 Ways to be an Exceptional Parent in a Quick-Fix World, Doug and Cathy Fields draw on their own extended experience with young people and as parents to guide you through 10 specific actions that will help you become a more effective parent.
A great resource for individuals, couples, and small groups, this interactive workbook comes with a free code to stream 10 video sessions, plus a small group discussion guide.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2019Great book with content that is easily applicable and sticks with you throughout the day. I’ve noticed a lot less arguing as I’ve changed some small ways in how I communicate to my sons.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020This book (and the free youtube video series) really opened my eyes to being a better parent. Filling out the work-sheets will bring special perspective in a few years when I flip through the pages again. I am pleased with the Christian approach to this idea of being a Intentional Parent. This is my best Amazon purchase yet!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020This is an amazing book and study that has honestly changed the way I think about myself and the way I parent every single day. I truly, truly feel that it has made me a better parent. I am so thankful that my small group was doing this study during the pandemic; what a perfect time to work on being intentional. Some of the things the author says are a bit outdated or unfounded and based solely on opinion, but I suppose that’s the case with any parenting book. For example, no, I do not believe that a daughter doesn’t receive enough affection from her father is going to end up being sexually promiscuous. LOL. And the videos are a tad cheesy. All of this can honestly be overlooked though, even from this liberal feminist (wink), because the foundation of everything the author says is sound. I wish I had read this sooner. I’d encourage EVERY parent to read it. I generally hate self help / how to books, but this one is worth it. Promise.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2019My husband and I lead a group at our church for parents of teenagers. We love this study! The videos are fun and relatable and the content is relevant.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2019Using with a small group and we are really enjoying following the videos (link provided in book) and doing the workbooks between meetings. Great ideas to learn to be more intentional and proactive rather than reactive
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024It was ok. Did a class at church. Agreed with almost all of it. Didn’t learn much new. Very standard.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021Great book!
