- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2015...They took the ashes and gave them to children to drink with water. They threw the body on the fire, burnt it and buried the ashes of the body. Then the deaths ceased." Great book for learning numerous things about not only vampires but every other related creature (including the Chupacabra). Picked up a lot of interesting tidbits, as an example, in Arab and Persian traditions it was believed vampires sucked blood through a victim's toes, some thought you were predisposed to become a vampire if you were the seventh born (might Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart have been a vampire?) and also included mention of the direct descendents of Judas Iscariot who supposedly lurked in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania that when attacking someone they were thought to leave a scar with the roman numeral for 30 (XXX) referring to the 30 pieces of silver Judas received for betraying Jesus. Fun way to learn things like what beasts to take with you to find a vampire grave, the second favorite way to kill a vampire, and what Lady Bathory and Rudy Eugene shared in common. Hard to believe that there are still stories about vampires making it into the news most recently like the BBC report of 12/23/2002 titled "Vampires Strike Malawi Villages", and the AP story of 12/1/2012 "Serbian villagers claim legendary vampire is haunting their town". Don't know how others feel but I found this book rather fascinating!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020I fully acknowledge that it's partially on me for ordering this without looking up the number of pages, but this is not a book. It's a pamphlet. 40 pages long. Something about the short length should have been included in the description. I haven't read it yet, if the content is especially good I may consider bumping up to four stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2014Lots of examples which highlights contradictions, laying the vampire myth to rest, so to speak, at least for those willing to let it be. For the rest, garlic seems a go out d choice of deodorant.......
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2014very interesting story to read, but very dark in my confined quarters. I must wait unti the sun goes down to read more. Ha ha ha ha!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2017This was a quick read on vampires. Although it is short. There is some interesting information to be found. Most of it I knew about already, but that is to be excepted with a book of this sort. There was a nice touch on the chupacabra and UFOs, but to me the chupacabra ain't no vampire just a boat sucking fiend. This book does touch on the vampire in pop culture so if you want more on the pop culture such as movies then this book doesn't do it. There are two brief sketches on the real Dracula and Elizabeth Bathory, models for later fictional vampires. Want to spend an maybe an hour on vampires then this will do just don't plan on sinking your teeth in too deep.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2018Some interesting folklore and explanations as to why the myth of the vampire exists. Reads more like a school paper or bad dissertation at times than anything else. Still had some facts and stories of interest, would have liked it more had it been longer and the author used primary resources.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun and informative quick read
A pretty interesting summary of various vampire myths and legends, as well as modern cultural depictions and suggestions on why the myths developed. All I'm all a fun and informative - and quick! - read.
