4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 96 ratings

Picking up a hitchhiker can be a risky business. It can also be just a kind stranger that needs help, but if you're unlucky, it can be just someone like James Waybern Hall, the Hitchhiker from Hell. Learn more about the life of this serial killer and his heinous crimes!

Download FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

James Waybern Hall isn’t quite as well known as some other mass murderers, but his crimes are just as heinous. Waybern picked most of his victims at random out on the open road. His method was simple: he would smile, raise a thumb into the air, and see if he could catch a ride. Before too long, this amiable hitchhiker led a trail of death and destruction in his wake. Although it is unclear just how many people he killed, it was on charges of murdering his second wife Fayrene Hall, that this killer would finally be brought to justice. In this book, we will closely chronicle all of the dastardly doings of this little-known serial killer.

Jack Smith is fascinated with true crime, specifically serial killers. After finishing his university degree in medicine, Jack continued to become a pathologist. He has traveled far and wide and has seen many cases in the thirty years. Jack started documenting some of the peculiarities in these cases to observe trends among crimes. From this early fascination with murderers, he decided to pursue this by writing about cases that he found most interesting both from a psychological point of view as well as the story behind the murders. He is from Maine and has since retired, allowing him to focus on his true crime research, which he documents in his books.

I had not heard of this serial killer from Arkansas as it was before my time. However, it's surprising that he hasn't appeared in other true crime books.

Although some few theories are introduced to explain Hall's murderous tendencies, from an abusive childhood to a head injury, it appears that he failed to bond with anyone in infancy and never developed feelings for anyone throughout his life.

It is unknown how many he killed, and he claimed to not know himself. He was tried for a single murder and convicted on testimony and tangible evidence, so additional trials were not necessary.

I was very interested in reading about a previously unheard of by me, serial killer from the state of Arkansas. I was surprised how mundane the telling of this True Crime Story was. I finished reading it because I wanted to learn the facts of the case not because I found it to be compelling reading.
