The one negative is the app doesn't seem to have notifications. I have found how I can get an e-mail, but not an alert on my phone. I get too many junk e-mails to have email alerts. The software has a text option, but no good instruction on how to add a phone number. I guess another negative is $3 per month for the service, but I actually don't mind that for a number to call and a connection that works.
My husband said the hardware setup was super easy. I can confirm it was easy to take off the screws to get at the serial number - needed during device registration. Batteries are very difficult to remove though, and this did not make the wifi appear again.
As others have noted...the continued setup with wifi is not easy. The documentation and interface for mobile access on the website are both horrible. I'm amazed someone signed off on this being ready to be sold. It really is that bad, and poorly written.
I recommend that you use a computer and not your phone, otherwise the screens are incredibly difficult, almost impossible, to enter the necessary info for registration.
It really is disappointing how bad the mobile version is.
I bought this due to the ability to launch the app from within the Ring doorbell app. It does save a step, but not much. The lockstate "app" is just a link to the very poorly designed web app.
There is no support on the weekend.
The instructions mention entering a # key, which this lock does not have.
Now I have tried to unlock the deadbolt from the app. The icon shows an off position with an unlocked icon, and an on position as locked. I've toggled this and nothing happened. I tried to make this work for a good 30 minutes, and could not see in their online videos any explanation of this icon. I really want the ability to lock and unlock from my phone. I still dont know why nothing happened when I hit the icon. UNTIL...
My phone battery died. I plugged it in, and in a half hour or so, when I turned it on again, after a few seconds, the door unlocked. LUCKILY, I witnessed this happen and manually locked it.
Now I have very little confidence in the safety and security of this lock. I dont want the door to randonly unlock.
I've toggled that button, it is showing as unlocked, and in the last hour, the door has remained locked.
Is WiFi required?
No. If you only want the lock to perform like a KwikSet simple electronic lock for example, you don't need to use wifi. The Lock State RemoteLock 5i works just like a KwikSet electronic lock without wifi. You can enter a master code that can be used to set temp codes and to change a few settings. All of this is described in the Lock State user manual on page 44. You can set things like local codes, master code, delete / add stuff, mute beeps, auto-lock...all the simple stuff you'd expect.
When is WiFi needed?
Here are the use cases I identified where wifi is needed. There may be more. These were the ones I cared about.
- You want to access the lock from your phone using the RemoteLock app to perform an action
- You want to connect the lock to AirBnB
Do I need a monthly plan with RemoteLock?
- If you only care about using the lock for the basic operations where wifi isn't needed, no. You don't need to create a RemoteLock account nor do anything with their website. Just install the lock and program it like you would a normal KwikSet electronic lock that doesn't connect to wifi. I verified this for a week while I used the lock as just a plain basic electronic lock. My local user code allowed me to lock and unlock the lock when I used the keypad on the lock.
- If you care about the use cases where wifi is needed, yes you need a monthly plan with RemoteLock. The plans are listed here.

--- The BASIC plan, at the time of this review, lets you use the Remote Lock app to perform basic functions. I **believe** one of these functions is to be able to lock and unlock the door from your phone using the RemoteLock app. You'll need to verify this. It costs $3 per lock per month (at the time of this review).
--- The PREMIUM plan is the one that lets you interface with the AirBnB system. It costs $6 per lock per month (at the time of this review).
How do I connect the lock to AirBnB
Their user guides and videos on YT are solid. Here is the basic process.
- Install the lock in the door. Set the master code and local codes so that the lock at least works from the keypad.
- Create a RemotLock account. Select a plan first! I spoke with their support team. It's important to have a plan selected first.
- Get the app, log in to the app with your account creds
- Follow the instructions to connect the lock to wifi
- Finally, log in to your RemoteLock account in a browser on your computer and go to the Integrations section to select the option to connect to AirBnB. Follow the work flow.
Is this lock worth it?
It costs more than other locks that offer AirBnB access but this one works flawlessly with AirBnB and other hospitality systems. So if this sort of feature matters to you, this is the good lock.
If you are only looking for a simple electronic non-wifi lock to use with local codes etc, no. Get the KwikSet electronic non-wifi model for under $100. Aside - the RemoteLock feels and looks just like a KwikSet lock which makes me feel like it's a quality device. I use KwikSet electronic locks for basic local code access. I use RemoteLock lock when I need AirBnB / hospitality-system workflows.
Overall, I'm happy with my LockState RemoteLock 5i.
