Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-3-This picture book includes the harvest celebrations of 11 countries from around the world. Each page contains four rhyming sentences that introduce a festival to readers. The name of the festival is given in the language of the culture, and then a pronunciation is provided. A window in the bottom corner of each spread provides a detail or fact. The simple style of the illustrations gives cultural uniqueness to each group, while still achieving a unified effect: what the people are wearing, eating, making, and doing is showcased in each selection. Back matter contains a calendar of all the festivals featured, information about harvest season presented in a Q&A format, questions for readers, and more detail about each event. Library shelves are full of books on this topic; this one is different because it discusses celebrations in countries that are not typically represented, such as Iran and Liberia, and the illustrations provide accurate details that will engage young readers and facilitate interesting discussion. VERDICT The combination of harvest celebrations that occur in different countries at different times of the year makes this book distinctive and worth purchasing.-Peggy Henderson Murphyα(c) Copyright 2011. The item arrived on time, has lots of different ways to explain Thanksgiving and beautiful illustrations.

All their books are amazing. A perfect item to teach young kids about what else happens around the world in the fall

The book is a great concept. However, they attribute the Jewish holiday of Sukkot to…Morocco?? Sukkot literally celebrates the harvest season of Israel, where Jews originate from. Not to mention that Jews have been ethnically cleansed from Morocco for decades.

This is such an egregious error and so easy to get right. I cannot trust the rest of the information in the book.

I love this colorful book that explores 12 different harvest festivals celebrated around the world (Liberia, South Korea, and Iran, to name a few). These festivals all give thanks for the food that sustains them and for the hands and animals responsible for growing the food.

The illustrations are magnificent! They are sure to make everyone smile. Be sure to take your time looking at each colorful spread. They reflect the foods and clothes of each culture.

The last several pages provide further information on the festivals and a timeline showing when they are observed. This is the opportunity to point out that other cultures have their version of our Thanksgiving holiday.

I received an early digital copy from the publisher. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

This book does simplify harvest festivals for kids. Sometimes a bit too much. but it's good for prek/kindergarten kids to learn a bit more about other cultures

Information lacking, some don't even seem to be about harvest at all.
