"Retail Pride: The Guide to Celebrating Your Accidental Career" by Ron Thurston is not just a pat on the back for retail workers; it's a raw, unfiltered dive into the highs and lows of an industry that's often unfairly dismissed as merely a 'job' rather than a viable career path. Thurston tears down these misconceptions with a fierce passion, shining a spotlight on the grit, resilience, and sheer tenacity required to excel in retail.

This book resonates with me on a personal level. It validates my journey and the rollercoaster of experiences that come with a career in retail. Thurston doesn't shy away from the challenges—we're talking about the tough days, the demanding customers, the late hours, and the holiday rushes that can test your limits. But here's the kicker: he turns these experiences into badges of honor, celebrating the skills and lessons learned in the trenches of retail warfare.

"Retail Pride" is a wake-up call to anyone who's ever felt undervalued in their retail role. Thurston's voice is a blend of mentor, cheerleader, and seasoned warrior, offering not just hope but practical strategies for turning a retail job into a rewarding career. He champions the idea that pride in retail is not just about surviving but thriving, leveraging every challenge as an opportunity to grow stronger and more skilled.

The book's edginess comes from its honesty. It doesn't sugarcoat the retail experience but instead acknowledges the blood, sweat, and tears that go into it. And yet, it's overwhelmingly positive, pushing the narrative that amidst the chaos and unpredictability of retail, there lies incredible potential for personal and professional growth.

In essence, "Retail Pride" is a battle cry for the unsung heroes of the retail world. It's an affirmation that yes, this is a career worth pursuing, full of ups, downs, and everything in between. Ron Thurston has crafted not just a book but a manifesto for anyone daring enough to find their pride on the retail floor.

Retail Pride is a commonsense guide on real-life career experience to create your solutions through education, determination, and passion. The best part, you do not have to be in retail to benefit from reading Retail Pride. If you work with teams and focus on customer experience, this is the book for you. I am a nurse in a leadership position and found concepts, like the three pillars, easily transferrable. However, I think the powerful message of making a “human connection” prevalent in any industry.

Although I have never been in retail nor fashion, I am a consumer. I found Ron’s anecdotes of connecting with staff and customers, particularly thought-provoking. As a consumer, I have never been able to respond to the question asked by a sales associate, “are you finding everything okay.” Ron explains connecting with the consumer by inviting questions like “tell me about your closet” offers an opportunity to exchange vital information and initiate a relationship. If a sales associate ever asked me that question and followed up with “what part of your closet are you shopping for today?” Honestly, it would make me a devoted fan of the sales associate and brand.

It makes me think about interacting with patients. In nursing school, we are taught to use therapeutic communication techniques like open-ended questions and paraphrasing, but using empathy, as Ron suggested, will help determine what communication style fits best for each individual.

Retail Pride is more than an exploration of one’s career; it is a guide of practical experience and ends with the retail community taking pride in the work they do every day. From personal experience, I have had moments with sales associates that have made my day. I walk in your store, tired and confused, and leave a little lighter because of you.
Thank you, Ron Thurston and the retail community!

Ron has delivered something worth taking note of by all who have been enamored with the business of retail commerce as well as those who have only stepped in a store as a client. This book is an easy and fast read that serves as a much-needed reminder in these uncertain times for the retail industry. Retail Pride served a purpose prior to Covid 19 and has been elevated with an important message because of the current industry challenges.
I began reading this book last evening and stayed with it to the last page because it resonated on several levels. The positivity message balanced with realism is refreshing. Bring your highlighter as you dive into the pages. I view it as a current business sector situation guide as well as a refreshing reminder for those of us who have loved the pace, energy, rewards, and yes, challenges regardless of one's role within your company. You will feel reinvigorated and also be reminded of the "why" and "how" to move forward in the changing retail landscape. It offers actionable advice for steps in order to continue to stay current, relevant, and growing along with the changing business model. The book flows due to how well it has been formatted by Ron. It is a celebration of the world of retail! Valuable lessons are shared within the brightly colored spine of the book!

Not your typical book on retail filled with metrics, conversion rates, traffic counts and every other measureable. If you are in retail it will give you the determination to keep your passion alive for one of the most rewarding careers in your life. If you are thinking about getting into retail or are just in it now as a stepping stone for something greater it will convince you that you need to stay the course because you can be on a path to greatness.Retail is about people, the relationships that you build over time, the friendships that are made, the connections you foster with your coworkers and customers. It is also a career that will afford you the opportunity to live a very comfortable life style. Retail is not for everyone.... You need to work hard, play hard and have a passion to do your best everyday. It's not easy but it is one of the most rewarding careers out there. Ron certainly nailed it with the title ....RETAIL PRIDE!!!!

Excellent. I don’t work directly in retail but Retail Pride has many relatable chapters to other walks of life and industries. It draws on Ron’s past experiences and observations which makes it very relatable and easy to read, broken down into key sections with quotes from retail leaders throughout.
