Con to these brush pens are they are harder to control than a standard brush. the amount of water can be hard to control at first but with practice it can be controlled. It will never be as controlled as a standard brush. So these are not good for detail work.
Pro to the control issue it makes it more interesting to have less control. Can give you a new look or style to your work, and it’s always fun for me to try something different.
I would go for them if you wanna try something new and if you like water color pencils or painting on the go. Also an easy fun way to paint with little ones
My granddaughter has really been into crafts since she has been young, she is now 11 going on 12 and getting away from just doing crafts for the sake of doing them. I thought maybe it was time to introduce her to one hobby/craft at a time to see if see has an interest in it. I bought good paint, a video tutorial and all of the recommended supplies that were in the instructional book I also got her to give her the best possible chance at success for watercolor painting. If it is not for her, we will move onto something else but at least she will know!
PROS:
• Brush tip spreads water evenly & easily
• Water doesn't flow out too fast
• No need for frequent refills/stays full long time
• Quickly cleans colors off tip w/ a few squeezes
• VERY convenient for travel/outdoor painting!
• Best used with Water Color Pencils
CONS:
• Brush tips could be more precise but still good
• Caps fall off easily when placed on back of pen
• Harder to control with Water Color Pan Paints - (I prefer a regular paintbrush for that)
• Could use a bigger variety of tips (thinner/finer to styles listed above). A greater variety of tips would be very conducive to creativity & convenience of transport.
All in all, a good buy for your money - # of brushes for the price. I'd recommend. :)
One Year After Purchase
TLDR:
-Light usage in a year’s time shows no wear on the bristles: they still are as wonderful as original review states.
-The head can snap off if not kept in a safe place during daily transport.
-The leakage notes in original review has become a deterrent to enjoying these as travel brushes.
I didn’t use my brushes for a while as I don’t get to sit and paint often: I usually have to carry a kit with me to grab a few moments during breaks.
My fave travel one mentioned below broke. I switched from a hard case to a soft pouch for my travel kit: bad idea for me.
When I tried to use the other brushes again last month, they had a definite and noticeable leak that smudged up the details on my work- impossible to be precise. I still love the feel of the bristles and the way they keep their shape. My short term solution is to empty the barrels and use them as regular brushes. This has worked fine so far as I still prefer them to the old brushes I had. In the meantime I am in search of a replacement travel brush!
ORIGINAL REVIEW: 1/22/2021
Purchased 9/2020
I absolutely love my Ohuhu water brushes! They’ve replaced my old regular paint brushes.
The largest round brush is my go to for my small travel kit. (I don’t carry a rinsing cup.) I can paint a background wash with it or paint tiny detail lines on a leaf. It holds nearly plenty water (unless I am doing a rainbow wet on wet background wash!)
PROS
These maintain their shape and feel smooth and wonderful on the paper.
They hold water well. Both the brush and the water holder. With the caps on I don’t worry a bit about water spilling out.
CONS
That said, some pens do show where the water leaks a bit into the bristles as I know I leave it fairly dry but come back to it with a slight drip. However, (as a beginner watercolorist) I don’t notice this as I paint. Maybe it is a very slow leak?

Takes a little to get used to how much pressure to bring out a little bit of water vs a lot but it was quick to learn. They have not leaked at all.
