This trap is very easy to set up and safer than old style snap traps. The bait cup is easy to fill, simply unscrew from bottom, load with bait and screw back on. I also sprinkled some bait (seeds or pieces of bacon) UNDER the trigger and spread a bit of peanut butter or Nutella on the back part of the trigger. This will make the rat go deeper into the trap. Little trick I learned from other reviews is to hold the trap open manually and push down on the trigger a bit. Gently push down in the trigger until it moves down a bit but before it snaps. Make sure u are holding it open so it doesn’t get you as it will definitely hurt. This will make the trigger extra sensitive and it will take very little pressure to go off.
I had several traps set, finally after almost two weeks of skirting this trap and ignoring it, the smartest rat was caught. For almost two weeks I’d watch this rat on my camera ignore the traps. This thing was smart. I guess he just grew comfortable seeing it around and perhaps hungry enough and came to it. I had different types of baits on the different traps (bacon, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, etc) The trap that finally caught it was baited with a small marshmallow I soaked in vanilla extract with bacon bits sprinkled under the trigger. Also, on the back of the trigger, towards the center, I smeared a bit of Nutella.

Update: I have caught 6 rats in 3 weeks. I have no more rat activity at the usual locations for over 10 days now so I think I got them all. These traps work great.

I killed off a rat infestation using 4 of them and baiting them with honey peanut butter. They are really easy to set, bait, and dispose of the rats from. I set them with the open jaws facing the wall and it worked well. Most effective way to get rats, but you need to use some tricks

I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun to trap rats around our property. My wife has a dozen bird feeders and we go through about 50 lbs of sunflower seeds, peanuts, and other kinds of bird feed every month. A lot of that ends up on the ground and it is an irresistible attractant for mice and rats. We also have a couple of wood piles and a thick stand of bamboo that seem to be ideal habitat for them. Long story short, we have a constant and ongoing battle with rats.

I've tried glue traps, electronic zappers, poison bait, etc. They ALL have negatives, but these tomcat traps are the most reliable, most effective, and the easiest to overcome the negative aspects of any other option.

Because we have so many birds in the yard, I have to be VERY careful that I don't inadvertently kill them in a trap. We also have a lot of night time visitors OTHER than rats (possums, skunks, raccoons, voles, etc). This makes glue traps a no-go for outside.

With poisons, you have two major issues to deal with - (1) you can't control where the rats die and (2) the dead rats can poison other beneficial animals (and pets!). So poisons are pretty much also a no-go other than in extreme circumstances where I need to quickly knock down a sudden population explosion and I can stay on top of things very carefully.

With these "snap traps" there are a couple of tricks that make them MUCH more effective and more useful. First, you MUST fasten them down somehow - I don't recommend a tether - affixing them to a stable surface is more effective. If I'm setting them up on the ground (like near a wood pile) I will screw them to a long 2 x 4 and then bury the 2x4 so that the trap(s) are flush to the ground. Second, you need to "pre-load" the traps by pushing down the trigger paddle until it is at the point JUST before it goes off. This takes some practice, but it makes the traps MUCH more effective since a much lighter touch will cause them to go off. I've studied the way the rats approach these traps using a game camera (motion activated with night vision) and they are extremely adept at removing bait without triggering the traps unless you take this step to pre-load the trigger. The downside of this approach is that rats that would otherwise get away will get trapped.

This means that about 30% of the time a rat will get caught by a leg or will not be killed because it doesn't' have to be standing inside the trap for it to fire. In these situations, it is very helpful if you (or someone else in the house) is able to quickly and humanely dispatch the rat so that it does not continue to suffer. (Not to be macabre, but I usually use a piece of 1.5" dowel as a club or use gardening shears as a guillotine depending on the situation.)

Bottom line for the money, these traps are extremely effective, durable (unlike expensive zappers), reliable, inexpensive, and rain-proof!

These rat traps are really easy to use. I tried another brands and although they worked, the design wasn't the best at the hinged sections. After few snaps, the hinges broke. With the Tom Cat brand, that is not an issue. These traps are built well and designed to last. Unlike the wooden traps, these are much safer to set and release. Just add your bait and press the jaws open until it clicks, and your set. These traps are easy to use and an effective humane way to rid your home from larger rodents. Well worth the purchase.

En cuanto a cuestiones de seguridad, pues prever que los gatos tuyos o del vecino o cualquier otra mascota no tengan acceso a estas trampas. Se sobre entiende extremar precauciones cuando hay menores de edad. Y en cuanto a uno como manipulador de esta trampa TOMCAT, manejar cuidadosamente la trampa al sebarla por que es muy dolorosa y hasta LESIONANTE la mordida de estas trampas.
RESUMEN: trampas de muy buena calidad de material y de un diseño evolutivo ingenioso, para ciertos casos de infestación por roedores.
