Purchase options and add-ons
Stranded on a small planetary system, gazing at the stars is the only thing that brings Jake any joy. When he was a child, he dreamed of exploring those stars by becoming a warp spaceship pilot just like his father. But when delusions started invading his thoughts, his aspirations for the future evaporated.
Even through his heavily medicated haze, Jake starts seeing Lola again. Instead of heeding his doctor's advice, he stops taking his medication altogether. Following Lola through the planetary system, Jake discovers just how dangerous his delusions have become. She lures him to a small, icy planet that has a dark secret.
Not everything can be seen, and not everything seen can be trusted.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2018What an wonderful piece of science fiction this is! The story of Jake, a likable young man who is branded as mentally unstable and drugged into a hazy, slow-motion version of "normality" because he can hear and see someone that no one else can, kept me turning pages to the very end. Martin did an incredible job of making Jake someone that I liked and wanted to succeed, while leaving me in doubt until the very end whether he was actually sane or not. In addition, I loved the "retro" feel of this book. As someone who grew up reading everything Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov ever wrote I felt as if "Mental Contact" was a sort of tribute to that golden era of science fiction -- especially in the way that Martin digs into the science behind her story. Entertaining, engaging, and very informative: everything you could ever want in a science fiction novel!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2018This is one of the most appealing stories I've read set in outer space in a future with no aliens whatsoever. The main character is deep, interesting, and you just want to know where he'll end up after every chapter. This book is highly recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2018Indie author Beth Martin opens up the worlds of Trappist-1 with 'Mental Contact.' Our protagonist Jake is the narrator of the story. It seems like Jake has some mental issues, he sees Lola a girl no one else can see. He is on a drug that keeps him from seeing these visions, but has annoying side-effects, so he can be a productive member of society, though not in the career he has dreamed of since childhood.
I enjoyed reading this e-book. The story progressed quickly and I found I was rooting for Jake, hoping events would work toward his benefit. As the story goes on you can feel his frustration at how his life is going. I really liked how this story ended. I hope Beth Martin will continue writing in this world she has created.
