Innovating Innovation!: Why Corporate Innovation Struggles in the Age of the Entrepreneur Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Why do large corporations struggle with innovation, yet startups seem to excel at it?

In Innovating Innovation! Why Corporate Innovation Struggles in the Age of the Entrepreneur, serial entrepreneur-turned-corporate innovation expert Mike Stemple reveals that the greatest threat large corporations face is their inability to innovate. The majority of contemporary innovation is created by startups, while large corporations lag behind. Stemple guides corporate executives toward true innovation, from understanding contemporary innovation to recognizing the difference between the corporate “operator” versus entrepreneurial “innovator” and being able to effectively implement a modern innovation program within an organization.

Innovating Innovation! answers the trillion-dollar question, “What can large companies do to innovate as easily as their disruptive startup competitors?” Corporate executives will learn how they can catch up and unlock the same quick-to-market innovations startups use to rapidly disrupt whole industries.

I'm retired now, and Mike's book brought back some "trauma" from my three-plus decades in corporate America. He correctly points out that companies; that is, long-standing companies, aren't good at innovation because they stop acting like startups. In my experience, companies behave like governments. They start out with a few simple goals in mind; react quickly and efficiently to solve whatever or problems or goals are in front of them and, over time, in the interest of efficiency and reliability, grow processes, which grow people, which grow more operations, and more processes, until, inevitably, any desirable innovation must now break through a barrier of inertia-causing red tape. Regardless of what a company's executive team wants - or thinks is going on - an army of people have grown up underneath and these people focus over time more on "here's why you can't do that" rather than "here's how we can make that happen." Changing the culture in these established institutions is incredibly difficult, but Mike lays out a path to do so, for those who are committed.
