4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 577 ratings

Where do you go when life as you know it literally implodes, when everything you believed to be true is nothing more than an ugly lie?

Skylar Perillo has been living a perfectly ordinary life in an ordinary small town, but nothing is as it seems. No, her life isn’t ordinary, and it’s a far cry from perfect.

Leaving the one place she’s ever called home is the only way forward, but it’s like her mother used to say: The grass isn’t always greener.

When a job as a nanny literally comes to find Skylar, she has no choice but to take it, even if it means working for the seriously uptight grump who’s already gotten under her skin.

But those old pearls of wisdom do ring true, because when it comes to Leo Hale, Skylar’s going to learn that you can’t judge a book by its cover, and that it really is darkest before the dawn.

YOUR HAND IN MINE (Blackbird Book 2) by Lily Foster is part of a series, but all the books can be read as standalone. I didn't read them in order, but when there are characters from other books showing up, it might be wise to read them in 1 to 4 orders. But I enjoyed them all even reading them out of order.

Skylar Perillo and her identical twin sister just lost their parents in a car accident. It was not all the bad news. Their father gambled away all their savings, plus lost their family home. He didn't stop there, but left tax liens, credit card debt, and bills for utilities. But the biggest and most hurtful act was their own father swindled out money from both girl's accounts. Skylar had another problem when she discovered that Tyler, her high school sweetheart and love of her life, was also gambling away his money. So, Skylar decided to leave the small town where she always had lived, and finish college to get her teaching degree.

Skylar was homesick, but now resided in Pennsylvania. She somehow found a job as a nanny, when she saved a lost little four-year-old girl named Libby Hale. She won Skylar's heart right away. Her single daddy Leo wasn't hard to look at either. They're both attracted instantly, but Leo doesn't want to lose his Mary Poppins like nanny and Skylar doesn't want to lose this job either. It is a slow-burn romance.

So I initially read this after it was recommended on an age gap booktube vid.
The description also makes it sound like an age gap, so it was full steam ahead for me.
Unfortunately, the actual gap is only about 8 years.
Granted, the characters are certainly in different life stages (stable working parent vs college student), but I definitely didn't get the forbidden feel I would expect from an age gap.
It is, however, a single father romance.
I enjoyed the story, overall, though a few elements were left untied or I found myself wondering why they were even present in the story at all.

Potential spoilers:

For instance, couldn't Skyler just have come off the tragic death of her parents (which, by the way, was very unclear. I didn't realize until much later in the book that both of her parents had been killed in the crash, it read like just the father had been killed). Why was the gambling aspect necessary? It doesn't really affect Skyler later in the book, she mentions it briefly to Leo and he's sympathetic, but it doesn't add anything to the plot.
Also, things felt left open with Tyler. I felt bad for the guy, he was getting help and Sky just let him walk out. Weird.

On the other spectrum, I loved how good and honorable Leo was. He's a great dad and I loved his relationship with Olivia.
Skyler is a strong and mature character and I enjoyed her steadfastness.
I wish we'd gotten a real love scene between our two characters, because there was lots of build up but no culmination.

I rarely give a 5 star review. I have to with this book. This was just a sweet love story that pulls on your heart strings and makes you root for the home team. There were a few typos and I had to reread a few paragraphs for context and clues, but nothing that was so awful that it loses a star. I really liked how time pushed forward and we are 3 months down the road instead of everything happening in a week. I will look for more Lilly Foster

This was a free read that I recently picked up. It was solid and entertaining, but at times was a bit confusing.
Primarily told in the present time dual POV, we see Leo and Sky navigate getting to know one another and creating a foundation for friendship.
My issue is that there were a couple of flashbacks and pieces that I think were left on the editing room floor that would have made the story more robust.
It was worth the price but did not whet my appetite for more from this author

Skylar perfect small-town life is forever ruined. Her parents died in a car accident and she and her twin discover the massive debt they both have in their name. At the same time, she gets accepted to a university. She has to leave the only home she knew. It's very hard a first, but as she gets used to it slowly gets easier. She joins the dance club and gets a job as a nanny. Her employer is a massive grump. But there is a lot more to him than what meets the eye.

Leo is overwhelmed and in serious need of a nanny. He has a hard time letting go especially since he was on his own from the start. Skylar is very good at what she does and she a good influence on his daughter.

There is mad chemistry between them, but it takes a long time for them to take that step.

It's heartfelt, steamy and full of all kinds of feels. The romance is a slow burn, it's at the very end of the book that it really happens. I wish that it happened sooner, or that the book was a bit longer, it ends when it just gets good! :)

After losing her parents, Skylar splits up with her boyfriend and moves to continue her education. If she hasn’t been through enough, she finds out her dad has been committing fraud in her name.

She gets a job looking after a little girl but doesn’t count on falling for her dad as well. Can they find love to heal both their hearts?

Got heated then you waited and waited and waited and then all chemistry was lost and you blinked and missed it at the end. It happened and HAE. He wasn’t that much older. 7!years doesn’t count when you are over 20 and under 30. Liked the characters and story but meh ultimately disappointing.
