Needed the upgraded thermostat so that we could enjoy humidification. We had a heat pump installed in 2009, and ever since I've been electrocuted if I touch the cat, move on the couch, or touch the granite counter top! It didn't matter. God help you if I touched you! Also, some of the furniture joints were shrinking (bed frames were quite obvious).
Just two weeks into the new atmosphere I haven't been shocked one time.
I did install a clear 1/2" drain line (based on other reviews) on the output so that I could observe the excess flow of water from the unit. This was a fantastic idea. The electric valve is off/on only. It does not adjust water flow based on your humidification setting, so being able to manually minimize waste is essential. To effect manual control then I obviously installed a throttle valve between the water input and the humidifer.
Observations: The instructions are quite clear that the unit should be installed on the supply side, not the return side. Also, there are vents on the outside of the unit which are visible in the marketing photos. These vents ONLY provide air flow for the humidifier's motor -- the internal part of the unit where water is passing by is sealed off and no conditioned air is escaping out the visible vents.
Also installed:
- the wireless module to support the wireless connectivity of the thermostat with the furnace control Honeywell YTHM5421R1002 Prestige IAQ 2.0 EIM Module Kit
- the Redlink Internet interface to support access via smartphone (which provides access to basic system controls) and/or the Honeywell website (you have to create an account and then input the code you input from the bottom of the Redlink) -- you can then have FULL control of the heating/cooling settings and scheduling from anywhere! Honeywell THM6000R1002 Red Link Enabled Internet Gateway
For my part, setup of the thermostat and the Redlink was a breeze.
This Honeywell product line is fairly new at the time of my review -- I couldn't find any contractors with actual experience installing it so I offered a deal to the folks who were nicest on the phone: How's about a reduction in the installation rate for the privilege of using mine as a learning opportunity. They took me upon the deal so for $130 the wiring of the EIM (wireless module) and overall verification of system performance we were done! (One contractor bid $600 and another bid $300 -- I had already physically installed the humidifier, and it only took the tech two hours to complete his portion, so some of those HVAC contractors are accustomed to making $150 to $300 an hour -- but not off me!)
Again, couldn't be happier with the Honeywell product.
FURTHER UPDATE: I installed the new Humidistat, and the unit is now working perfectly. I installed the unit in my return duct, in order to avoid any of the heat warping issues encountered by other users. This would be especially helpful if you are installing the unit on a Gas or Oil fired furnace.
I highly recommend it for dry climates.

Some reviews stated it was hard to install. The instructions were straight forward. I took my time but did complete the install on a Saturday afternoon in about 4 hours. Could have been quicker if I wasn't distracted by golf on the TV.
My only issue is in the description on Amazon. It states that the installation kit is not included which is wrong. Everything you need to complete the install is in the box.
I also noticed that in some instances when the humidifier is ON and more water is flowing that the drain can't handle the flow and it over spills.
For myself, it's nightmare
