How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin' Days (The Tale of Bryant Adams Book 1) Kindle Edition
Things not to do when you find out you’re a wizard:
#1 Do not destroy your dad’s apartment with magical fire. You WILL NOT get the security deposit back.
#2 Do not form an alliance with the guy who is trying to murder you. This will end badly.
#3 Do not drag the girl you’re desperately in love with into your wizard mess. You risk her watching you fail miserably.
#4 Under no circumstances should you get in the middle of an epic magical battle. Death will happen. Lots of death and bad things.
I found a magic cell phone, opened an app I shouldn't have, burned down my high school's theatre, and it was all downhill from there. A seer guarded by the undead is my only hope for keeping my mom alive, and I'm pretty sure the cops are after me for destroying my dad's penthouse.
But it gets better! Now I'm stuck being the sidekick to the guy who got me into this mess in the first place. It'll be a miracle if I survive until Monday.

Review
Megan O'Russell delivers a fun and unique adventure which finds a magical phone in the hands of a normal teenager. Bryant is ordinary, often overlooked, and gets flustered around the girl of his dreams. No one would guess his dad is rich, but that's how Bryant prefers it. Bryant chooses keep his dad's wealth a secret which says a lot about his character because by doing this he's choosing to just be himself and be accepted for who he is. His best friend Devon has a charming and outgoing personality that wins everyone over, but he's also more than this. He's a loyal friend and accepts Bryant for who he is while also not shying away from being honest. Elizabeth is described as the perfect girl by Bryant, who has been smitten with her for years. She's the opposite of Bryant in attitude as she's outspoken and takes charge of the situation.
The phone offers these three teenagers a chance of adventure and chaos, while changing the dynamics between them. O'Russell takes a different approach to the idea of magic by giving it a modern spin through use of apps to do spells. The spells are so much fun, though they come with consequences such as setting things on fire and turning a flower into a giant bean-stalk equivalent plant. This twist on spells is what makes the story so much fun because it adds chaos and eccentricity to the idea of ordinary. The humor is often derived through the chaos the phone creates, but it's also drawn out of the dynamics of the characters and through Bryant's mom who adds charm whenever she's around. How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Friggin' Days is funny and chaotic, a unique take on magic and adventure, with twists and surprises, charming characters and a magical phone.

About the author
Megan started writing when she discovered playing Cordelia in King Lear leaves you way too much time waiting backstage. She began her career as an author during an ill-fated trip to Oz. She hasn't stopped writing (even when living on a tour bus) since.
Megan's wanderlust has led her all over the globe. When she's not planning her next escapade, she's diving into fantasy worlds where she doesn't have to worry about what rules she's supposed to follow or how many pairs of socks she can fit in her suitcase.
Her latest series, Fracture Pact, finds seven teens pulling off the heist of the century to save magic. Psst…this book may feed on her love of Newport, RI, Manhattan, Las Vegas, mountains, and botanical gardens. Megan has a weakness for road trips. Having vampires, werewolves, mermaids, and hackers involved just adds to the excitement.
Her love of storytelling has helped Megan weave her real-life exploits into eight different book series. From the epic fantasy world of Ilbrea to the paranormal dystopian romance of Girl of Glass, there is always a new way to escape into adventure.
Megan would love to connect with you on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or TikTok but feels obliged to warn you in advance that you will be hearing about her cats…a lot.

Bryant mostly just wants to be cool like his best friend Devon, remind the girl of his dreams that he actually exists, and just avoid being dragged into his mom's theater productions. But when he stumbles upon a magic cell phone -- and almost burns down his school in the process -- he, Devon, and his crush Elizabeth are swept into a magical side of New York they never knew existed. Now if they can just get rid of the phone before it gets them killed...
This book does a great job of balancing action and humor, and at building a world-within-ours and a magic system that feel believable and unique. The pace is brisk, the author does a good job at explaining things in a natural manner without resorting to massive infodumps, and while the book is technically YA it avoids some of the pitfalls that can make YA fiction eyeroll-inducing to read. The book pretty quickly quashes notions of a romantic rivalry and/or a love triangle the moment they start to crop up, for example...
The characters -- at least the main characters -- are well-done as well. I found myself liking Bryant, Elizabeth, and Devon, and enjoying their banter and misadventures. Eric started out as a rather flat villain but became more interesting the further the book went on, and even minor characters like Bryant's mom and Eric's outcast witch friend were fun. The villains are pretty flat and one-note, unfortunately, but do provide a suitable amount of menace.
"How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin' Days" is a wild and funny ride, an urban fantasy that's both exciting and hilarious. And while technically aimed at the YA crowd, it can be enjoyed by both teens and adults.

Bryant is weird enough without magic. He's the geeky, quiet kid at school. He sticks his head in the sand, happy to be invisible and ignored, watching the people he cares about actually enjoy life. His mum teaches Drama (roping in her son, of course); his best friend is the coolest guy in school; his dad is a millionaire (off doing what millionaires do); and his crush is simply being perfect.
Bryant's life takes an odd turn, when he finds a mobile phone, dropped by a very pale-looking guy.
Before he can see about returning it to its rightful owner, Bryant accidentally sets the school on fire with an app, then destroys his dad's apartment with a tornado.
Suddenly things aren't as straight-forward, and he's joined by his best friend Devon, and crush Elizabeth. They have a mission to keep the powerful phone from falling into the wrong hands.
On their journey, they learn about the world of magic beneath their feet, and the battle going on between the light and shadows.
This story was somewhat kooky to start with, but by half-way I was really enjoying it.
I was a little disappointed that Bryant did become just a sidekick - I know it mentions it in the blurb, and I know it's in keeping with his character to let someone else lead; but this was supposed to be his story, and he got relegated to a supporting player. Eric is basically in charge, and Devon was being pro-active, even Elizabeth stepped up and played her part. Meanwhile, Bryant was there to provide more fire-power.
There's plenty of danger and action, and it establishes that even in this magical world, nothing is clear-cut. It keeps you guessing as to who are the good-guys/bad-guys/ambiguously-grey-guys.
Overall, this was fun, and I look forward to the rest of the series.
