Police forces across the United States have been transformed into extensions of the military. Our towns and cities have become battlefields, and we the American people are now the enemy combatants to be spied on, tracked, frisked, and searched. For those who resist, the consequences can be a one-way trip to jail, or even death. Battlefield America: The War on the American People is constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead’s terrifying portrait of a nation at war with itself. In exchange for safe schools and lower crime rates, we have opened the doors to militarized police, zero tolerance policies in schools, and SWAT team raids. The insidious shift was so subtle that most of us had no idea it was happening. This follow-up to Whitehead’s award-winning A Government of Wolves, is a brutal critique of an America on the verge of destroying the very freedoms that define it. Hands up!―the police state has arrived.

About the Author

John W. Whitehead is an attorney and author who has written, debated and practiced widely in the area of constitutional law and human rights. Whitehead’s concern for the persecuted and oppressed led him, in 1982, to establish The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit civil liberties and human rights organization whose international headquarters are located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Deeply committed to protecting the constitutional freedoms of every American and the integral human rights of all people, The Rutherford Institute has emerged as a prominent leader in the national dialogue on civil liberties and human rights and a formidable champion of the Constitution. Whitehead serves as the Institute’s president and spokesperson. Widely recognized as one of the nation’s most vocal and involved civil liberties attorneys, Whitehead’s approach to civil liberties issues has earned him numerous accolades and accomplishments, including the Hungarian Medal of Freedom and the 2010 Milner S. Ball Lifetime Achievement Award for “[his] decades of difficult and important work, as well as [his] impeccable integrity in defending civil liberties for all.” As nationally syndicated columnist Nat Hentoff observed about Whitehead: “John Whitehead is not only one of the nation’s most consistent and persistent civil libertarians. He is also a remarkably perceptive illustrator of our popular culture, its insights and dangers. I often believe that John Whitehead is channeling the principles of James Madison, who would be very proud of him.” Born in 1946 in Tennessee, John W. Whitehead earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas in 1969 and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1974. He served as an officer in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The book tells about how people’s liberties and rights are being trampled on by the government in the United States. Here are some examples that the book mentions: Today, 17,000 local police forces are equipped with military equipment. By the year 2020, approximately 30,000 drones are expected to occupy U.S. airspace. 80% of asset forfeiture cases result in no charges against the property owner. Challenging these takings in court can cost property owners more than the value of the confiscated property itself. The school security industry is estimated to be worth $4.9 billion by 2013. A lot of drivers have triggered the red light cameras simply by making a right turn on red or crossing the sensor but not advancing into the intersection. Soon these drivers receive tickets in the mail. Local governments work with the Australian corporation by the name of Redflex. Some research has shown that the red light cameras have actually increased the number of the accidents. By reducing the length of yellow lights by a mere half a second, the number of citations doubled. Traffic citations dropped by 90% when yellow light time was increased from 3 seconds to the minimum of 4.3 seconds. Chicago has a total of 13,400 police officers resulting in 227 police officers per square mile. New York City has 36,000 police officers resulting in 303 police officers per square mile. Los Angeles has a total of 10,000 police officers resulting in 469 police officers per square mile. Los Angeles spends 55% of its discretionary budget on police while the street repair and maintenance spending has declined 36%. This is a well-written and well-documented book.

I originally was not sure what this book was about. But I then saw a few reviews from people I respect saying what a great book it is. They were right!!! This book covers so many aspects of what America is becoming and why. Primary of these is that America is become a militarized police state created by the Federal Government by giving/granting money and military equipment to local police departments. The local police in turn feel a need to use the equipment provided and oftentimes does so in direct violation of the U. S. Constitution. Unfortunately the courts have supported this mis-use through its decisions supporting the police. This does not mean local police are not to be supported and protected but local police should always follow the Constitution thus guaranteeing our individual rights and freedoms which you have to admit are eroding in favor of protection from terrorism. Also very well explained and defined is the move towards constant surveillance no matter where you go and what you do. The government has the ability and uses it when they are able to track our every movement, listen to our every conversation over a cell phone, even turn our cell phones on and off without our permission. It has also formed alliances with corporations to track what we buy and why. In fact there is nothing that our own government who is suppose to be working for us and protecting our privacy and freedoms can spy on - nothing. The question becomes what are we as a nation going to do about it. For the most part - apparently nothing as everyone goes about his or business without a concern in the world - WRONG ANSWER! I dare say that the government is monitoring this post as it is unfavorable to the government. More importantly, with every such post the government has more and more reason to mistrust me and put me like you on watchlists and then use those lists to advance their position whenever the need should arise. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK TO MAKE YOU THINK AND MAKE YOU MORE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND WHAT YOU DO. Whenever you think when you otherwise may not have, it is a very good thing.

Scary book, but if you want to know what the government is up to, then this is a must read. I don't necessarily believe everything I read, but I am not naive either. The author is very informed. Like it says, don't read before bedtime or you won't be able to sleep<(unless you have the peace of God)>

    Outstanding!
Even for those of us who have more or less followed the evolution of world geopolitics/sociology in the last few years, there is something else to be learned. I am sure it took a lot of courage to write this book. I have only seen before in other published work, fragments of what is dealt with in this book, but not the whole "enchilada." The quotations are very opportune, which is not usually the case, and the references very complete and abundant.

What is there to be criticized? I'd have liked to see at least some discussion of how the future will be affected now that the universal bully finds it cannot keep the same behavior unchanged, because there are constraints imposed by other countries, powerful enough to have a say in world matters. And also, how the world will be affected in the short term, when the financial crisis hits in full intensity, and the bully is forced to admit it cannot meet its obligations. I'll be obliged if anybody can tell me where a discussion of these matters can be found.

Last but not least, there is the matter of the possibility of changing something about the future, by whatever means, which very few authors want to deal with. All feel the obligation to give some hope. Whitehead doesn't, and I agree. Things have gone too far already, and there is no way to stop the process. I know this sounds pessimistic. Correct me if I am wrong. In short, I can't recommend it more strongly.

Really good book with lots of detailed examples of how the above countries have morphed into full blown autocratic police states over the past 50 years or so. A must read for every citizen. It's past time for physical revolt - nothing less will do to save the future of mankind from total enslavement by neocon zionists
