4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

One of the most neglected issues for women in recovery from addiction and trauma is sexuality. With candor and compassion, Dr. Covington reminds readers that recovery "is about living life fully and completely, and sexual recovery is integral to the fullness of your life." Awakening Your Sexuality gives women the tools to process their sexual histories, understand their sexual selves, and create the fulfilling sexual lives they want. Honest, sensitive case studies and relevant exercises provide gentle, step-by-step guidance to help women confront guilt, shame, and addiction; become aware of their body images and behavioral patterns; honor and accept their pasts; and begin the liberating journey of sexual recovery and growth.

Extremely disappointing and even frustrating at times since this book emphasizes on addictions and recovery - from addictions.
When I purchased this book I thought that recovery meant turning things around - no matter what the cause might have been. This book mentions over and again addictions which makes it all the more difficult to relate if you have never gone down that road.
I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a recovering alcoholic or are considering taking part in a 12 step programs.
For all others, check out ''Sex Smart - How your childhood shaped your sexuality and what to do about it'', you might find it more enlightning.

I thought this book went overboard. Emphasis on the nitty-gritty. Reduces to clinical -- what is so much more. Biased. Posturing her own perceptions. Covington assumes she has authority on what is now natural, good and right .. touting her credentials.

She misses the forest for the trees.

Left me cold. Not for anyone alive & well -- or a trace of romance in their soul... But if you are easily manipulated .. go for it.

I am not a recovering alcoholic, but since I harbor a lot of self-hate and have had an eating disorder, my counselor advised me to read this book. The information (as stated in the title) leans heavily towards woman who are recovering from alcohol or drug addictions. In your head, if you can change those words to match whatever compulsion you struggle with, this book can help anyone. This would be an excellent book for any woman, no matter what your past has been or what you're dealing with in the present, it's very educational. We all come with different stories and backgrounds when it comes to this topic. It's amazing how little women discuss or consider their sexuality when they have lived in a female body for so many years. We let outside influences teach us about how we should act and feel, rather than hearing from other women or looking within ourselves.
This book discusses everything that could possibly make you uncomfortable when it comes to your body in a very calming, reassuring way. From sexual abuse to homosexuality to influences of societal norms and much, much more, this book seems to touch on every subject that could possibly affect our feelings towards our bodies. Just when you thought you were alone in things you've gone through, this book let's you know that you're not.
The one part I wasn't expecting was how the author incorporates the stories of 6 or so women throughout the book. But, this really helps you feel like you're at a group-meeting or something, where you hear the stories of other people and can occasionally relate.
I would recommend this book to all women and anyone who educates/raises young girls. This is a beautiful book to help initiate conversations between moms and daughters, and sex education teachers and students. Men could also greatly benefit from reading this book. I think it would help them gain insight about women, and how experiences and society affects women. Men could learn to modify the way in which they think and act towards women, which would help them contribute to the fostering of healthier females in our society.
Thank you, Stephanie, for being so insightful, courageous and encouraging:)

I love this book! It starts off giving examples of 4 womens 'stories' of growing up, experiences and how they affected them. Its given me lots of answers and things to think about. I'd highly recommend it.
