Embodied Enlightenment: Living Your Awakening in Every Moment Paperback – June 1, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
In Embodied Enlightenment, contemporary spiritual teacher Amoda Maa Jeevan dispels the outdated view of a transcendent enlightenment and instead presents a new, feminine expression of awakened consciousness for all—one that is felt and known through what our everyday lives are made of: our emotions, bodies, intimate relationships, work, and life’s purpose. This book is a direct invitation to awaken in a profound, embodied way, and to participate in a collective evolution that can create a new world.
When many of us think of enlightenment, we may envision a life of seclusion and contemplation, transcending the body and worldly attachments, or the achievement of karmic perfection. But what if, rather than something reserved for the mountaintop meditator or sage, the call to awaken is meant for us all? And how can we consciously live that awakening in the midst of our complex, messy, modern lives?
Speaking from her own awakened experience, Amoda Maa Jeevan offers a timeless wisdom, busting some of the common myths about enlightenment and addressing topics often excluded from more traditional spiritual conversations—from the connection between consciousness and the body to relationships to planetary health. In addition, she covers the unfamiliar territory of what happens after enlightenment, delving into awakened action, creative expression, and more.
There’s an urgency today to evolve beyond humanity’s current ego-based paradigm, and along with it, a unique expression of enlightenment is emerging. With clarity, passion, and grace, Embodied Enlightenment invites you on an exploration of consciousness that embraces both the messiness of your earthly experience and the non-duality of pure awareness, offering guidance on how your daily life can bring you into alignment with a divine destiny of individual and collective awakening.

Review
—Shanti Einolander, founder of ONE The Magazine
“Embodied Enlightenment eloquently challenges us to honestly and intimately meet our experience just as it is, and to awaken out of the trance of the perpetually seeking separate self. This is a deeply illuminating description of how an awakened life transmutes the ordinary arenas of relationships, work, sex, money, the body, and life purpose. A beautifully written, inspiring, and distinctly feminine call to consciously embody the unfolding edge of evolution. I highly recommend it!”
—John J.Prendergast, PhD, author of In Touch, adjunct professor of psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies, and psychotherapist
“Amoda Maa reminds us that enlightenment is not simply a transcendent spiritual orgasm into knowing ourselves as unchanging awareness; it invites us ever more deeply into our humanity, into the paradoxes of life, with an unconditional embrace. Her voice is a breath of fresh air in its precision and breadth, as well as its depth and down-to-earth parlance. I am sure Embodied Enlightenment will become a true companion to those willing to walk an integrated spiritual path.”
—Miranda Macpherson, author of Boundless Love
“With diamond-like clarity, a cup of compassion, and an almost poetic intensity, Amoda Maa debunks the myth of enlightenment, addressing many commonly held concerns and questions about the process of awakening. No topic is off limits in this conversation as she dismantles the scaffolding of our defenses, our beliefs—the very mechanism of seeking itself. I highly recommend this beautifully written and insightful book to anyone at any stage in their spiritual evolution. You are invited to dive in, face your personal wounds with ‘courage and tender honesty,’ challenge your assumptions, and root the full flowering of your consciousness in the very belly of your humanity.”
—Kirtana, singer, songwriter, and recording artist of songs for awakening
“Amoda Maa is a gracious and powerful guide who steers a clear and honest path through the mist of confusion and misunderstanding about the awakened state to hold a new, revelatory light to all that was previously unclear or speculated on. Here, the old, outmoded ways of viewing liberation are cast aside for a more informed, enriching vision of enlightenment—one that embraces our twenty-first-century sensibilities and shies away from nothing.”
—Stephen Gawtry, managing editor of Watkins Mind Body Spirit Magazine
“As the invitation to awaken from the dream of separation is being felt more strongly, both on a collective and individual level, so too arises the need for skillful guides familiar with this paradoxical new landscape. Amoda Maa is one such friend on the path; a gentle but rigorous companion on the journey of unfolding to being both fully awake and fully human. Embodied Enlightenment is a beautiful and precious gift to an emerging new humanity.”
—Julian Noyce, founder of Non-Duality Press
“Enlightenment has long been associated with an austere, recluse lifestyle. But today, people fully engaged in worldly responsibilities are waking up. Ancient traditions may not adequately support their awakening in the midst of ‘real-world’ concerns such as health, finances, relationships, et cetera. Amoda Maa is one of the brightest of a new generation of spiritual teachers who are meeting that need. She has been prepared for this role in a crucible of personal transformation, and is now fulfilling it admirably.”
—Rick Archer, creator and host of Buddha at the Gas Pump
"Given everything that is going on in the world today, more spiritual seekers are beginning to suspect that enlightenment isn’t only about living a life that transcends the material world. Seekers are beginning to realize it’s time to live their principles in the everyday world. This, of course, is more along the lines of the feminine awakened consciousness, something we’ve been told is trying to make its appearance in our world. ...
Touching on everything from relationships to work to the body, Amoda Maa teaches how to live a femininely embodied spirituality... She writes in an authoritative but supportive style that will challenge some closely held beliefs, but will also release readers into making some new choices in how they approach living their spirituality."
—New Spirit Journal
About the Author
Amoda Maa is a contemporary spiritual teacher, author, and speaker. After years of spiritual seeking, meditation, and immersion in psychospiritual practices, an experience of the dark night of the soul led her to a profound inner awakening. Then, after a long period of integration, she began speaking from silence in small gatherings. She offers meetings and retreats, and is a frequent speaker at conferences and events, attracting spiritual seekers and people looking for peace and fulfillment in an increasingly chaotic world. Her teachings are free of religion and tradition, and she brings to them a deep understanding of the human journey, born out of her own experience.
Amoda Maa is author of Radical Awakening (formerly How to Find God in Everything) and Change Your Life, Change Your World, both of which arose out of a mystical vision around the time of her awakening. In this vision, she was shown the key to humanity’s suffering and the potential for the birth of a new consciousness and world. Embodied Enlightenment is based on both her vision for humanity and the conversations on the cutting edge of spiritual inquiry in her meetings with people from all around the world. She lives with her husband and beloved, Kavi, in California. To learn more, visit http://www.amodamaa.com.

About the author

Amoda Maa is a spiritual teacher, offering meetings and retreats to support and deepen the living of an awakened life. She has been sharing her teachings since 2012, initially at small gatherings. Today, her teachings are followed by a growing number of seekers world-wide.
Amoda brings to her teachings a depth and breadth of understanding of the human journey, born out of her own immersion in the furnace of personal transformation. In 2002, in the depths of existential aloneness, she experienced a profound awakening in which there was a liberation of self from the knot of ego and an ongoing unfoldment into inner silence. After a long period of integration, in which all seeking and all methods stopped, she started to speak in public. Her teachings are free of any ideology and are not affiliated with any lineage or tradition. While she is often referred to as a ‘nondual teacher,’ she prefers to emphasize the full embracement of the human experience as a path to liberation. Her work continues to evolve in alignment with the real-life concerns of the modern-day seeker of peace and fulfillment in an increasingly chaotic world.
Amoda has been a speaker at the Conference for Nondual Wisdom and Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, a regular speaker at the Science and Nonduality Conference in California, a guest teacher at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Wellness in Massachusetts, a guest teacher at Wisdom’s Goldenrod Center for Philosophic Studies in New York, a guest on numerous radio and podcast shows, and her work has been featured in a number of magazines (including Watkins Mind Body Spirit Magazine and Conscious Lifestyle Magazine). She is the author of four books ("How to Find God in Everything”, “Change Your Life, Change Your World”, “Radical Awakening”, and”Embodied Enlightenment”) with translations in 5 languages.
Amoda lives with her husband and beloved Kavi Jezzie Hockaday, a poet and talented musician, who supports the teaching and offers private sessions. In 2016 Amoda and Kavi left their home in England to follow an inner calling and embark on a new adventure in America. They live in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She pulled me in with her deep compassion and understanding of this human existence and that the goal isn't to "get away" from it but to go ever deeper into it. She expresses herself in ways that made me understand she isn't just talking about this process, she has lived it. She has experienced this world, in all its glory, and has come out on the other side, with a beautiful understanding of it. She has turned around and is now throwing those of us who also desire a deeper understanding, a rope. That rope is this book, Embodied Enlightenment.
I have had the privilege to sit in Satsang with Amoda Maa and can share that I have had a profound understanding of my own process through her words. I have read this book from cover to cover, have dog eared the pages and have highlighted many sections. I pick this book up whenever I need a quick shot of clarity for this sometimes muddled world. I read it at night, right before I drift off to sleep, as it helps calm my being. I connect with the deeper love that exists within all of us, through Amoda Maa's words.
This book is Truth and if you are a Truth Seeker, you will love it!
It’s easy to read nondual books & attend satsangs, & come away with a bunch of terms, ideas & approaches… yet these all belong to the seeker, rather than the founder. Amoda’s book is clear on what’s most important.
In one amazing chapter “Discovering the Luminosity of Being Present in the Body”, she says that “It is this light that animates you… You see the light because you are the light: this is oneness” She asks us to “give yourself totally to the inquiry into what is true beyond all inherited concepts, ideas and beliefs”. That true freedom “requires you to stop investing in your personal story, whether it is a story of victimhood or transcendence… There is a death of the self-identity that is wrapped around ego.”
In a chapter on relationships, she sees clearly that seeking a relationship is an expression of the "core belief in separation"... that "the search for the perfect partner, soul mate, or 'the one' is exactly the same as the search for enlightenment...that it sets up mental and emotional projections onto reality, creating a fantasy that this longing can be satisfied by something in the external world of form."
Amoda distinguishes between the “horizontal” movement of the egoic mind, with it’s likes & dislikes, & labels… and the “vertical” dimension of being, that of true awakening in every moment. This book is a clear & valuable approach to nonduality and spirituality.
First of all I love the way Amoda Maa writes, the content is always engaging and easy to read. I have not had the opportunity to meet with Amoda Maa in person, but I have listened to her talking on Youtube videos, and this book flows with her lively, compassionate and peaceful presence.
The chapters progress from an overall view of the world we are living in today towards an ever deeper enquiry into what it means to be a fully embodied and awakened human being living in today's world. As the book progresses I am finding that almost every page has a sentence or paragraph that jumps out at me to read and re-read and then invites me to stop and digest and contemplate.
As someone who has a life-time habit to overcome of not being fully present in my body, I particularly enjoyed the chapter on "The Body as A Gateway To Liberation." "Mindfulness" is the big buzzword today in discussions relating to emotional and psychological well-being in todays fast-paced lifestyle. But from my experience, mindfulness by itself is not enough. We need to be learn to be fully embodied. Amoda Maa beautifully explains why this is so.
I know that I will be keeping this book by my side to revisit long after I finish it on this first round. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I tried really hard to stay focused on the words of Amoda Maa in her latest book, Embodied Enlightenment, and stay with the conventions of this first layer of understanding...but my levels of engagement kept sinking deeper to find the sense of the person who was the author. In doing so I noticed that whether she was articulating something simple or profound, interesting or less so to me, none of this seemed to matter. What I was mostly receiving within her words was an imbedded sense of the author as a person whom I felt most clearly had a sense of reality awake inside her.
This impression was so strong that at some points it occurred to me that in many ways Amoda could be writing about the curiosities and intricacies of plumbing washing machines, and there would be a chance that I would still have received the same impression ! So, from this perspective it may be wise not to bank too much on my review of the text of her latest work, admirable though it may be, as I was somewhere else while I was reading it.
What I can say is that Amodha seems to be involved in encouraging the discovery of what it means to act on one's spiritual development within very human and ordinary context of experience. No caves or monasteries sought here, just a range of 'ordinary' dimensions of life which are sewn unpretentiously with the extraordinary.
For Amoda the subject of normal experience is so broad there is obviously not enough time or space within a single book, to explore in any real depth such subject matter in an encompassing way - and how it can be the context for an illuminated life. So understandably, there is some skipping through a diverse range of subjects and scenarios with not enough time to flesh them out but nevertheless we are granted repeated flashes of insights as they come.
Because of this structural restriction I experienced this writing as both piecemeal and masterful... and this was further reflected in the merger of cultural themes reflected in this book. In today's publications there seems to be an increased conflation between works concerned with personal development /self-help/self-love ...and the concept of the modern political self, ..and other literature concerned with the purpose of spiritual development.
However softened it may be, the first type of publication is concerned with the will to further fulfil the egoic interests of the individual. The last form of literature, in its fullest expression, is concerned with the internal fires of the destruction of the self and divine mysteries of rebirth. So, it is the wonder of Amoda Maa's writing and thinking beyond conventional divisions, that she manages to keep her subject open to all and sew the deep and unyielding understandings of the spiritual journey within a package which might at least, at face value, be seen as something else.
