Out of Sight by Melissa Klein is the second book in the author's Out of Uniform series. I haven't read the first book and was read this story as a stand alone without any problems. It's also my first book by the author and I'll be anxious to read the rest of the series.
Mia Jones and Hank Taggart grew up in the foster care system and are just like the family they never had. She is a fantastic ADA lawyer who goes for conviction whenever she's in court but one of her cases has struck back with a violent attack putting her in a coma. Mia is now learning everything again and dealing with TBI will be hard but with her fiance and Hank by her side she hopes to battle back to her new normal life. But there is something sinister out there trying to make sure she doesn't remember. Hank is very suspicious of her fiance Tripp but he had his own worries to deal with plus what he feels for Mia is more than brotherly love. Luckily, she tells Tripp to take a hike because now that she knows how Hank feels she'll do whatever she can to convince him that what they feel is forever.
Hank Taggart is a Navy aviator who had to ditch his F-18 into the ocean when he couldn't see the catch wire. Now he's grounded and waiting for doctors to determine if he'll be able to fly again. But as soon as he's told of Mia's attack he'll do whatever it takes to get her better again. But will he be able to deny that he feels more than brotherly love for her? As the doctor's tell him the news that he has a genetic eye disease, he'll also learn that Mia has something the attacker doesn't want known and who they are will surprise you. Can Hank and Mia find the love they didn't have as children? Will Mia be able to escape a second time from someone who wants her dead?
I loved how the author researched TBI and also RP as it brings so much to the reader to understand how it changes the patients lives.
I enjoyed reading this story about foster siblings becoming lovers. This is not among my favorite tropes, but I thought it was well crafted: “He couldn’t recall when exactly his feelings for her began to change. Rather than a seismic shift that resulted in an earthquake, the change came subtly like spring slipping slowly into summer.” (Loc. 894).
Mia and Hank are both strong and likeable characters. Hank sometimes acts like a jerk, but I guess I even liked those imperfections, he seemed more real. I just felt that he was so obsessed with resisting and fighting the attraction that when he finally gave in it seemed too sudden. But he was so protective and tender with Mia…
Both main characters are dealing with life-altering medical issues in this story and I liked how the author, Melissa Klein, dramatized them, specially Mia’s traumatic brain injury (no spoilers here, the blurb is explicit about that) – I thought it was very well handled, realistically and showing knowledge and research about its implications and effects. The hero’s diagnosis is understandably not as developed and takes a back seat to Mia’s problems. And maybe his character is overdone when Klein gives him an additional serious problem.
I would love to read more about these two people because, in the end, their story and their issues felt a bit incomplete. I was also very curious about some delightful secondary characters: Bash, the SEAL/writer, and Hank’s biological brothers, dealing with the same medical issues.
Mia and Hank had such an incredible relationship. Having grown up in foster care together, they understand one another on a level no one else ever could. Their connection was strong and the tension created by their romantic feelings was intense. While I could understand Hanks reluctance (for several reasons), I grew weary of it after awhile. It did create angst but it was the same angst throughout. The addition of the mystery surrounding Mia's attack kept the story moving and allowed for a break in the drama of the relationship. Bits and pieces of the mystery were woven into the story. It was fun collecting little clues and trying to decipher who could be behind everything.
