What Does A Princess Really Look Like? (Brave Like A Girl Series) Hardcover – Picture Book, July 1, 2018

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 116 ratings

In the tradition of Not All Princesses Dress in Pink and Princess in Black, What Does a Princess Really Look Like? breaks many old princess stereotypes.
In this story, Chloe sets out to craft her very own princess. She quickly realizes that princesses are more than just frilly dresses and tiaras.

"Inside of our head is where our smarts are," she says to herself, " And this princess is very smart."

Chloe discovers that her power is not in how she looks, but in how she can affect others.

"You need a voice to speak kind words. But you also need to tell people when you are feeling frustrated."

Chloe learns that princesses are smart, kind but assertive, brave, strong and determined.

"When you know what you want, not much can stop you."

In the end, Chloe's dads help her understand what princesses are
not: Perfect. Chloe learns that her imperfections make her uniquely who she is.

In his debut children's picture book, Mark Loewen tells an important story that celebrates girl power and moves us to value the courage, determination, kindness, assertiveness, and "smarts" over beauty. Perfect for fans of
The Paper Bag Princess and Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?, What Does a Princess Really Look Like? challenges gender stereotypes showing girls it's not how they look but what they do for others that matters.

"What Does a Princess Really Look Like?" is a feminist take the princess story, as told in our family. Based on conversations with my daughter, about what you can do for the world is more important than how the world sees you.

For Parents as much as for Kids!
This beautiful book champions Chloe to tap into her strength, kindness, and heart—striving for the joy of authenticity over any particular external standard. As a parent, reading this story reminds me to tend to my children’s essence and inherent goodness—to put myself aside so that I can love them better! Bravo!

I have 2 daughters, and the oldest (4) is a bit of a girly tomboy. She loves wearing dresses, but is obsessed with Star Wars, ninjas, superheroes, and villains. Princesses have never really been her thing, unless you count a brief infatuation with Merida and Moana (who isn't a princess).

This book is a game-changer, even for her! She was a bit hesitant to read it at first, but as soon as we got into it, she asked for it over and over again. She sleeps with it in her bed every night now so she can "read" it herself until she falls asleep. She calls it her "Chloe book". I love this book because it is really empowering for young girls. It's changing the princess narrative and helps define not only what it means to be a leader, but how a girl can be a leader. My absolute favorite part is when Chloe is drawing the mouth and says that a princess needs a mouth to say kind words, but to also speak up when something is wrong. As a parent of young girls I can't stress the importance of this enough to them.

I love this book because it found a low key way of showing girls how to be strong without simply being a narrative/biography of other strong women in history and their incredible accomplishments. We have a lot of books like that, and while important, the history lesson can be a bit dry for small kids. This book is different because it shows how every girl can be strong in every day life by simply being self confident. That's something I struggled with as a kid. Female confidence was always viewed as vanity and a lack of humility. It took my until my adulthood to realize that I even had any sort of confidence, that it wasn't at all tied into looks, and that being confident isn't a bad thing. I don't want my girls to grow up the same way. I like that the book highlights that an imperfection doesn't mean something was a mistake or that a bump in the road means the journey must come to an end.

If you have kids, please read this book to them.

Also, Chloe has 2 dads. This was our first venture into an official LGBTQ+ book for kids (we are a mom/dad household), and our girls didn't bat an eye. It was a good, casual reinforcement of our lesson about marrying someone who is kind and makes your heart happy.

It is a well-written creation and easy read. What little girl doesn’t think about being a princess in their tender years? I know I did! And this little beauty will take them to that precious land. Certain, little ones will adore having this beauty on their bookshelf. What a fantastic book cover look. The author has done a great job in creating this children’s book. BTW, I adored the characters’ designs – very colorful and full of life. Kudos, to you, Mark Loewen!

The star of this story is Chloe, who isn't your typical princess and whose spunky personality shines in the book. Includes a fun activity at the end where kids can draw their own version of a princess. I wasn't thrilled with the illustrations. They match the text well and have emotion but the style wasn't for me. I WAS thrilled with Chloe's two doting dads.

Highly, Highly recommend. The author does an incredible job of re-designing the 'whys' of wanting to be a princess. Chloe is a great role model for young girls (and boys) as she recognizes and builds upon what makes a person 'royal'. My five year old son was reluctant to read the book at first, "I don't like Princesses!" However, as we continued to read, he became more engaged and by the time we were finished he was sitting in my lap wanting to read it again. Go Chloe! Go Girls!

My little girl absolutely adores princesses, which is great and all... but a lot of portrayals of princesses manage to effectively convey only that a princess is someone who wears pretty dresses and tiaras. Certainly these things are fun, but I appreciated that this story took us through the thought process of Chloe as she realized that princesses a quite a bit more than the pretty dress and crown! A fun story and definitely a bedtime reading staple in our house!

LOVE this sweet book for our princess-obsessed daughter. We work on having books to remind her that her worth isn't based on her appearance, though princesses are very pretty. This is an excellent book for just that. She loves it! Being a great princess is so much more than being 'pretty' and having riches.

I bought this book for my niece who is having a baby in October. We don’t know the gender. What I love about this book is that it is great for either a boy or a girl. It shares a great message about how to respect females and to love who you are. I love as well the diversity of two dads and a book written to include families in the LGBT community.
