Product Description

From the manufacturer

1

The RODE VideoMic is a professional grade shotgun microphone. Based on the latest Film industry technology, the VideoMic is designed specifically for use with high quality digital video cameras. The microphone exhibits low noise and an unusually wide bandwidth for its size. It is ultra lightweight, yet rugged due to it's ABS construction. The VideoMic is powered by a standard 9 V battery and offers a low battery LED status indicator and a switchable high pass filter to reduce unwanted low frequency rumble. The VideoMic attaches to any camcorder that has the standard camera-shoe fitting and utilizes a stereo mini jack for audio output. RODE VideoMic Shotgun Microphone Features Broadcast and studio sound quality Rugged reinforced ABS construction two step high-pass filter - flat or 80 Hz integrated shock mount 9 V battery operation condenser transducer low noise circuitry low handling noise includes windscreen integrated camera-shoe mount. Connector: 1/8"

1

A modern classic. The RØDE VideoMic is a shotgun microphone designed for use with consumer video cameras and personal audio recorders. It features a studio grade ½” condenser capsule, highly directional super-cardioid polar pattern, selectable high-pass filter and two-stage level attenuation for recording loud sound sources. It’s shoe mount also features a 3/8” thread in the base for easy mounting on a boom pole or mic stand.

1

The super-cardioid polar pattern the VideoMic is highly directional, focusing on the subject in front of the camera, and minimising any surrounding sounds - perfect for delivering crips, clean audio on all your videos.

2

Key Features

  • High-quality directional on-camera microphone
  • Supercardioid polar pattern
  • Two-stage gain control, high-pass filter (80Hz)
  • Integrated Rycote Lyreu shock mounting
Long Battery Life

Pop a 9V battery in the VideoMic for up to 100 hours of operating time. The dedicated power LED changes from green to red when the battery should be replaced. The VideoMic can still function for approximately one hour once the power indicator turns red, but performance will be compromised. Use the power switch to conserve battery life during periods of inactivity.

Shotgun Mic with Directional Sound Pickup

Whereas most built-in camera microphones pick up sound from all directions, this microphone utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of it while attenuating sound from the sides and rear. Its active electronics and directional condenser element deliver more detailed audio than the mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders.

Easy Hookup to Camera

A coiled 3.5mm cable is permanently attached to the mic for fast hookup to your camera. The cable's 3.5mm TRS plug is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder.

I recently purchased this Mic so that i could use my Canon Sl1 for recording videos. I like the look and feel of the microphone on my camera. The mic stand has a lot of flex and give, so it does move a lot but it doesn't seem to affect sound at all but it also means its less likely to break. The microphone is very sensitive. I was testing it out at my kitchen table and during playback on my computer i heard a faint humming noise. After listening to it a few times i realized it picked up the sound of my refrigerator that was running during the time of recording. I haven't tested it at the 80hz setting. The only thing you have to be careful with is that the windjammer is a little bulky and i did notice a few strands hanging in front of my lens. I look forward to getting a lot of use out of this mic. It is weird that it uses 9v batteries. Not yet sure of how long the 9v will last but the door is pretty easy access although its a bit of a bear to try and get back perfectly closed.

I use this with my Canon 5D and its a great mic, it definitely improves audio quality.
Are there better mics? Yes. BUT this is an amazing mic, I'm sure it's the best mic possible for the price.

I prefer to use this with my Zoom H1, It makes the quality 10x better. Seriously.
When I plug the mic straight into the camera, the audio is good, but you can still hear some hiss.
When I plug it into my Zoom H1, It removes ALL hiss and gives me cinema-like audio quality.

I recommend this mic, but I also recommend you getting the Zoom H1 or the Tascam DR-05 to go with it.
Trust me it will give you the audio quality of a mic 3 or 4 times the price of this one.

The Windjammer does the job nicely. It blocks wind noise perfectly.
The shock absorber is great too.
The overall build quality is very nice, does not feel cheap.

I recommend this, but like I said, if you care about quality I would STRONGLY recommend buying a separate recorder.

I had a fantastic experience with Kellards regarding my purchase of the Rode VideoMic. Initially I had recieved what appeared to be an open box item. I contacted the company and recieved a new product with return box postage paid for my return item immediately. The whole transaction took just a few days. I would definitely purchase from this company again, they really do care about the customer!!!

The Rode VideoMic has been outstanding so far. I am in a band and am using this as an external mic with an HD video camera to capture our performances. The mic picks up lows and highs very well and as a shotgun mic minimizes peripheral crowd noise. It is a directional monoaural condenser mic which is what I needed based on the venues in which we perform and it does an outstanding job capturing full sound without distortion. The mic also has gain control settings inside the battery compartment which I have not had to use as of yet.

One note: I use a Sony video camera with this mic and had to purchase a universal hot shoe adapter to get the mic to mount on the camera...I got one for around $10 including shipping from EasyFoto (EzFoto Sony Camcorder "Active Interface Sho" to universal hot shoe adapter).

Overall I am extremely pleased with this microphone and with the company who sold it, Kellards.

This version of the Rode kit comes with a nice extra - the wind noise blocker similar to a dead cat. All in all worth the money as a decent shotgun for DSLR work. Next step up shotgun will be more than double the price point and will require XLR preamps.

    Pros
-Reasonably good sound - much better than DSLR and close to a portable recorder
-Light - because it's all plastic it does not add much weight to the camera
-Battery seems to last a long time
-Power light makes it easy to see if its left on
-Coiled cord is a nice feature making it good for cable management on DSLR
-Free wind screen with this kit

    Cons
-Sound not up to par of XLR mics with some internal noise at 1KHz
-Very cheap feeling - the whole thing is cast in typical chinese plastic part look and feel. No aluminum to be found
-Weird shape means it leans to the right (see photos) and is a bit off center.
-Wider pickup pattern than other shotguns of this size
-No pre-amp in this version means you need to max your DSLR levels or use a separate preamp.

The Rode VideoMic is a fantastic microphone for DSLR Videography! I bought this Mic in order to increase my audio quality on wedding films. As long as I keep the microphone pointed in the general direction of the subject it picks up their voice amazingly, and rejects further away objects like passing cars and birds chirping! The battery life is also superb. I've used this for multiple 10+ hour shoots and the battery is still going strong!

I highly recommend getting this Mic over the VideoMic Go, because of the battery in the mic. Although this might sound like a pain having to charge/replace batteries for the microphone, it helps you in post because of the PreAmps inside it, that don't rely on a camera's poor preamps. Don't go cheap on your audio, audiences will notice bad audio much faster than poor video quality! This Mic has such good audio that I was able to overlay the pastors voice on top of the video as if his voice was recorded in a studio.

I highly recommend this VideoMic to anyone looking for great Audio on a budget.

I have just recently started Vlogging and while I dont have much to compare it to, I can say that this is 1000% better than the built in mic of any Canon DSLR that I have used. Maybe someday down the road I can jump to the Pro model but for now this thing works pretty well. I used it just the other day at a seafood festival where it was about the windiest day I have ever been in and I thought for sure all of the audio would be too bad to use. Nope, I was able to use just about 95% of it. This was with the Fuzzy Windjammer on.
