For a quick and fun read, A Christmas Wager is a good bet. The wager between rakes ends in mischief and love, between a rake and a bluestocking woman. Anna D Allen, the author, knows how to tell a lively tale with wit and charm.

The story had the elements to be a very good novella or novel. Gerard and Elizabeth were likeable characters. Although Gerard doesnt recognize her at first, I liked that they were childhood pals - and really liked the detail that since they are only 4 years apart in differences and not being around children his age except for her that they did everything together growing up until she was 14. So many years passed and now she even wears eye glasses so its no surprise he didnt recognize her. But the novel should have been longer - they were to be there for the entire twelfth night holiday and everything happens in one night (the first night) and more in a summary type way. And although we know Elizabeth had always loved him, his change and fast declaration of love was less believable. I also didnt like already that this wager had the potential to ruin a female's reputation and that Gerard and his so called friends would participate in such a thing left a bad taste in my mouth - even if wager stories like this are common and even if Gerard soon regretted it. The wager portion should have been handled with more care. Gerard though, was a good guy and a good hero, worthy of Elizabeth. Gerard also had the makings of a great hero if he were more fleshed out - why did he drink so much? Why did he lead the kind of life he lead? What made him want to change that lifestyle now? I would have love to see his struggle and change throughout the story if it had been more than a day! Everything was too easy here - no real challenge. Also except for some mention of snow and whatnot - this wasnt really christmas-ish but overall I did like it but was left wanting more. Although that last scene on the last page was really sweet.

Great story line. Very believable. Honest writing and not juicy sex scenes, but lovely nights. Fast reading....a delightful read on a languid day.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this regency story. The story and it's characters are well-written, making it an easy read. However, I wish it had been a full length novel. I would enjoy spending more time with these characters and their story. Having said that, though, I think it is a sweet romance, and I hope to read more romances from this author in the future.

    Cute little story, super short.

There is nothing particularly unique about this, but it's a Christmas story, bound to give you a quick smile - and quickly :-).
