The Forgotten Jesus: How Western Christians Should Follow an Eastern Rabbi Paperback – April 4, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
We have lost an essential understanding of Jesus—his Jewishness.
Through the years, our understanding of Jesus has been shaped by different cultural influences, and many Western Christians have formed an inaccurate perspective of Jesus and his teachings, beliefs, and ways of acting.
In Robby Gallaty's deeply reformative book, he reveals the essential Hebraic culture, customs, and nuances many Christians have forgotten or never learned. And he argues that as long as Jesus's Jewish context is misplaced and misunderstood, our understanding of the Bible, our faith, and the church falls far short.
The Forgotten Jesus will open your eyes to:
- The first-century world in which Jesus lived and its connection to the time of the Old Testament.
- The vast differences between the Western and Middle Eastern mind, and how our modern approach to understanding the Bible is influenced far more by the Greeks and Romans than by a Hebrew way of thinking.
- Essential textual connections between the parts of the Bible that we often overlook.
- Important Hebraic perspectives on the Messiah to point out some errors many Christians have believed through the years.
- Why Jesus’s words on the cross about God forsaking him may have deeper meaning than we realize.
By uncovering the teaching of the first- and second-century rabbis and Christian theologians, and highlighting little-known Jewish idioms and traditions, Gallaty takes Christians on a biblical journey to rediscover a forgotten Jesus from a biblical perspective, deepening your relationship with God.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Throughout this book, Robby shows how the New Testament comes alive with a robust understanding of the Old. However, as with Jewish rabbis of old, he isn't satisfied to stop with correct thinking--he pushes us onward to correct living."
J.D. Greear, pastor, The Summit Church
"The message of Jesus may be timeless. But his life, teachings, death, and resurrection were all time-stamped. They took place in the real word at a specific time and place. In The Forgotten Jesus, Robby Gallaty helps us better understand the long-forgotten culture and context of Jesus's life and ministry so that we may better grasp the timeless beauty and power of his gospel."
Larry Osborne, Pastor and Author, North Coast Church
"For many years, First Fruits of Zion has aimed to help Christians to know Jesus better by seeing Him in His Jewish context. Pastor Robby Gallaty is a pastor and Bible teacher who shares that vision. His new book "The Forgotten Jesus" will help Christians to remember the Jewish Jesus that has largely been forgotten. Read this book if you want to know and follow our Master better!"
Boaz Michael - Founder and Director of First Fruits of Zion - Jerusalem, Israel
"Looking for something new? Look to something old! This book is 'gold' with fresh insight to the preacher in teaching God's Word and 'gold' to believers in seeing new understanding into the New Testament by looking to the old - the Old Testament. Don't miss this treasure that God has revealed through Robby Gallaty."
Bryant Wright, Senior pastor of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Marietta, GA
"Robby's passion for Jesus ignites and unites the way he thinks, speaks, and acts. His design in this book is to help you do the same. To my mind, he achieves that goal. Do you crave to love God as Father, the way Jesus did? Read on! And may the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob grant you the desire of your heart."
James Whitman, Director, Center for Judaic-Christian Studies
"I'm delighted to see Robby Gallaty's The Forgotten Jesus and know it will be of great benefit for anyone wanting to understand Jesus' Jewish context. As Gallaty re-situates him in his historical setting, he shows how our Rabbi brought the truth of God's Word to its greatest expression. Readers will be freshly amazed at Jesus' life and ministry when they view it in light of his first-century Jewish reality."
Lois Tverberg, author of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus
"This book will help you understand and appreciate the Jewish-ness of Jesus and the larger biblical narrative. I highly recommend this book!"
Matt Carter, Pastor, Austin Stone Community Church

About the author

Robby Gallaty is the Senior Pastor of Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, TN. He wasn't always a pastor though. For three years, he battled a drug addiction that ravaged his life. A $180 a day heroine and cocaine addiction forced him to steal $15,000 from his parents. After living without gas, electricity, and water for months, losing 8 of his friends to drug related deaths, watching 6 friends arrested, and completing two rehab treatments, Robby remembered the gospel that was shared with him by a friend in college and was radically saved on November 12, 2002.
Eight months later, David Platt, a seminary student and church member at the time, asked Robby to meet weekly for accountability, prayer, and bible study. For the next 2 years, David installed a passion for missions, expository preaching, and disciple-making in his life. He also encouraged Robby to go back to school to pursue theological education.
Robby completed his Masters of Divinity Degree in Expository Preaching in 2007 and his Ph.D. in Preaching in 2011 from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. His dissertation was on "A Critical Examination of the Use of the Biblical Invitation."
In 2008, he began Replicate Ministries to equip and train men and women to be disciples who make disciples. Replicate Ministries offers the Discipleship Blueprint twice a year for leaders to spend three days at Brainerd learning incarnational principles for developing and implementing a disciple-making strategy in their churches. In addition to exposing attendees to a mock-discipleship group, leaders are given a metric for measuring success in their individual groups. The M.A.R.C.S. of a Healthy D-Group are used to gauge effectiveness: Missional, Accountable, Reproducible, Communal, and Scriptural.
Replicate Ministries contains a wealth of disciple-making resources for anyone desiring to grow in their faith. In addition to the multiple articles that are posted weekly, Robby produces mini training videos called Making Disciples in a Minute, Infographics explaining the entire process, and comprehensive training videos, which will comprise the Discipleship University (Spring 2016).
In 2015, Replicate released the F-260 Bible reading plan (A Bible Reading Plan for Busy Believers). The F-260 is a two hundred and sixty day reading plan that highlights the foundational passages of Scripture that every disciple should know.
After failed attempts of reading through the Bible in a year with previous discipleship groups, Robby wanted a manageable plan that believers who never read through the Bible before could complete. Believers are expected to read 1 or 2 chapters a day for 5 days each week, with an allowance for weekends off. The 2 off-days a week are built in so a person may catch up on days where you're unable to read or spend time journaling.
Shortly after becoming the pastor of Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN, he implemented what is now called the Disciplemaking Pathway. This three-fold strategy moves believers through a process for spiritual maturity: the congregation (large gathering), the community (life groups/Sunday school), and core (gender exclusive discipleship groups--D-Groups-- of 3 to 5). He is constantly encouraging his people to take the next step on their spiritual journey. D-Groups have grown from 15 in 2008 to 1100 at the beginning of 2015 (This is in addition to small group attendance).
Robby launched the Growing Up challenge in 2013 in conjunction with the release of his book. Believers from most of the United States and 18 countries worldwide participated in the Challenge.
Robby is the author of Creating An Atmosphere to Hear God Speak (2009), Unashamed: Taking a Radical Stand for Christ (2010), Growing Up: How to Be a Disciple Who Makes Disciples (2013), Firmly Planted: How to Cultivate a Faith Rooted in Christ (2015), Rediscovering Discipleship: Making Jesus' Final Words Our First Work (2015), and Foundations: A 260 Day Reading Plan for Busy Believers.
Robby's wife Kandi is as passionate about discipleship as he is. They are currently raising two disciple-makers named Rig and Ryder.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021Why read this book? Well, I can give many reasons why. One of the main reasons I read the book was because I wanted to have my understanding of Jesus and the Bible stretched. I didn’t want to open a book that would just rehash things I have learned before. I wanted to be challenged to think.
Robby Gallaty’s book, The Forgotten Jesus, challenged me to think, understand and consider who Jesus was as a Rabbi. The book starts with an introduction titled, How Have We Lost the Jewishness of Jesus, and from there the journey to discover Jesus from a Jewish mindset begins. The author is a Baptist pastor. He isn’t Jewish, but the depth of understanding that comes from discovering Jesus from an eastern mindset instead of a western one was thought-provoking and life-changing!
While the book “looks” like it might not have much in it when one considers there are only 9 chapters. Perhaps folks might even be tempted to pass it by. Don’t. Please don’t. I found the insights into the culture, history and original language very eye opening. I know I will not look or read the Scriptures the same way again. As with all authors there are points made, I didn’t necessarily understand or conclusions that I agree with, but the point for me was to broaden my understanding.
As I read, there were many pages I marked so I can go back and consider again what was written or share with friends what I learned. Books are great tools that help us learn, think and grow. I hope that readers will grab a copy and read what the author shares. There were many times in talking with others I would share an insight or a question I thought of as I read. I hope you consider reading this with others and having a conversation.
I am not revealing much about what the author specifically shared because I think that what would be helpful is a reader discovering for themselves what is written. If you approach the book with an open mind and heart, you will come away with a deeper love for God, Jesus, His Word, His people and the world. I will share what the author states on page 204 for you to consider as a reason to read the book and the Bible, “Ultimately, the goal of knowledge is not to fill your head with useless facts, but to instill in you a hunger to read and study God’s Word. In particular, I hope that you begin to see how we cannot truly grasp the message of the New Testament without an understanding of the Old. As the two complement one another and only make sense when they are studied together.” Makes sense doesn’t it? After all the Bible is one book from Genesis to Revelation.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2017I cannot say enough great things about this book. I own all of his books and this one is by far my favorite. The information he presents to the reader is easy to digest and it challenges what you thought you understood about the Old Testament and its relation to the New Testament. I had no idea prior to reading this book that Isaac was not a young boy forced to give himself as a sacrifice, but an adult, who freely did his fathers bidding. That in revelation in itself made this book worth the purchase. Pastor Gallaty's vivid descriptions of traditional Jewish practices that get lost many times in the discussions in Evangelical discussions were very beneficial in allowing me to view things I read from a new perspective.
Each chapter of this book uncovered more information on tradition and ceremonial aspects of Jewish culture than I had ever viewed prior to this. These explanations bring so much of the Scriptures into a whole new light for me. It also made me understand Jesus better and the development of his ministry. Descriptions of cultural reasons things occurred in the timeline in which they did were enlightening.
Perhaps my favorite part of the book was the description of the woman in John 8 and the discussion of why her healing was truly such a big deal. Had I not had a cultural context in which to associate it to, it would not hold the meaning it does now that I have read this book. Chapter 8 was a blessing during this week of Easter as well. "A Colt-Riding, Table-Turning, Tree-Cursing Messiah". Read it first if you buy it before Easter.
This book was wonderful. The illustrations, the history and tradition, the backing of scriptural comparisons, all formed to make a surprisingly easy read. I feel that reading this has made me a better believer, a better small group leader, and a better disciple of Christ.
I highly encourage it. I look forward to buying whatever he puts out next!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2023I have read the exceptional book “Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus” by Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg and this book by Robby Gallaty appeared to be of the same theme. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were referenced in this book.
I have been a Christian for fifty plus years but continue to learn new and exciting things from various authors. Robby Gallaty is one of those people. For instance: I have just assumed that Jesus was a carpenter but it makes more sense that he was actually a stone mason. Will this change my views of Jesus? Not really but it does help to define who Jesus was as a person before his ministry got underway. There are a number of other examples that help to put his life and teachings into perspective.
I read this on my iPad but have purchased paperback copies for friends to read. I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2017I found this book to be very helpful in understanding some of the ancient Jewish culture. Reading through this book has given me a new perspective on some of the Scriptures that I have read multiple times and I will keep it handy to reference back to. This book is a great resource in helping understand the context of the Bible and I highly recommend picking up a copy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024The scripture has come alive by understanding Jesus’s hebraic background. This book delivers on its promises. We are much more able to read and study Gods word in its fullness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really important that those who worship G-d read this book
This book takes you right back to the ORIGINAL Jesus and his day and his obedience to the Torah. It shows how orthodox and very faithful His parents were and many explanations of words in the /Bible. I would recommend it to any serious person of faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful
Good book to help see Jesus in His natural heritage rather than the westernised version we often take for granted. I enjoyed the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
Not bad for the basics. Author could have read some Kenneth Bailey first though.
