This is a 8 port (1 needed for the internet source and 7 other ports to feed your devices) 10/100/1000 speed switch and I purchased the metal finish rather than the plastic. For me the metal enclosure seems more robust and durable especially if you are secreting this little beauty out of the way in your router cupboard or a basement or attic.
I particularly like the "unmanaged" aspect of this switch versus routers that I have used in the past. The routers need initial setup and maintenance and inevitable rebooting. This excellent product just works out of the box. plug in the power, attach your WAN source and connect your LAN device. Done!
Another excellent feature is that any of the ports can be the WAN source. Here's why this is important to me. I have two houses in my grounds and to save cable/internet bills I have a CAT6/Coaxial Supper Cable running between the two. I keep my cable contract on one house until they inevitably put up the price and then I close the account and open a new one on the second house. In my router cupboard I connect my WAN and my “house to house” CAT6 to the switch. When the internet comes from the main house it feeds the CAT6 as just another LAN connection and the second house has internet from the Main House. When I cancel the cable on the main house it works in reverse. Now the WAN is entering the second house and the main house becomes part of the LAN. No cables to mess with, the switch handles it all. Awesome.
My current internet connection tops out at 22 MBPS. (Like most of you I pay for better service but I NEVER reach 30 MBPS that is advertised), I therefore cannot attest to this router actually handling 100MBPS let alone 1000 MBPS. What I can say is that I can stream Netflix on my TV , iPhone and iPad at the same time with no buffering at all. This device definitely does not cause any deterioration in the signal as it beams it all over my two houses.
The price and features of this beauty of a device make it my go to product for internet switching.
Thank you NetGear!
ORIGINAL REVIEW: (Bought this 8 port switch in April last year as I was using a cheapo 5 port D-Link switch at the time and we needed to put 7 devices total on Ethernet. (We have 14 networked devices total so moving a few to Ethernet would definitely help with congestion on WiFi).
It's even more valuable now that I've upgraded to gigabit cable internet, as it manages the bandwidth quite easily and seamlessly and our cable gateway has only 2 ethernet ports, less than the 3 on my previous Apple Airport Extreme router.
Bought the gray metal housing model over the white, as it looked cleaner, was less obtrusive and more professional, but I've had to hide it behind my TV stand as the blinking LED lights tend to be distracting in a dark room. Would've just bought the cheaper white one had I known this would happen. Still, it was inexpensive enough compared to the quality and use I got out of it.
Would definitely buy again though.
Only to nitpick, I didn't notice before I got it that the power connection is on the opposite side from where the ethernet cables plug in. I think it's a cleaner, better design if the power jack is on the same side. I won't dock any stars because this is information I could have obtained had it occurred to me before I got it.
Others have noticed that there's not much in the way of rubber feet on the bottom, so if you want this thing to stay on a flat surface (like a desk or table) you might want to looks elsewhere or just jury rig it, velcro strips would probably do the trick. Not an issue for me as I just put it on the floor.
One issue that doesn't bother me because it's placed in a closed cabinet, but may bother some if it's open and in close proximity to a user, is that the unit does emit a high pitch noise. It's not really loud, but enough to be heard if I'm close to it working on cables inside the cabinet. Just thought I'd note that. I've been very happy with its simplicity, rugged design and performance.

What I like:
✔ - Extremely solid build quality - It’s covered in a metal casing and I’m sure if you dropped it no damage would come to the internal components. But I’d hate to see the damage it would do to a floor.
✔ - Compact size - Considering this is an 8-port switch it is quite compact, and with no downsides.
✔ - Wall mountable - The bottom side features two wall mount points which was a must for me. I will eventually mount this to a wall so if this wasn’t on the port I wasn’t considering buying it.
✔ - Great price - At $27.99 (at time of purchase) it’s pretty much the best option at this price point, and with 550 reviews and a 4.8-star overall rating it speaks for itself.
What I don’t like:
✖ - Absolutely nothing, I have no complaints.
The result:
This is a fantastic product that is well made and works perfectly for my home server. It creates no bottlenecks for my upload/download speeds and I am very happy with this purchase. So, for anyone considering this product I can highly recommend it!
