Editorial Reviews
Review
Impulse Spy especially excels at portraying how Quinn's sideline of mystery investigation eventually changes her own goals in life ("My future awaited, and it was no longer going to include worrying about my hypercritical coworker or trying to blend in with the background."), making for a winning recommendation for any enthusiast of detective stories which also profile personal growth and change."

- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2017I really enjoyed this mystery! I don't usually read in this genre but I saw this book when it was in Kindle Scout. The cover drew me in, and Knox's great story telling kept me reading. While the mystery was intriguing, I felt that the main characters, Quin and Sloan, are what really make the story. As Quin learns how to be a spy, we get to learn right along with her. I also loved that Quin is able to capitalize on her hearing impairment to make herself an even better spy. Talk about turning what some may consider a "disability" into an asset.
Overall, I thought this was a great read and I will definitely pick up another book in this series should Knox write one (and here's to hoping that she does!)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021Quinn had an orderly life until she met the mysterious Sloan McKenzie. After a strange meeting, Quinn finds herself driven by one mysterious adventure after the other. Quinn joins forces with the impulsive Sloan and is soon on the fast track to becoming a sonic sleuth.
Impulse Spy was great! I enjoyed the developing friendship between Quinn and Sloan. It isn't easy to trust people in today's world, so it's nice to watch Quinn place all her faith and trust in Sloan. As for Sloan, she's edgy. She's impulsive, which can also be defined as dangerous. However, Sloan always has Quinn's back. I see a strong friendship forming between two intelligent women that must be based on trust. Knox doesn't reveal everything in Book One. She slowly peels back the layers of her characters allowing you a glimpse of character motivation. It's a slow build and I like it that way. An example: For all Sloan's bravado, we're given a brief look into her painful past –it's probably the defining moment of who Sloan is today. Knox gives the reader just enough to make an emotional connection to Sloan. Most importantly, it's the Info you want the most... so you know you're hooked right there. As for Quinn, she's the narrator, yet, we know very little about her personal life. We know just enough to get involved and not enough to give up. It's like that. The actual investigative mystery develops at a quick pace and it's pretty good. Still, I think the best part of this cozy mystery is going to be Sloan's backstory. You better believe I'll be back for that!
My first cozy mystery of the year gets a big thumbs up.👍
FYI: I also own the Audible version and thoroughly enjoyed both.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2023A sleuth and an unlikely partner made for a fun, easy read. This book was hard to put down. I’m looking forward to reading the next adventure with Sloan and Quinn.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2024It was a slow read and really didn’t keep my attention. The characters were interesting but the story line wasn’t really interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2022I love mysteries and this was a really good one. The characters were diverse and real. The plot was great, changing and surprising frequently. It was a fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022This one kept me reading until the end! It's an interesting story and worth the read. A few typos, is all.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2020Impulse Spy was a fun, clean read; no sex or fowl language littered the pages.
The main characters were relatable, fun to read and were adequately developed.
Sloan is a devious private investigator who tangles a reserved stranger, Quinn, in the mess of an out-of-hand mystery. The story is told from Quinn's perspective as she balances her life as an almost Doctor with her yearning for something more exciting in life...aka sleuthing with Sloan.
The two glas form an unlikely friendship. Their banter mixed with the quick pace of the case they are solving keeps the pages turning.
From a writing critique stand point, the overall work was well done. I only identified 4 grammatical errors, and 1 timeline error (1st set up encounter said 7:00, then the next page said 6:00). There were quite a few side characters who breezed through the story, claiming to know Sloan well, but were not mentioned again, making me wonder if their presence was necessary.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2021Impulse Spy is a fun, modern private-eye story, filled with disguises, secret drops, hidden cameras...and lots of trips to the diner. The two main sleuths are likeable and smart, and I look forward to more of their adventures. This one's a great listen on audio!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
A witty story about 2 strong charactered female PIs, Sloan and Quinn. The author has talent in writing a good story with very well written dialogue. A very well balanced mystery book. I want to read more about Sloan and Quinn.

4.0 out of 5 stars PI / Cosy mystery, quick easy read.
This reads similar to a cosy mystery but it's not set in your usual village with local characters. It's like a private investigator story but told in a cosy mystery way, where an audiologist postgrad student, Quinn, helps out a female PI, Sloan. Quinn first bumps into Sloan in a bookshop and is intrigued by her behaviour; she is soon drawn into the exciting world of investigating. The mystery is a simple one involving an unexplained death, brothers at the head of a company and it even ties in with Quinn's work.
It's a quick easy read although I didn't find it exciting enough for my usual taste. Although not riddled with them, there were a few more typos and editing issues than I usually like to see. Personally I'd rate it 3.5 stars but if you like this genre you'll probably find it a good read so I'm happy to leave 4 stars. As you'd expect for the genre it's a clean read with nothing, or at least nothing that I can remember, in the way of sex, graphic violence or swearing.
