Product Description
828mk3 Hybrid Firewire Audio Interface. As a hybrid audio interface, the 828mk3 provides flexible connectivity to any Mac or PC via FireWire or high-speed USB 2.0, with 10 channels of pristine 192kHz analog recording and playback, combined with sixteen channels of ADAT digital I/O and stereo S/PDIF. Expand your system by connecting additional MOTU audio interfaces or the 8pre mic input expander. Tons of I/O The 828mk3 is equally well-suited for studio and stage, with or without a computer. As an interface or standalone mixer, the 828mk3 provides 28 separate inputs and 30 separate outputs, including dedicated main outs on XLRs and two front panel headphone outs. When recording from the mic/guitar inputs, the 828mk3's signal overload protection gives you an extra 12dB of headroom above zero with no digital clipping or harsh artifacts. Advanced audio analysis tools Analyze and scope your audio with advanced diagnostic tools, including a full-screen realtime FFT display, spectrogram waterfall display, full-featured oscilloscope, X-Y plot, and linear/polar phase analysis graphs. Standalone operation as a mixer After programming the on-board mixing in the studio, unplug the 828mk3 from the computer and take it on the road for operation as a Standalone mixer with effects. So I bought a brand spankin' new MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid Firewire Audio Interface. I haven't bought a NEW interface since that 2408 I got in '97 or so.
This MK3 hybrid works fine with the Firewire, but I find this connection on my old MacBook itself to be suspect. The USB connection, to my amazement and joy, is more secure on both sides AND it loads Audio Setup much faster than the Firewire does. Yay for me again.
All of my CueMix and Audio Setup functionality has returned. Yay again, again. I WAS sad to find that reverb can only be added to live mix outputs at 48Hz and below, but I got over it pretty quickly. I do prefer 96, but you get what you get.
I've gigged out using this 828 twice now and it's worked perfectly both times while recording 5 channels at 24/48 and providing live EQed, compressed and reverbed mixes to a live streaming videogrpher. Each time needing to provide output differently.
Yay for me.
I've had good experiences with MOTU products in the past and based on those I'm replacing this with a 1248. While I'm giving this 3 stars (and was decent in 2008) I can't in good faith recommend this unit in 2020.
Pros
- Great distortion free super clean audio
- Nice patching features
Cons
- The white noise issue (completely unacceptable for an audio device)
- Not super reliable
1. It randomly fails to boot up properly, and doesn't pass audio at all. I used to waste a lot of time whenever this happened trying to figure out which other part of my system wasn't working correctly before I learned the first rule of using this thing: Always assume the Motu is the problem. That rule has never failed me. Turning it off and on again solves the problem, so that's what I do now, just as if I were a character from the IT Crowd.
2. Worse, it sometimes randomly decides to pass ALL the audio, as in full-blast 0dB white noise. This happens whether it's connected to my computer or not, whether it's the clock master or not, whether it's connected to ANYTHING ELSE AT ALL or not. It's entirely the fault of the Motu, it's been a serious problem for years, and it's flat out dangerous. Luckily it's never happened while I was wearing headphones (yet), but who knows what damage has been done to my speakers.
3. After those two problems it seems almost trivial to mention that configuring the thing could stand to be a lot more user-friendly. I can't name the channels so that my DAW will recognize them and allow me to select them based on name - so setting up a new project is always a crapshoot as I toggle different inputs and outputs on and off until I hear what I need (the channels are numbered differently in the computer than they are from the 828's front panel, just so you don't get complacent and start to feel like the interface is starting to make sense).
I have the latest firmware installed (I've checked numerous times, there hasn't been an update in over 5 years). I use a Mac, not Windows, so the problem is not that I have the wrong Firewire chipset or whatever. Unfortunately problems 1 and 2 were intermittent enough and I used it infrequently enough that by the time I realized I had a lemon it was too late to return it. I'll never buy another Motu interface again. Frankly they should be embarrassed to have dropped this defective junk on the marketplace and done nothing to address its problems (there are other users with the same noise problem on the MotuNation forums - but no response from Motu whatsoever). At some point I'll bite the bullet and buy something else so I can get rid of this user-hostile piece of crap (which I won't be able to sell, as I can't in good conscience foist it on some other poor mariner). It's the only audio hardware I own that I don't love - and I hate it.
Also, my 828Mk3 issues random high pitched whines from time to time, not via its outputs but coming from some component inside the unit itself. Rebooting it cures it for a while and MOTU isn't sure what's going on. So I guess I'll have to return it.
I honestly was excited when I got this unit and saw that it was Made in the U.S. Now I sort of wish it was made in China.
