Review
"For two decades now Ed Stetzer has charted the course for a renaissance of church planting in the evangelical world. This updated study reflects not only his years of church planting research and study but his familiarity with the latest developments in the missional conversation. And probably my favorite aspect of the book is that Ed writes not as an observer but as a pastor and practitioner. He has 'skin in the game.' Everything you need to know about where church planting is and where it is going is in these pages!" - J.D. Greear, lead pastor, The Summit Church
"Ed Stetzer's original Planting Missional Churches has proved to be a defining book in its field. In this edition, Ed and Daniel update the material to suit the constantly shifting contexts we find ourselves in. Lashed with significant new learnings since the last edition, this new edition will serve us well for the next ten years as well." - Alan Hirsch, founder, 100Movements and Forge Mission Training Network
"Ed Stetzer's volume on planting missional churches has been perhaps the best single volume on the subject. Now that he has updated it thoroughly, it is even more important to have if you are involved in church planting at any level, or even if you want your local church to be more outwardly focused. I recommend it." - Tim Keller, founding pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church
"Ed has planted churches personally, taught church planting in seminaries, coached and supervised church planters, and even annually convened the leaders of church planting networks and denominations for years. Does anyone know more about church planting than Ed Stetzer? I doubt it. So if you want to save yourself from unnecessary trouble, read this book!" - Rick Warren, senior pastor, Saddleback Church

- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2016The original was great. The second edition is even better. As indicated on newchurches.com, in revisiting the book the authors "ended up changing over 50% of the content". So if you have the original, I still suggest making the upgrade. The new material is definitely worth it. Also, the new format is cleaner, it's easier to navigate, and it's a pleasure to read. B&H did a great job with the second edition of PMC.
Section 1 lays a foundation for church planting and multiplication. In my experience, many people simply don't understand why churches should be planted. On the other hand, there are those who love church planting as an idea but don't understand the Biblical justification for it. This section presents a compelling biblical vision for planting churches. Included in this section are a bunch of stats that that bolster the argument for planting. This is a particular strength of this book. Stetzer has clearly done his homework (Stetzer was the former executive director of Lifeway Research).
Section 2 is called "Models of Church Planting" and wrestles with concepts related to the various philosophies of ministry.
Sections 3 and 4 really dig into the nuts and bolts that are necessary to plant. It includes everything from how to handle finances, to what the church should be named, how to preach, and much more. Potential planters will definitely be helped by consulting these pages.
Section 5 is called "Multiplication and Movements". This section holds a lot of the new material. I was very helped by the chapter "Churches Planting Churches" and believe that the concepts found there should be familiar to all who are in church leadership--even those who aren't interested in planting. Also, I was intrigued by the chapter on denominations and networks. It wasn't quite what I expected but it helped me to think through issues that I had never considered before.
I definitely recommend PMC. If I had to recommend only one book on church planting, this is it. PMC is a one-stop-shop for understanding church planting and crafting a plan to do it. PMC is even-handed in the assessment and recommendation of various strategies, it is written by practitioners, and it is both Biblically and statistically informed. Finally, at newchurches.com there are tons of additional and complementary resources. Buy the book and read it. Hop online and join the newchurches.com community. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2024Planting Missional Churches is a book chock-full of wisdom and practical advice for the church planter. The authors do well not to stick to one idea for church planting. They present a variety of ideas for the church planter to consider when planting a church. However, they put the will of God and guidance of the Holy Spirit front and center. Well worth the read for anyone who wants to plant a church or has already planted a church.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2016I planted a church 4 years ago and the first edition of this book still sits on my desk with lots of notes and highlights in it. I didn't think it could be improved upon, but Ed and Daniel have done it. There's so much solid, up-to-date information that has me rethinking the way we're leading our church now, even though we've moved out of the early stages of the church. The sections on being a church that plants churches and using residencies to build church planters are especially helpful as that's what we're focused on right now. I honestly can't imagine planting a church without reading this book. It's very helpful on nuts and bolts, as well as overall planting philosophy.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021This is a masterpiece in Church planting. Although mainly purposed for people involved in the process of planting a church, it is also a must read for every Church leader, denomination committee, and Christian in general. If you are not in board with multiplying church plants, read this book, it will change your perspective
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2016Ed Stetzer's Planting Missional Churches has been a must read for the planters we support in Texas for some time now. With Daniel Im's help, the book has been updated to address contemporary issues. It is definitely a book mostly for use in the North American context (which includes Mexico). Although it misses out on addressing the "language church planted within the english church" model, and does not deal with the missiological differences between multi-ethnic churches and those seeking to be multi-cultural, it does address just about everything else. And does it well. Regardless the model you are working with, from organic T4T to conventional purpose driven, this book will give you a great go to resource for making sure you are not skipping any steps along the way. Every pastor seeking to multiply his church and every new church starter considering or in the process of starting a new church should have this book on their need to read list.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2016If you are interested or participating in church planting this book is a must read. Ed and Daniel bring some much practical and useful knowledge to the surface for consideration. If you are reading this review and debating the purchase. Do it. If you want a sample of the minds of these two guys go to their website NewChurches.com and listen to the NewChurches.com podcast. They guys have a heart for church multiplication and they are leveraging their knowledge and experience to equip others. Great Book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2018This book is a must read for pastors at any stage. Stetzer and Im do a fantastic job of being informational, practical, and biblical in their approach to church planting. - Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2020I really liked the stories of stories, statistics, and scripture references as well as the practical teaching of Planting Missional Churches. I would recommend this book to any Pastor, potential Church Planter or Seminary Student.

I gave this book a five star rating because of the simplicity, challenging, encouraging but yet insightful approach of the authors. The book is very easy to read and its been very well researched as it takes different contexts and expressions into consideration
I like the use of statistics and figures in the book to illustrate different factors
