About the author
From February 2007 to February 2016, Carl Wolfson was the host of “Carl in the Morning” on AM 620 KPOJ and FM 107.1 KXRY, Portland, Oregon’s progressive talk stations.
Radio was the capstone to Carl’s four decades as a political activist, advocating for social and economic justice, universal healthcare, quality public schools, strong environmental protections, and an enlightened foreign policy.
Prior to his radio career, Carl was one of the country’s top headlining comedians, specializing in current-events humor.
During the 1980s and 1990s, he was a fixture on national television, appearing on Showtime’s Comedy Club Network, VH-1 Stand-Up Spotlight, An Evening at the Improv, and The Joan Rivers Show.
His weekly segments on Thicke of the Night (“The Wolfson Report”) and Fox Network’s Late Show (“Carl’s Camera”) were the most popular features of each show.
He is an avid collector of historical memorabilia; his collection of more than 22,000 political buttons – from 1896 to present – is one of the most impressive in the world.
Carl received his B.S. in Communications from the University of Tennessee and his M.A. in Political Science from UCLA.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2017This book is a must read. It is Laugh-Out-Loud funny. Anyone growing up in a dysfunctional family (and who didn't) will relate to this book. It is written from the perspective of an 11 year old boy who was a keen observer of the world around him. I'm not much of a sports fan but this saga of how the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team blew their chance for the pennant in 1964 is so well written with meticulous detail and such high drama that it will leave anyone on the edge of their seat, biting their nails! Add in all the political intrigue and history of the 1960s and you have a book that almost everyone will enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2018I grew up fifteen minutes from where Carl spent his historic 1964 so I "feel his pain". The curse of Chico Ruiz, stealing home with Frank Robinson at the plate, will always be with me. Enough about me. I loved the humble story of Carl and his extended family. The book is full of intelligent humor and wonderful reminisces from those early sixties. I enjoyed reading the names of long lost heroes like Johnny Callison, Jim Bunning, Chris Short, Dick Allen, Cookie Rojas, Bobby Wine, Rueben Amaro ,Alex Johnson, and Wes Covington. What I had forgotten was that Bobby Shantz, Johnny Klispstein, and even Ed Roebuck were also on that team. Wolfson brings to life those heady days when our long last nightmare seemed destined to be over- only to turn into an unforeseen nightmare. Cleverly and entertainingly Wolfson weaves his family and his youth into the pennant race to give the reader a context for just how significant the pennant race was to the entire family. The epilogue is the clincher and gave me chills. I'm glad the family all seemed to have done well. Great job Carl.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2018This book is very humorous and written in a way that, even though I'm not a sports fan, kept my interest and made me laugh out loud. Carl is a great writer and he's so good with words I always love it when people have such great memories about their childhood and can tell a story that happened years ago as though it just happened yesterday. Read it even if you don't care about baseball!! It reminds me of the story behind the movie "Christmas Story."
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2017If you are a fan of the Algonquin Table (America's finest early 20th century humorists) you will love the way Mr. Wolfson turns a phrase. It is laugh out loud funny! Historically accurate of life in the sixties, it follows the lives of the Wolfson family with humorous affection. The sports detail will leave you in awe, even if you are not a fan. It's that well written.
This would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys comedy, sports, history or politics. That covers a lot of bases!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2018Beautifully written. You don't have to be a baseball fan to love this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2018This book reminds us just how amazing the sixties were, and in particular, 1964. The author seamlessly ties together his first-hand account of living through 1964 as an 11-year old; the rapid fire of major historical events that year; and of course, the historically disastrous demise of the 64' Phillies. The breadth of the author's reach is impressive. There were many times I'd be reading this book alone and suddenly laugh out loud. At other times I'd be so riveted by the re-telling of the baseball season that I'd very briefly convince myself that maybe the Phillies would pull it off (even though I'm a fan of the team that ultimately defeated the Phillies). And at other times, I was deeply touched at the honesty with which the author discusses his complex family dynamic. I suspect most readers will find at least some aspect of the author's loving, but imperfect family instantly relatable. "Slide" is a quick read, and a must-read for any Phillies fan. I did not live to experience the Phillies 64' collapse, but this book got me pretty darn close.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2017I've seen the author do stand-up and heard his radio show so I expected his first book to be quite a ride; I wasn't disappointed. I'm not a particularly avid baseball fan but I understand the intensity and anguish of being devoted to one sports team, winning or losing. Wolfson builds the suspense beautifully ( I had no clue what was going to happen to the Phillies) and sets the scene perfectly, describing life in the Sixties as a kid. His family members, and even the family pets, add so much pathos and humor to the unfolding situation. You don't have to be a baseball fan to love this book. You just need to love books that make you laugh out loud.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2018Funny and easy to read. We previously knew the author as a radio personality and had even lunched with him a few years ago (we bid on lunch with him at a fundraiser auction), but, until we discovered this book, we weren't aware of his comedic background. His stories about his family members are enjoyable whether or not the reader is into sports.
