Editorial Reviews
2017 release. Beth Hart is on fire. Right now, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt-honey voice. In 2016, the headline news is Fire On The Floor: a release that even this fiercely self-critical artist describes as "pretty frickin' good". Fire On The Floor is sure to build on her breakneck momentum. As the singer explains, this latest record gave her an emotional release following the bitter-sweet sessions for Better Than Home. If there's a theme that ties these 12 songs together, it's a sense of escapism following the hardest of times. "We were still in the mixing stages for that album and I knew I had to make another record. Making Better Than Home was so painful, because one of the producers, Michael Stevens, was dying of cancer. It was a very emotional record to write and to make. I wanted the songs for Fire On The Floor to get born real quick."

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2017In my review of her album “Better Than Home”, I compared Beth Hart to another great Blues vocalist, Janis Joplin. Her new album. “Fire On The Floor” is a true masterpiece of Blues genre. This album has a variety of songs that will engage the hardest of Blues fans, as well as those who listen occasionally.
Her voice amazes me. She seems as comfortable singing strong blues songs with a rasp so coarse she could shave an oak tree “Love Is A Lie”,”Fire On The Floor” , or soft ballads like “Coca Cola”, “No Place Like Home” and “Woman You’ve Been Dreaming Of” in a strong but sweet voice.
Track Notes:
Start with the first song on the album, “Jazz Man”. It’s one of my favorites on the album, if only for its listenability. It’s a stylish number that recreates a song from a 50”s or 40’s era Jazz/Blues club. Every time I listen to it, I envision a very stylish music video that could be made for it. Anytime Beth Hart wants to hear me out on this, I’m available.
“Let’s get Together” reminds me of a 60’s soul song. I just can’t remember the singer or group. I’d love to hear from somebody who knows the group or singer I’m reminded of on this song.
“No Place Like Home” - Beth in a video tweet says it’s her favorite song on the album. Mine too. If only because I like Beth doing waltz music.(“As Long As I Have A Song’} She’s quite good and I’d like to hear more. Her song expresses a simple sentiment which is articulated by her poetry:
“I'm gonna move out of the street
Stack some stones maybe grow some wheat
Build a fire for a little heat
Have someone curl up at my feet”
“Fire On the Floor” – the title track on the album is a strong and sultry blues number. You had best chase the Tweens out of the house when you play this song:
“So tonight I'm gonna stay
And play with his fire
On the floor
Wanna play with his fire
On the floor child, child”
“Woman You’ve been Dreaming Of” - is a song about marital infidelity. Change the arrangement and it becomes an easy Top 40 on the Country Charts. Are you listening Nashville ?
“You've been talking in your sleep
Every secret that you keep
And I know you got a woman you've been dreaming of
Every second of the night
I've been holding on so tight
Cause I know I'm not the woman you've been dreaming of”
Bonus track: “You Belong To Me” is an old favorite from an earlier album featuring Joe Bonamassa. This new version features Jeff Beck, a legendary guitarist from the 60’s and 70’s.
I thoroughly enjoy this album and look forward to future albums by this artist.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2017Hart, who has somehow remained criminally under-appreciated (at least, for a large part, here in her home country) for the better part of the last 25 years, has followed the superb "Better Than Home" album with this, her 8th (solo) studio release. I'll let others give you their opinions regarding the individual songs, the primary purpose of this review, like all I opine about, being to rate the overall sonics of the compact disc format. I am a big fan of vinyl (and CD, too, when done right) in general, but the production, recording, and mix on the CD version here is truly outstanding. Each instrument is clearly & cleanly spread across the soundstage with Hart's incredible voice anchored firmly in the center. Bass is deep and tight, drums/cymbals are lifelike and clear, and the guitars are generally panned to the left/right speakers with piano, organ, and percussion filling in the spaces between. I know the compact disc is supposed to be a "dying" format, but this is one of the best-sounding CD's out there. Compression is kept to a minimum, and the sound is fluid, warm, and remarkably organic for the digital format. In short, this remarkable album shows just how good the CD format can actually sound in 2017. As a side note, the included 7-page booklet is beautifully rendered with lyrics and photos. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2017First of all this is simply an incredible album if you're a blues/soul singer fan. My 2 favorite singers in this genre are Beth Hart and Joss Stone and I really can't decide which I like most. Things seem to have come easily for Joss Stone as she's been a star since her first album which was multi platinum in 2003 when she was 16 years old. Beth has every bit the vocal talent as Joss and maybe more. But she sabotaged herself with her lifestyle very early in her career. I've seen Beth perform and she pours every bit of her blood, sweat and tears into every word she sings and that presence along with her amazing voice makes her stunningly raw and real. This album Is Beth at her best. She writes her own songs and you can feel her every emotion in this album. If you don't feel anything when you listen to "Tell her you belong to me" then you don't have a heartbeat This is a must have CD because it's beyond great.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2017I first heard Beth Hart on WMSE (Milwaukee School of Engineering public radio - 91.7 FM or WMSE.org) during one of the blues programs that are on during the 5:00 pm rush hour. I thought it was an Etta James song I hadn't heard before. Then I learned it was Beth Hart. One of the reviews I read later on YouTube likened her to Janis Joplin (who I listened to every single morning before going to high school and played every single day when I got home). I would love to hear Beth's rendition of some of Janis' songs. This album, Fire On The Floor, is more varied than I expected, and ranges almost into pop on a couple songs. Her range, both vocally and in terms of songs, is amazing. I'm looking forward to adding more of her albums to my collection. I wish I'd heard of her sooner. She is definitely a "member" of the family of great female blues singers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Déçue
