- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021OMG! This series keeps getting better and better with each book we read. My son (11) and I just finished this 4th book, and we ADORED it! My son rated it a thousand stars. 😍😍 We agree it is the best of the series, but we said the same thing about book 3. 😳😳 So far, each of the books has been a complete story with a final ending, but this 4th book ends on a cliffhanger that continues in book 5, which is the last book of the series. We've been babying these last two books trying to prolong the time before we must say goodbye to Gregor and his friends. 😭😭 Ms. Collins is such a gifted author. I'm surprised this series isn't more well known, especially when you consider the popularity of her Hunger Game series.
Our favorite characters are all here; Gregor the MC, his sister Boots, Princess Luxa, and Hazard, Luxa's cousin, whom we met in book 3. Of course, my all-time favorite, Ripred, is prominently featured. As with all the other books, the story in book 4 is exceptionally well-written, action-packed, and riveting. The author has a talent for ending every chapter on a cliffhanger that compels you to keep reading to find out what happens next. My son has had many a late-night since we've been reading this book because we just couldn't put it down!
If you have a middle-grade reader (8-12), this is a series they should not miss, especially if they enjoy fantasy. This series is simply amazing. I love it, and I've even recommended it to my 14-year-old daughter. Happy reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2006Another excellent entry in the superb Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins, _Gregor and the Marks of Secret_ is a book for fans of YA fantasy who don't mind some serious business. Mixed in amongst the talking, giant cockroaches and noble bats are the horrors of war and atrocities that echo the Holocaust. Collins does not dumb her books down. Though the writing is age-appropriate, she asks her readers to consider along with her hero the nature of war. Can it be just? Is there ever an innocent side? The characters who travel with Gregor suggest that individuals transcend national identity, but the concept of "nation" is presented here as powerful and not necessarily bad. If this material sounds heavy, that's because it is. It may be too intense for some younger readers. Characters die, and in horrible ways. But Collins doesn't seem to mean horrify; she just wants us to care, and we do. If the dying were sanitized or only threatened unimportant figures in her books, they wouldn't be honest, and Collins wouldn't have that. These might be fantasy novels, but they are firmly grounded in ethical reality. The children who read Gregor will be learning something about the nature of a hero that few other YA novels can teach.
This is not a good starting point in the series. I heartily recommend that interested readers begin with _Gregor the Overlander_ and proceed from there. The tapestry that Collins has been weaving from the start of this series has too many interesting details to miss.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2012I really never saw myself reading books for ages "9 and up," but a friend recommended the series and I became hooked. The first book had me hesitant, I'm not usually a big fan of child narrators, but Collins proved me wrong. The other problem I usually have with younger age books is that they are too simplistic. Once again, Collins proves me wrong. The writing is simplistic enough to be believable for a 12yr old's point of view, but the plot itself is unpredictable and full of really good twists and keeps you thinking.
The action pieces are also something I did not expect, as I thought they would be downplayed for a younger age. Instead, they are well written and demonstrate the brutalities of battle (even if the ones fighting are not human) and although not the most gruesome scenes I've read (I read horror genre too). I was surprised that the level of brutality was recommended for ages as young as nine, but as an older reader I found it refreshing to not have fights and battles sugar coated.
The characters are engaging and the whole Underland world is complete and intriguing with the many 'peoples' that live there and the differences all the groups have. I cannot recommend how a reader of say age nine would like this series, but I can say that as a 22yr old, if you don't mind reading something a 'the lower level,' I defiantly recommend it for many ages over 9.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2007Suzanne Collins has not lost her touch. Gregor and Luxa's story continues as it has in the other books with suspense, adventure and a great storyline. I still love the characters, and there are always new things in the Underland.
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five, is because she leaves you right in the air at the end. For the most part the other books in the series wrapped up the main conflict and just left a small opening for a sequel. I loved that about them. This book leaves you right in the middle of everything, and it was very frustrating. I know a lot of publishers like that because it makes you want to go out and buy another book. I was planning to get the 5th book anyway because I love them all, but I live in a small town, and have to order those kinds of things online or drive a long way to get them. It was very frustrating to be dropped in the middle of a story, and that I will have to wait to see what will happen. I do recommend this book, but only if you already have the 5th one waiting to be read when you are done. Otherwise, wait until you have both of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series
A great series that on paper you might think wouldn’t work. All the animals / insects that people usually fear/ are averse to are shown in a new light ( Think friendly , loving cockroaches and the loyal bats ) this series follows one boy who thinks himself unimportant, living a sometimes difficult life. As the series develops we see the main character grow in confidence, find and fulfil prophecies ,which are life changing , and ends with his finding himself. A reminder that family comes in all shapes and sizes and that we are defined by our choices in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Underland Chronicles 4
Comme avec les trois premier livres, j'adore cette histoire fanstastique, et j'espere que la fin ne me decevra pas. Je crois que l'auteur
devrait trouver un metteur en scene pour faire un film genre Harry Potter!

4.0 out of 5 stars bellissimo

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Hunger Games
Read the Hunger Games series first & bought this to read more by the same author. To my surprise & pleasingly found this series much better, more inventive and really wanted to see where the series sent. Well worth reading the series in order.
