The Writing Desk Paperback – July 11, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
This happily ever after romance tells the captivating story of two women bound together across time by a shared dream and a mysterious writing desk.
Tenley Roth’s first book was a runaway bestseller. Now that her second book is due, she’s locked in fear. Can she repeat her earlier success or is she a fraud who has run out of inspiration?
With pressure mounting from her publisher, Tenley is weighted with writer’s block. But when her estranged mother calls asking Tenley to help her through chemotherapy, she packs up for Florida where she meets handsome furniture designer Jonas Sullivan and discovers the story her heart’s been missing.
A century earlier, another woman wrote at the same desk with hopes and fears of her own. Born during the Gilded Age, Birdie Shehorn is the daughter of the old money Knickerbockers. Under the strict control of her mother, her every move is decided ahead of time, even whom she’ll marry. But Birdie has dreams she doesn’t know how to realize. She wants to tell stories, write novels, make an impact on the world. When she discovers her mother has taken extreme measures to manipulate her future, she must choose between submission and security or forging a brand new way all on her own.
Tenley and Birdie are from two very different worlds, but fate has bound them together in a way time cannot erase.
“Rachel Hauck enchants us again! Tenley and Birdie are bound together by the understanding that creativity is a guiding force and that their stories must be told. A tale both bittersweet and redemptive, The Writing Desk is your must-read.” —Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author

This is Rachel Hauck's best book ever. Could not have loved it more. Perfection! -- Tracey, Goodreads Review
Rachel Hauck has done it again, taken an inanimate object and used it to explore our feelings. In this book she uses the writing desk and takes us from past to present as the main characters, who are authors, deal with what is going on in their lives---love, forgiveness, grief. -- Naomi, Goodreads Review

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2017I was drawn to The Writing Desk because of it's beautiful ethereal cover. It made me want to open the pages of the book and find out what was being written at the desk and by who. Rachel Hauck took me on a fantastic journey that transported me to two different time periods. Both stories by themselves were fascinating reads, but intertwined together as they were only multiplied my enjoyment of her exceptional storytelling.
The modern day story has successful author, Tenley Roth, experiencing writer's block and considering if she'll be a "one hit wonder". Tenley finds the perfect writing desk on a trip to Florida to help her mother, Blanche. But the desk won't be the perfect place to write for long as it's been sold. When the desk's new owner comes to claim it, she meets Jonas Sullivan and rounds of hilarious banter begin. She calls him Cocoa Beach, he calls her New York. Tenley's quirky behavior and quick-witted one-liners had me laughing so much I had to stop and highlight them so I could go back and reread them later. Tenley and Jonas have terrific palpable chemistry together. There is, however a serious side to this story. Issues of rejection, abandonment, wrong choices and forgiveness are just a few of the things Tenley and Jonas struggle with. I love that Tenley wasn't portrayed as being perfect. She makes mistakes, but she's still a likeable character. Jonas' past wounds keep him closed off from future relationships until God breaks through, I loved that too. Excellent believable character portrayal of both.
The early 1900's story has Birdie Shehorn's life planned out for her and her having little say about it, as was the social norm of the day. Birdie wants, first and foremost, to be a writer, spending her time writing away in her attic hideaway. Her mother puts a stop to that and insists she marry. Birdie gives little importance to her obligation to marry well and doesn't want to marry unless it's for love. She meets the titled Elijah Percy in England and then again later in America when he comes to claim a bride, prearranged for him while he was away at war. A bride of wealth to rescue his failing ancestral home in exchange for a title. Birdie and Eli's story is so charming, full of unrequited love and battles against family duties that took precedent over anything else, including happiness.
The stories of these two couples are woven masterfully together because of the writing desk. Even though their stories are more than a hundred years apart, the historical background and the events that later take place tie them together with a common thread, making for a stunning page-turner!
The Writing Desk has everything to offer. It's romantic, it's historical, it has mystery and suspense, and it's funny! All the elements that make this story so wonderful came together perfectly. Rachel Hauck has written her BEST BOOK EVER! I couldn't have loved this story more! Perfection! I was thinking about it long after I finished it. I predict The Writing Desk will be at the top of everyone's Best Books of 2017 list! Thomas Nelson has published one fantastic story and I appreciate them making a copy of The Writing Desk available for review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2025Looks like a good story. Have not read it yet!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2017I loved the idea of a writing desk being the center of a story that tell about two very different women. I must say the description of the desk was exquisite. I though about Birdie long ago writing at that desk dreaming of a best seller. She was a wonderful character who I really liked. Her family of course had other ideas for Birdie. Only the best suitor would do and he must be of the utmost of high society. It was such a hardship for Birdie to always have to do what her mother wanted. Birdie's mother is overbearing at times and I didn't care for her much. At times I wanted to scream at Birdie and say" Girl you are a grown woman. You are a gifted writer. Do what God has planned for you and let God deal with your mother." Will Birdie follow her dream or allow her mother to suffocate it?
Tenley was a very interesting character. She has just written a book that is sweeping across the U. S. Everyone loves her and now her publisher is ready for her next best seller. There is a slight problem when Tenley just can't find the words to start her book. A phone call changes her plans as her mother as asked her to come to take care of her. There is a lot of hurt that Tenley must face . Tenley's mom is very ill and maybe this will be a time for mother and daughter to rekindle their relationship. Can Tenley let go of the past and forgive her mom? I did find it funny that Tenley's choice of clothing was a raggedy old bathrobe and slippers. It kind of reminded me of the show The Odd Couple. One of the characters was sloppy and just went with the flow.
The Writing Desk goes back in forth in time as Tenley and Birdie each find the desk comforting and inspiring. There is a bit of romance in the book that is sweet and very lovely as the author slowly has each woman learning to trust a man. The key to the story for me is to to be yourself, trust God and never let go of your dreams. The history of Birdie and Tenley's family is well written and brings the story full circle. Does a writing desk hold the key to a great novel? Can it help two women believe in themselves and allow God to direct their path? It's a beautifully written story that follows two women as they face failure, happiness, love, forgiveness and God's love.
I received a copy of this book from The Fiction Guild. The review is my own opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great one from Rachel Hauck
I have read another of her books and enjoyed it as much as this one. Rachel has a unique way of weaving stories from different eras and offering insights through a great ability to develop characters that one can relate to. This one was a real page-turner as it kept flipping back and forth from the different eras, featuring a writer from each one and explaining the trials and tribulations of each of them. There was also some romance thrown in and well as some interesting family dynamics. I enjoy her writing style very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it in a weekend!
Loved the writing desk. I pre-ordered earlier this year and couldn't wait for release date. It did not disappoint. I am a fan of Rachel's writing and if you loved any of the "wedding" books, The Writing Desk will be up your alley. I loved reading about the gilded age in New York. A beautiful story, the only problem is I have to wait a year for her next release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Writer's block and new beginnings
This story captured my interest. I do not usually like or read historical romances but the characters in this story drew me in. The author expertly tied the stories of Birdie in the Victorian era with the contemporary Tenrey using the writing desk. I highly recommend this inspirational novel.
