My name is Marilyn Rollins. I live in Hebron, Indiana, a small town about 50 miles SE of Chicago. I was ask to become part of this anthology series on grief, as the result of my son and granddaughter's deaths in an automobile accident in 2006. What better experts on grief could there be than those who have walked that road, only to emerge on the other side realizing that life does go on, has, in fact, gone on? I have looked out at this world many times over the last nine years and wondered how it does go on. My son and granddaughter are dead, how could this world keep turning? But it does, so we who have suffered the unimaginable grief of losing a child, keep moving forward, whether we want to or not. I only wish that I had had this book in those very early days of my grief. I would have realized that I was not alone and I was not crazy and my thoughts and feelings were very normal. I would have clung to it, for it gives hope that we can emerge from the darkness and live again.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2016While I have never lost a child myself, I have friends that have, from infants to teens/young adults to adults. This book is amazing. It is written in segments of grief, not just one person or family's journey through grief. From the moments before the news of the death of a child, "The Beginning" to "The Darkness" living life without the child, to each family's "Silver Lining".
20 families are represented in this book, the author Lynda Cheldelin Fell does a remarkable job of introducing each topic. The courage of each family represented to share their journey is incredible.
I will be purchasing several copies to donate to my church's Counciling Center as well as Children's Ministry.Grief Diaries: Loss of a Child
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2016When the death of a child opens us up to the most devastating experience we could ever live with, we must seek out help, answers, courage, hope, and inspiration from others. The excruciating pain is too insistent to not look for more. Grief Diaries: Loss of a Child is that much needed book. Learning we are not alone on this journey is so significant to finding balance and meaning in our lives. Chapter by chapter, as each mother shares her journey, wherever she is on that journey, she is helping another. Twenty mothers contributed to this profound book to provide greater insight for the grieving. Unconditional love, confusion, purpose, compassion, and honesty run through these pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2017I am so glad this book is out there. I stand in admiration for all who bared their souls, sharing glimpses from their deepest pain. This is a much needed book that provides guidance and comfort to other parents who have lost a child. Knowing you are not alone and connecting with others along the journey can make all the difference. Recommend this as a must read for anyone facing the loss of a child at any age.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2016Interesting read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2016Interesting read
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2022This is not much of a book. Just a list of children who died under different circumstances - in a car crash, from a disease, overdose, etc. It offers northing.
I also bought a book by Joan Didion "The year of magical thinking". She lost her husband, I lost my child, but I can completely relate to how she was grieving, to her irrational thoughts and actions following the death of someone she loved. It was comforting to know that I am not along and I am not crazy. Grief Diaries has no thoughts or feelings. Just a cold list of facts that don't help in any way.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2019I lost my child 5 months ago it took me that long to read it but I can say that it has eased my heart
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2016Has someone you know lost a child? Do you wish there was something you could say or do to help them but just don't know what? Be there for them. Not just in the first hours and days. But a month later, six months. Show up. Sit in silence or speak of their child-whatever they need to do in that moment. When you leave place a copy of this book on their table. Knowing that others have been on the journey they are now on will be helpful to them at some point. This book is filled with stories of parents who have suffered the loss of a child of various ages and causes. It is filled with painful memories but it is also filled with hope and I believe will be a gentle hug from you once you leave their home.
