In 1917, Evelyn Marche is just one of many women who has been widowed by the war. A British nurse trapped in German-occupied Brussels, she spends her days working at a hospital and her nights as a waitress in her aunt and uncle's café. Eve also has a carefully guarded secret keeping her in constant danger: She's a spy working for a Belgian resistance group in league with the British Secret Service.
When a British plane crashes in Brussels Park, Eve is the first to reach the downed plane and is shocked to discover she recognizes the badly injured pilot. British RFC Captain Simon Forrester is now a prisoner of war, and Eve knows he could be shot as a spy at any time. She risks her own life to hide him from the Germans, but as the danger mounts and the secrets between them grow, their chance of survival looks grim. And even if they do make it out alive, the truth of what lies between them may be more than any love can overcome.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017This novel has all the appeal of –and promise to be– a classic in its genre: a vivid sense of place; plot elements inspired by real life events and people; relatable and complex characters; a romance that surprises and leaves you breathless with its strength; and, secrets, danger, and espionage (oh my!).
Drawing on the logistical complexities and melting pot of nationalities involved in The Great War, the suspenseful storyline keeps a steady pace with twists and makes the reader question just who to trust or believe. I have a new respect for Red Cross personnel who worked behind enemy lines, and citizens who risked so much while participating in underground communcations networks like La Dame Blanche. The espionage storyline alone had me nervous for Eve, Simon, and several other people who worked with them!
Side note: a few flashbacks take place closer to the beginning of the story and serve as the perfect tool to establish Eve and Simon’s personalities with a sense of normalcy (before the war changed so much). And, they also shed light on the relationship dynamic between the two of them. 🙂
Ok, now to talk about my favorite part of High as the Heavens: the romantic tension!!!! To say all I want to would give away an early surprise or two, so I’ll just have to tell you that Eve and Simon have a history. A close one. His literal crash back into her life is way more complicated than the synopsis hints. Because of this, they are both challenged with trust and the secrets they each harbor. This further complicates the way they must prioritize loyalties to family and country, but especially to each other. In their frustrating circumstance, the strength of the romance between the two of them is delightfully uncovered and shines a light on an overarching theme of hope. And oh, how their soul-deep connection is beautifully penned by Kate! I especially appreciated how Simon’s role embodied the characteristics of love — its patience, mercy, and edurance.
If you are a fan of history, WWI, romance, or even suspense, I say you should read this novel ASAP! Even if historical fiction is not your normal genre. If you want a second opinion, check out my author friend Rachel McMillan’s gushing review that convinced me to pick it up in the first place ;).
Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for the complimentary review copy of this novel. This is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024I really enjoyed this book. It's my first by this author, and I plan to read more! I recommend this. Great characters, clean and compelling.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2019There was a lot to this story. You saw what it took to fight this war, both from the inside and those on the outside. I was in tears from the ache that was palpable, when Eve had to defend herself and the end result. You could feel the longing of a husband and wife who had to be separated by this terrible war. Will they see each other again? Will this war ever end for them? Anyone who enjoys WWI/WWII storylines, you'll enjoy this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2017Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. Kate Breslin now has 3 published historical fiction books, and this was one of the best! I truly enjoyed reading the well written High as the Heavens. It takes place during WW1 in Belgium. Kate has certainly done her research. I learned history while savoring the plot and story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read along with perhaps discovering some historical facts they were unaware of, as I did. The other reviews go into the story-line, so I will refrain. Just go buy the book and enjoy a great read!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2017This story is just another example of why this author is one of my favorite authors. I ordered this book as soon as it was available and started it immediately. I would certainly give it more than 5 stars if I could. Kate has certainly done her research, and this story pulls the reader into the reality of the life of a Belgian nurse during WWI who is working undercover for the Belgian underground. It is the perfect combination of history, intriguing characters, intrigue and romance that I couldn't put down after I started it. I absolutely loved it and it, and it is one, along with the other books from this author, that I definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2017Riveting from the get go! I was captivated by the characters in the book, along with the clear & concise writing. It was hard to put down. Kate Breslin did her research for WWI and she gave humanity to such horrid events.
The sweet romance, the hatred and sadness felt in such atrocities, and bravery were deep emotions I went through with the characters. Evelyn and Simon had a believable and alluring love story. Plot twists and betrayal had me turning the page to find out what happens next. Excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2018I enjoyed Kate Breslin's first two novels and her third novel proved to be just as fascinating. High as the Heavens takes the reader to German-occupied Belgium during WWI. Eve is a courageous Allied nurse who has found herself in very challenging circumstances that will tug at the reader’s heart. The story is full of intrigue, danger, suspense, and romance. I was continually impressed by the amount of research the author did to craft such an interesting story. My hopes that Kate Breslin would explain how she went about this were realized at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2017Having loved this author's first two books (For Such A Time will remain one of my all time favorites), I eagerly looked forward to this book. Unfortunately, it just never got off the ground. The first chapter was awful - tried to cram in too much information quickly in order to get to the punchline. It felt lazy to talk about past happenings rather than showing them happening. Although the writing got better, I never connected with Eve and never felt the romance. Perhaps it was all the jumping around and flashbacks. There was no continuity to allow things to build. At about three quarters of the way through, I jumped to the end to read the outcome and let it go at that. A lot of work obviously went into this book, and the storyline had a lot of potential. Too bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is better than watching a movie
This book is just so incredible. A Page turner from beginning to end. I had to take a break just reading it because of the suspense. It is better than watching a movie. Usually I would turn the volume off when it gets too scary, but with this book I just had to take a break to catch my breath with all the intrigue. So well done. A bonus, there is a storyline of looking for peace in God. Just marvellous

5.0 out of 5 stars A World War 1 Action Packed Christian Novel
The story of Eve, a spy in occupied Belgium and France, and her Scottish military husband Simon. In addition to drama, romance and suspense, the reader gains an appreciation of hardships faced by civilians under German occupation in WW 1.
