From the Back Cover

For decades our culture has tried to blur the lines between men and women, to make gender irrelevant, all in the name of equality. It’s a message that has slowly infiltrated our marriages, our homes, and even our churches. Yet instead of creating harmony, this message has only caused confusion, ultimately leading to a tragic breakdown of relationships and families.

Divine Design calls us back to God’s original intent for men and women. Clearing away the cultural noise and misconceptions, author John MacArthur tackles big issues such as authority in marriage, mothers in the home, and God’s view of equality, all while exploring the innate differences between men and women. Throughout, Divine Design provides an indispensable guide for understanding your mate, and shares how embracing your unique design can foster security, balance, and love in a marriage and family.

Includes a guide for both personal and group study and features discovery questions, suggestions for prayer, and activities, all designed to connect life-changing truths with everyday living.

This book is one for the ages, meaning it could have been relevant in Biblical times and is definitely still relevant today. It will open your eyes to God's divine design for men and women and the church. It saddens me to realize how far we've strayed, but there is hope that many of us who read this book and the Bible will return our lives to God's divine design.

I haven't had a chance to listen to all of this yet, but from what I've heard (I have the audio CD version) this is more or less an essay on doctrine and culture rather than a "christian living" type of self-help/advice book. This isn't a couple's ministry book -- which is initially why I bought it. I am nearly done reading McArthur's "What the Bible says about Parenting." That book is a completely practical guide for parents by comparison. I rather expected this book would be similar on the topic of marriage but it's rather more of a doctrinal commentary on the scripture and sociology. For sure, the content will be good to know, but it's more academic than practical.

Good book to read with an open mind. John MacAuthor goes into great detail to break down the God ordained roles for Men and Women.

When it seems that you are a failure and unimportant in this world, the author reminds you that to God you have a purpose and a vital worth in the world. That our Father wants us to know of His love for us and His continuing care for us regardless of the seeming importance the world places on us.

This is the best book I’ve ever read that clearly brings out the roles of men and women in the church. Highly recommend this book to every church member.

I gave the book five stars because this book tells us how God wanted us to live. Even though we didn't doesn't mean we still can't for those like myself who want to live the life God designed us to live. This book will help you out tremendously .

Meh
The chapter on singleness made it sound like having a spouse gets in the way of serving the Lord -- rather than focusing on the unique ministry of singles (especially in a world that regards chastity as inhumane), the author focused on the negatives of marriage. But I watch my momma make every word, thought, gesture, and feeling captive to the obedience of Christ, while I struggle to work for God and not for man as a single person (before I was ever in a relationship).
Also, instead of the negatives of feminism, how are the beauties of God's design so blinding so as to show how ugly feminism has been from the beginning? Pointing upwards would make better evangelism.
The first half was helpful. The section on the Proverbs 31 woman was exhausting. How do I become this woman? Mere sleep deprivation won't make me like her. His exegesis on deaconesses was interesting.
CS Lewis' That Hideous Strength, Keller's The Meaning of Marriage, and Gary Thomas' Sacred Marriage make a far more convincing case for the beauty of God's design for men and women.

Enjoyed this study. It was very scripture based as it should be and very little self interpretation. Great for mixed group or individual study. This doesn’t just talk about women but about both women and men’s role inside and outside the church.
