The New York Times best-selling author Philip Athans started writing stories the second he became literate, and an early love of movies and TV sent him to film school. He continued to write in college and even played in a punk rock band before he discovered that being a good writer and being a good musician don’t necessarily go hand in hand. His degree in Cinema & Photography landed him in a string of music retail positions where he worked long hours for low pay, but got a lot of free CDs and tickets to concerts, and met some interesting people. But that was just the beginning of a career that has spanned all three stages of the entertainment industry: selling other people’s work, helping refine and develop other people’s work, and putting work of his own out there.

Before he even sold a short story, he started publishing his own magazine: Alternative Fiction & Poetry, which in its short, five-issue life span went from complete obscurity to semi-obscurity. Still, there’s never been a better crash course in running a creative business than just diving in and doing it yourself.

While still selling records he set out to turn a hobby (role-playing games) into a career. A number of freelance assignments ended up getting him his first paying job in publishing. He sent a proposal for a freelance project to TSR, Inc. (the creators of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS®) and the vice president of the games division was so impressed by the proposal and his resume that he passed it on to the executive editor of the publishing division, who was looking for a new editor. Phil apparently said the right things in the interview and in 1995 he became the newest editor for TSR Books, one of the premiere publishers of fantasy fiction in the world. His editing job moved to Seattle two years later when TSR merged with Wizards of the Coast, and Phil moved with it, finding a new home and a string of successes in the Pacific Northwest.

The best thing about that job was the intense, hands-on development of complex intellectual properties that went way beyond traditional genre publishing. His skills in that regard are exemplified in the great leaps forward that the FORGOTTEN REALMS® novel line made under his care. Phil has been working with established authors like R.A. Salvatore (whose FORGOTTEN REALMS novel The Pirate King, broke the top three on the New York Times hardcover fiction best seller list), but he’s also had the enviable opportunity of discovering new talent and starting some outstanding young authors on successful careers. He left Wizards of the Coast in June 2010, a little bloody, but not beaten.

Somewhere in all of that he got married to a very patient woman and had a couple of great kids. He continues to be a full blown media junky: a Comcast Digital Platinum subscriber, and collector of vintage Ace Science Fiction Doubles, with a huge library of books, comic books, video games, board games, roleplaying games, and DVDs.

I really enjoyed this book because unlike Orson Scott Card's book, it leans more towards fantasy development than science fiction, and goes more in depth.

Although I’ve written and published mystery novels, working on my first urban fantasy feels like starting over in some ways. The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction made me rethink certain strategies and consider things I hadn’t thought of. Above all, this book reminded me of the importance of plausibility, continuity, and great storytelling in speculative fiction.

This book is especially helpful for beginners as it provides useful definitions of some of the subgenres in fantasy and science fiction. I especially liked the chapter on composing log lines (a single-sentence description of a book) and giving serious thought to what one’s novel is really about. Other topics include the importance of having something to say and on plot development. There are general writing tips like using all five senses and point of view. As the author states, though, more detailed how-to writing tips can be found in other books.

There are great insights on world building in this book, but not enough information on developing an urban fantasy novel. Merging real places and events in a contemporary setting while incorporating magical or supernatural components can be tricky, and specific pointers would have been welcome. Still, as mentioned, this book is a great beginners guide. Also the short story by R.A. Salvatore at the end of the book is fantastic.

The other, I would say 'authoritative' guideline is Orson Scott Card's; however, Card's is advice on somewhat classic SF&F. This book has a much more contemporary approach and is more applicable to today's readers and multitudes of SF&F sub-genres.

RA Salvatore is one of my favorite fantasy authors, though he plays a smaller role in this book when it comes to the "How To's" or writing fantasy. With that being said, it is a great starting point for those that are looking for best practices.

Very thorough and enjoyable read. Even if the stats are now out of date. Highly recommended for anyone interested in world building.

I rather enjoyed this guide. I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. There are great examples and descriptions that helps me understand what they are talking about. It inspired me to continue writing my fantasy novel and helped me get an idea on structure. It's very informative and definitely recommend.

“When you’re developing your characters, it’s important to know whom they go home to every night—or whom they hope someday to go home to, or whom they used to go home to but can’t anymore.” - Chapter 27.

As a fantasy writer, I greatly enjoyed this book. The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction opens up with a segment on genres and the importance of defining your audience. It then moves on to cover the six major elements of a novel such as plot, character, theme, etc., with insights from well-known writers like Terry Brooks and R. A. Salvatore. Some chapters contain thought-provoking questions and useful diagrams. I particularly enjoyed the world-building section of the guide in which Athans touches upon geography, monsters, and details like units of measure, weather, and forms of government. If you need a list of elements to help you build a fantastical world, this chapter is for you. The last part delves into the business side of writing, including tips on finding an agent and creating your query letter, with a practical example. At the end is a real treat—a short story, Hugo Mann’s Perfect Soul by R. A. Salvatore.

If you’re looking for a book to guide you through creating your fantasy/science fiction novel, I’d highly recommend this one. Between the covers, you'll find something for writers of all levels, from writing tips to inspiring quotes to motivate you on your writing journey.

I ordered this used in good condition and it did arrive quickly and with small cover defects. There were no notes inside.

I ordered this alongside a few other creative writing fantasy books because I've had multiple creative writing courses and none allowed fantasy. So with that said, this is more of a literal beginning point. It overviews the basics of fantasy, and it doesnt include any writing technique or heavy story building guides. There are no prompts. This is what you read before you even begin your work, and if you have not had any courses, and if you are brand new to fantasy. If you feel you are overwhelmed, I think this would be helpful to recenter yourself.

I read this alongside Putting the Fact in Fantasy, and I believe that book would follow this one pretty nicely. This being a beginning, and Fact in Fantasy being a more inspiring read for when you're ready to create your fantasy world and characters, but needed a lil direction.

Athans has published a well-written, informative book. It was a relatively quick read, and went into several aspects including character, world building and plot.
My only gripe would perhaps be that because so many areas were covered, there was relatively little depth in any of them. The book was not too long that elaboration would be too much. Nevertheless I enjoyed it, and many queries I had were answered (and, at £0.99, it's a bargain!)
