Review

Whenever I read Karen Spears Zacharias, I am struck by the disarming and haunting purity of a child's voice--as if Scout is alive and writing books. Zacharias' sophomore novel, BURDY, is a tender and moving story following broken people who mend equally broken people with the messy glue of mankind--love. Maybe Zacharias can write about the ripple effects of "men and their damn wars" because she's lived through them, heard the doorbell ring, and still got the telegram to prove it. Maybe her words bubble up and out of a heart held together by the same glue. Whatever the source, her authenticity is inviting, and her honesty is brazen and unashamed. Her voice echoes well beyond the last page. ----Charles Martin, New York Times bestselling author of Water from My Heart and A Life Intercepted

Karen Spears Zacharias' new novel offers a full strength dose of reading joy. Tough and warm, sly and wise, BURDY demands a single sitting read. Prepare to be captivated. ----Karen Karbo, author of

The crack of gunshots in a small Tennessee town ignites a lost tale that finds Burdy Luttrell leaving her home in the holler to travel to France on the trail of long-buried family secrets. In prose as clear as spring water and as lyrical as an old-time reel, Zacharias explores the lengths people are willing to go to bury the past and the emotional pitfalls of getting down in the dirt and digging it up. ----Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author of
This Dark Road to Mercy and A Land More Kind Than Home

I want to echo what some others have already said. I had read Mother of Rain and was amazed at the community that surrounded Mazie even if it did not prevent the tragic ending. In Burdy, Karen Zacharias continues the story. Ever intertwined with the Appalachian country, she also takes us on a journey to France to search for some closure to what began in the first book. The Appalachian dialect, the so very-real characters and the story are all woven together as only this author, who draws from her own history, can.

Two years ago I read the wonderful prequel to this book "Mother of Rain" which left me with some unanswered questions. I now have the answers! The World War 2 history in this book was fascinating! The insight into PTSD from Rain's point of view was so heartbreaking. I will say that you MUST read " Mother of Rain " first in order to understand the depth of and grasp the beauty of this book ! Burdy is a wonderful character !!

This is a great book written by a Karen Zacharias who is a great storyteller. As near as I can tell, even though this is a novel, the research regarding eastern Tennessee culture is right on. This is my wife’s home country, which provided verification. Karen Zacharias very effectively wove that culture into the story of “Mother Rain” as well as “Burdy”. Both books were good; however I enjoyed “Burdy” more.

Burdy is a very special character — we first met her in “Mother of Rain” — this book is the second of three, and I look forward to reading the third, “Christian Bend” to experience the next steps for these fabulous characters! Thank you, Karen — job well done!

If you read Mother Of Rain, Zacharias's first novel, you have to read Burdy. This book tells the story of my favorite character in Mother Of Rain, Burdy Lutterll. She is the granny woman of Christian Bend, Tennessee. In this book she needs some healing herself. The story is layered with secrets and tragedy.
