The Thief: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 11,562 ratings

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • New enemies rise and desire burns in the latest thrilling novel of the paranormal romance series the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Sola Morte, former cat burglar and safecracker, has given up her old life on the wrong side of the law. On the run from a drug lord’s family, she is lying low far from Caldwell, keeping her nose clean and her beloved grandmother safe. Her heart, though, is back up north, with the only man who has ever gotten through her defenses: Assail, son of Assail, who never meant to fall in love—and certainly not with a human woman. But they have no future, and not just because she doesn’t know he is a vampire, but because he is not about to stop dealing arms to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Fate, however, has other plans for them. When Assail falls into a coma and lingers on the verge of death, his cousins seek out Sola and beg her to give him a reason to live. The last thing she wants is a return to her past, but how can she leave him to die?

As a lethal new enemy of the vampires shows its face, and the Brotherhood needs Assail back on his feet, Sola finds herself not only a target, but a mission-critical force in a war she doesn’t understand. And when Assail’s truth comes out, will she run from the horror . . . or follow her heart into the arms of the male who loves her more than life itself?

Excellent addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series!

Excellent addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series!
The Thief was another awesome story in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series that was exciting to read. It was easy to slide back into the world and instantly be a part of everything. There was a wonderful mix of humor and drama, and stubbornness, and love and I really enjoyed it!Assail’s story has been building in the last couple of books and I couldn’t wait for him to get it together. I've loved his personal battles and how his love for Marisol helped pulled him back from the brink. I loved Marisol. She's a really strong heroine, a take no prisoners woman. I loved her perseverance and how she takes care of her grandmother. Marisol’s grandmother is priceless and I adored how Assail’s cousins were with her, so sweet. Marisol and Assail coming together was tense and angry as well as heartbreaking and passionate.Vishous and Jane stressed me out. Their issues have been building so I'm glad it finally got addressed. I am thrilled they finally got themselves together. There was so much tension and pain there. I'm glad they finally opened up and reconnected and that it didn't drag out over the entire story. I'm glad Lassiter's new role is starting to be known and some things about the Scribe Virgin were addressed as well. Lassiter is one of my favorite characters and he adds so much to any scene he’s in.As always, the writing was excellent. There's great drama and I thought there was a good progression for the overall storyline. I'm really excited for what's to come in the series, especially Murhder, and what chaos Throe will bring. This was a page-turner for sure! J. R. Ward always knows how to bring it!

    "Destiny was such a thief."

FINAL DECISION: Loved, loved this one and would have been a 5 star but the resolution was just a bit too quick for me. I've been anticipating Sola and Assail's story for years and this one did not disappoint. Plus V and Jane tossed in, new threats and some advancement of the overarching storylines.

THE STORY: Sola Morte, was a thief until an attempt on her life led to her promise to leave Caldwell and make a new and honest life. Hiding in Miami with her dear grandmother, Sola still cannot forget the man she left behind. Assail was who she left behind but unknown to Sola, he is not a man at all but rather a vampire. Assail lies near death after trying to recover from a cocaine addiction. His cousins make a desperate attempt to save Assail by asking Sola to visit Assail.

OPINION: I really enjoyed this book. I've been looking forward to Sola and Assail's story because I enjoy these two complex characters. They are both damaged characters who shift between doing good and doing bad. This book takes place already significantly into their story. Readers of the series will know that they have already begun their romance and cut it off when Sola leaves for Miami. This book recaps, but of course the character development of those earlier encounters is lost in this book.

But having read those early encounters, I love this story. The emotional drama is high from the beginning. Sola comes to Assail at the moment of his rebirth in many ways. The two of them always had a strong connection, and I really feel it in this book where the crisis makes these two people who are closed and secretive open up to one another.

The book is hot because not only do we have Sola and Assail as a couple, but also the continuing story of V and Jane. The two have had some problems recently (which has been shown in prior books). This book brings their lingering problems to a crisis moment.

And that is what brings these two stories together in a thematic way. Here are two couples facing a crisis where their secrets and their separateness threaten to tear them apart.

Although the two stories cross one another, they are separate and distinct narratives. The overlapping themes, however, give this book a wholeness that I don't always feel in the BDB books with the overlapping and multiple narratives.

My only negative in the book is that Sola and Assail's story is resolved too quickly in the end. After building the conflicts and drama and bring it to a head, things get fixed and then the book is over. I think the build up needed some additional space. In this book, I missed that.

    WORTH MENTIONING: Murhder!

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE THIEF is the sixteenth book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I think these books should be read as part of the series. Perhaps a better reader than I could appreciate them as standalones.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

This was a great book as usual. I do not get caught up in the little arguments and commentary about "oh the author should have done this" or the author " should have done that." At least Assail and Marisol have had a furtherance and I am extremely thrilled that murder has come back into the story now as I have been waiting many books for that to happen. I am very interested to see what murder and X and her John will do and whether or not murder story will come into play in the near future.Only question I have is murder was living on discovered in the Attic of that plantation house. That plantation house was a bed and breakfast so I'm interested now to see how Ward is going to explain what has changed with the plantation house and its occupants and why murder is there alone. Great progression. Very glad Victoria is dead. as usual too much cussing and too much JesusGod that but skipping all over that stuff is jutngoing to keep happening because the storyllines are fantastic and the sex Men should be required to readsex scenes in these books as an educational course for What Women Want. It's just a fact. Hurry up Ward and get out the 7th book of the Fallen Angels and the next one in the black Black Dagger Legacy and the next bourbon Kingsso get started writing on the next bdb book if you haven't already. On behalf of bdb readers everywhere I make that a solid request

I've been on the fence about what to write in this review for hours now! I love, love, love the BDB series! I was so excited for this book! All in all it was a good read and a nice little taste of the BDB world we all miss so much between books, with a few exceptions..... I was disappointed that there were basically little-no appearances by any characters aside from the main four. (Assail/Sola, V/Jane) Especially following The Chosen where almost everyone in the BDB world is involved. None of the woman even made an appearance really. If there was a male BDB mentioned, they had little to no dialogue. I was also hoping to learn more about Jo Early, the XCor/Layla/Quinn situation and how The Bastards are adjusting but there was very little mentioned on Jo and absolutely nothing on the newly formed family unit or The Bastards. It almost feels as though nothing major really happened in this book. So now that I've gotten the negatives out of the way, here are the things I liked. The story itself is a sweet love story and well written. People that have been waiting for Assail/Sola's book will love it I think. And we finally get the V/Jane issue that's been going on for some time now brought to the forefront, which makes me happy. I like the Assail/Grandma/Sola interactions. There was a lot of funny and cute dialogue between the three of them and it made them very relatable. I of course love the "Ward slang" that is in all the BDB books and being that V is a main character, we got quite a few "true's" and "F you very much's" throughout the story. And of course there are quite a few sex scenes that do not disappoint. Although this is not my favorite book in the series, it is still a good book. I think that maybe this book is the calm before the storm and the next one will just blow our minds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the BDB World!
Reviewed in Italy on January 5, 2021
I’m back into the BDB World! I’ve missed my Brothers. And this 16th book hasn’t disappointed me.
I loved V & Jane so much. They’re struggling in their relationship and are on the edge of a failure. Only a “fatal” event and some new revelations from Lassiter to V, will bring them back together and stronger than ever.
Pieces of the puzzle that V is trying so hard to put together are finally coming together.
And a new and mysterious enemy is endangering the species. I’m really curious to see how this will unfold in the next books.
I loved Sola & Assail, but more than the two of them I loved the unusual family they formed: Sola and her vovó, Assail and his cousins Ehric and Evale, and Markus the freed blood slave. Even in the worst and unexpected moments, they stick together as a loving family does.
This book is engaging from beginning to end, never a dull moment… okay, that’s not true: Vitoria was boring and adding nothing to the story; the end of the book seems a little bit rushed.
Now I can’t wait to read how the war with the new enemy with be handled and to read about Murhder.
Oh, and Saxton & Ruhn? Need more of their story!
To be honest this is 4 four stars read, but I give it 5 for the pleasure it has given me reading this series after being away so long from this world.
