- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2017I recently discovered the documentary film “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy” on Amazon Video. I knew very little about what happened to the cruiser USS Indianapolis in 1945, so I decided to watch the film. It is truly outstanding.
In July 1945, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis had departed from the Marianas Islands, where it had delivered parts for the atomic bomb that would eventually destroy Hiroshima. While sailing for a new assignment in the Philippines. Two nights after the Indianapolis departed Guam, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship quickly sank, taking eight hundred sailors down with it. Nearly four hundred managed to jump into the Pacific Ocean.
Because the Navy had not received any distress signals from the sinking ship, it did not dispatch any ships or planes to search for it. As a result, four hundred oil-soaked, starving, dehydrated, sun-scorched sailors floated for five days waiting to be rescued. The men were under constant attack from sharks. Many who survived the sinking of their ship died in the water. Finally, on the fifth day after the sinking, a Navy aircraft flying overhead saw them in the water and radioed for assistance.
In this film, the survivors and their family members of the USS Indianapolis recount their ordeal with tremendous candor. Most of these people are now in their seventies and eighties, and yet it is amazing how clearly they remember nearly every detail of what happened to them on that fateful night. Many of them became quite emotional as they recounted their personal experiences.
One aspect of the Indianapolis sinking that I did not know until I watched this video is what happened to her skipper afterward. Captain Charles McVay survived that night, and was later brought up on charges of dereliction of duty for “failure to zig-zag” to avoid enemy submarines. He was court-martialed and convicted. The other Indianapolis survivors rallied to their skipper’s defense and waged a decades-long campaign to clear his name. They were successful, but not until 32 years after Captain McVay took his own life.
As I watched “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy,” I found myself completely engrossed in the stories of courage, despair, and tragedy that were told by the survivors. This is one of the best documentaries about World War II I have seen in many years. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2017I'm an "old" former US Army Officer now. As such, I love reading and watching non-fictional stories about the history of war, warfare and the sacrifices made by the sons and daughters of our nation in these times of need. This is a well told story using first hand accounts delivered openly and emotionally by a handful of remaining survivors of the sinking. The USS Indianapolis carried the second of two atomic weapons to be used on the Island nation of Japan. After delivering this second weapon into the hands of those who would fly it to its target, the warship was torpedoed and sunk while steaming home. After an unbelievable and controversial series of mistakes, the ship went unreported as sunk for over 5-days. During those 5-days a crew of over 1100 officers and enlisted were dwindled to a mere 318 final sailors who would be pulled from the waters of the South Pacific. Death buy enemy torpedoes, fire, drowning, exposure to the elements, and unrelenting shark attacks--so many lost their lives. But that was just the beginning of the story. The new feature film staring Nick Cage does not do the story justice--this documentary does. You should see it to fully grasp the magnitude of the tragedy, the US Navy coverup, as well as the scapegoating of the ship's Captain in an effort to mitigate the negative publicity for the Chief of Naval Operations. A horrible sacrifice of a Captain loved by his men over his alleged misuse of a zig-zagging tactic. A tactic the commander of the enemy submarine testified at the court martial, [Would have made no difference whatsoever were it used--I would have sunk the Indianapolis regardless. I had position, and the US warship could not escape.] Regardless, someone had to be sacrificed so that others could save face. Watch it if you are a lover of military history, or if you feel knowing a survivor's version of such a horrific story is worthy of your time. It was certainly worth mine.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2016Extremely well done film by producer/director Sara Vladic and her crew. This story was very long overdue for a "well made" to watch DVD documentary. I have already read most of the books on this topic which are excellent. I have also seen most of the films on the subject, them being a movie or documentary. Those did try to do proper justice to honor these brave sailors. However, this one excels to an extent so well crafted, that I had to keep pausing it at times. Why pause? The rare never before seen photos, illustrations and re-enacted videos that move by so quickly that make you want to pause and simply look at a historical image never seen before. This is why I am glad I purchased the actual DVD, as opposed to streaming or whatever.
If you have not seen this yet, I would recommend to go ahead and purchase it, as opposed to renting, if this subject has a valued interest to you. The reason being is that I'm not even sure how long this product is going to be available. I don't believe it's being well distributed. I would be shocked if I saw one at a local Walmart or Target or any other retail chain. I bought my copy through Amazon just before the Thanksgiving weekend and received it on Saturday of this weekend.
This is the kind of material that history teachers can show their students. I honestly think is might be the last time these survivors will be heard from again in video regarding the Indy. The makers of this film spent at least 10 years or more putting it all together. If I sound like a promotional ad for this DVD I am sorry. I'm simply just another history buff and have no association to it other than saying they did a great job. Even better said than Quint himself, because unlike Robert Shaw, these are the guys who were actually there and lived to tell us about it. A+.

After browsing through what's in the way of a good video, I came across a few different copies of the story of the USS INDIANAPOLIS, I decided to buy one of them. After viewing it, I decided that it wasn't worth what I had paid for it. So, I went back to Amazon and decided on copy number 2. This one turned out to also be a waste of my money. So, a week or so later, I decided to try my luck one last time......and bought a Winner,....USS INDIANAPOLIS....THE LEGACY. In the end, I realised I had finally found what I was looking for, the best copy of the story of the ill-fated USS INDIANAPOLIS. I had just 15 minutes ago, finished viewing it in full and couldn't wait to write this. This copy, by SERENDIPITY & TINY HORSE AND (OF COURSE) PBS. It seems to me that it is extremely hard to find such a well informed and well put together story such as this .....and virtually made....in full, by a number of women who have put together such a well informed and documented story as this,.....and made it the best copy available. So, for anyone who is interested in this terrible incident, then this is the copy for you to buy.
