Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Brandishing her outrageously sly sense of humor, Cole (Mommy Laid an Egg) tweaks the topic of puberty in all of its glory, with predictably boisterous results. Here, in response to a girl's query to her teddy bear about the process of growing up, she whips up "Mr. and Mrs. Hormone" and their dog, a vile little trio who "live inside you" and "mix the potions that turn children into adults." Typical of Cole's no-holds-barred approach, the girl's parents are used as examples ("your mom sprouted small bosoms and hair in funny places"). She touches briefly on everything from menstruation ("She found a tiny drop of blood in her underpants") to acne and body odor ("He wanted to kiss the girls but Mr. and Mrs. Hormone had made him pimply and smelly"), erections ("Inside his penis, Mr. Hormone was lurking with another dollop of the mixture. This made it grow big and small whenever it wanted") and nocturnal emissions ("some sticky stuff actually came out"). The watercolors are equally candid, and the gleeful depictions of naked bodies may raise adults' eyebrows but children will laugh out loud. Cole's madcap style leaves no room for embarrassment; it could pave the way for more informative discussions between kids and adults. Ages 7-up. (June)

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-While there is a plethora of sex-education books for young readers, this picture book concentrates on how hormones affect young people during puberty. Ted, an animated stuffed bear, explains to his young owner about her parents' entry into adolescence. "Mr. and Mrs. Hormone-are in charge of growing up-[they] mix the potions that turn children into adults." The physical and emotional effects of their concoctions are discussed, including hair growth, pimples, menstruation ("Then she found a tiny drop of blood in her underpants!"), and wet dreams ("Then some sticky stuff actually came out"). No biological terms are used-only surface descriptions. As in so many of her books, Cole tackles this subject with lighthearted humor. The illustrations are a partner in the storytelling. Mr. and Mrs. Hormone are depicted as grotesque, pimple-covered, horned, hairy, and rotund mad scientists. The sweet-faced pubescent teens react honestly to their body changes with exuberance, worry, and anger. The naked cartoon characters have no modesty. While this title does not explain reproduction, it does serve as a loose introduction to hormonal change. Unfortunately, the breezy, irreverent style that's evident in both the text and illustrations limits the book's appeal to its target audience. Thus, its value is supplemental, not essential.

I read it to my 6 yr old and 10 yr old boys. They loved the hair in funny places and giggled at penises but also listened and liked that everyone was different. We needed to have a quick talk about semen (I've never talked about that part with them so that was the only thing they were confused about/wanting to know about). My 6 yr old and 9 yr old girls briefly listened to some. 9 yr old (who's scared of blood....) said gross at the bleeding and was done. I wish I could stop the inevitable. LOL overall great intro book into puberty and a good place to start with very simple and correct information presented with humor and fun illustrations.

This book gives a funny twist to hormones. A girl asks her stuffy about growing up. The stuffy tells the story of these mini-monsters (Mr and Mrs Hormone) that were inside her mom and dad when they were young and what puberty looked like for each. It was refreshing to see both the male and female together in one book.

This book is light and gives conversations a place to start.

It covers pubic hair, breasts, underarm hair, mood swings, acne, spotting and then monthly bleeds for females. It covers pubic, underarm, chest and facial hair, broadening shoulders, penis development, erections and wet dreams, acne, odor and voice changes for males.

I bought this on the recommendation of a mother with sons older than mine. My son was 10/11 at the time and she thought it was an amusing way to pave the way for a more serious discussion. It was too simplistic for him and he pooh-poohed it, but my 6/7 year old daughter was fascinated by it. Now that she's 9 and facing these issues herself, it's helpful for us to use this book as a non-threatening explanation of what's happening with her. I think it's successful because she did have the earlier introduction to it.

Witty and light-hearted, it still is factual and clear. Definitely worth using.

I started puberty in elementary school and my LO is displaying signs early too. The simple explanations and cartoonish aspects are perfect. Not to mention she is on the spectrum so all the pictures really helped her understand. I'm so glad I bought this book and just thankful there was something available on her level.

Not appropriate for younger girls. It’s great about the female body but the male part...”his penis is thickens and white stuff comes out so he’s ready to have a baby” not ok for my kids. Wish I never bought it. Too late to return and I don’t know anyone I’m willing to give it to.

I loved the illustrations. The book is written in a very simple format, easy to understand. I think if it were given as a gift, the giver should make sure that the parents of the child reaching the book has approved it. Some parents might think it was inappropriate for their children.

The book depicts hormones as ugly, dirty monsters inside your body. Not exactly a great start. I assumed it was just about girls (as it only has a girl on the cover), but it cover boys and girls equally. My five-year-old daughter picked it out to have me read to her, and I was comfortable with the level of nudity and explicitness. Sperm and erections are brought up, but not pictured. He three-year-old brother poked his head in and had a question or two, but mostly wasn't interested.

Two other weaknesses are that every single character in the book is white. Not just the two adolescents featured. And hormones cause them to be attracted to the opposite sex, with no room for other experiences of adolescence and sexual attraction.

I love this book. You've got to have a sense of humor about it. I won't show my niece til she's 12. My nephew is 13 and very mature, so he was able to laugh at the book but also get educated. I had no puberty education when I was young and the things happening to my body scared me. I didn't tell anyone. I wish someone would have showed me a book like this so I would have known what I was going through was normal and I was ok.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - bought for 7 year old, fun and extremely helpful!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 15, 2012
I really didn't know how to address my 7 year old daughters questions and I really wish I would have just told her when she was ALOT younger. I had told her how the baby comes out of my belly when she was about 4 years old because she had asked and that was the end of that but I think because I had waited so long with these questions it all got a bit awkward and embarrassing. I bought Hair In Funny Places, Where Willy Went and Mummy Laid An Egg and she read them in that order. We all sat down, me, her daddy and her 15 year old sister and she read the books aloud and giggled and laughed and looked confused all the way through. She then asked tons of questions and we went through the books again and that was that.

I honestly don't know how I would have done it without these books, she's asked for further books as she still doesn't understand how the baby grows from nothing and where the baby gets it 'bones and hair' from so she is still a bit confused but loves reading the books as she said that she has learned so much. 5 stars! ---> *****
