It Was So Hokey And I Loved It!

I certainly did not expect this to be so entertaining. Vampires or zombie-vampires? Don't know! But the movie had my attention from start to finish. Yes, it was quirky and content that some may consider objectionable really was not, compared to the stuff usually associated with vampires. The main characters were perfectly portrayed by actors I'm not familiar with and made the movie super cheesy, in a good way!. The heroic night watchmen with their unique personalities added a terrific amount of humor and the girl was so ridiculous in her antics. I was laughing out loud in spite of the violent visuals and all the blood.

The scene with the guy's thumb stuck in a zombie's forehead, the co-worker who was forced to dance, the smell emitted after a zombie dies are just a few of the crazy things that had me chuckling. Shame on me! I started feeling guilty for enjoying the movie so much because it was after all pretty darn gory! Actually, what was really disturbing/creepy, to me, was the vampire running like a spider on the ceiling and the frenzy of the female vampires. In addition, clowns have always given me the creeps and the Romanian clown in this silly movie just gave me another reason to steer clear of them!

Yep, it was definitely very corny and violent but I think the humor overshadowed the dark theme, making it a darn good movie! Maybe one of the best I've come across, mainly because it is not your run of the mill
vampire story which has become so stale since Brahm Stoker popularized the creatures many moons ago.

I thought this movie would probably stink. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was freakin' hilarious. It's similar to Bloodsucking Bastards. If you liked that, you'll like this. Lots of humor about being a security guard, first night on the job FNG jitters, white vs blue collar tension, sexual tension, and vampire clowns. It could have been set anywhere, but being in Baltimore, it could have used more shout-outs to Harm City. I've spent a lot of time in Baltimore over the years and it would have been hilarious to see more famous landmarks and local culture tossed in. Seeing the Natty Bo Man, Fell's Point, Federal Hill, etc would have been cool, but that's just me. If you're going to set it in Balitmore, why not throw in crab cakes and Natty Bo or Flying Dog at a minimum? Non-Baltimorans would miss the references completely, I guess, but those in the know would get a laugh out of it. The only nitpick I have is any vampire attempting to take on Baltimore would have one hell of a time. I think gangsters would nip that in the bud post-haste. The cast was great, the jokes were great, and the premise was hilarious. Watch it with some beers and some friends and you'll have a good time.

Sure it is cheesy, but with enough humor to make it enjoyable. Blimpo the Clown and his troupe dies of a mysterious illness while in Romania, and their bodies are shipped to the US for autopsy. The coffin of Blimpo gets delivered my mistake to the newspaper building. At night, there is the night watch, a collection of guards who expect to get through doing very little. One of the employees of the newspaper, Randal, opens the coffin, seeking to steal any jewelry. That unleashed Blimpo and the entire troupe of zombie/vampires. It becomes very madcap, and there are a lot of simply great lines. One of the women comes for help, but no one recognizes her. She said "I've worked here for three years, and we carpooled together". They call 911, but the recording says there is a six hour wait. A lot of it is simply over the top, and also a lot of fun. "Willy, stop being such a baby, you are already dead." And when the vampire is killed, it lets out a terrible smelling fart, which becomes a running joke. Hey, some of the humor is quite juvenile. And there are buckets of blood shooting all over. Yes, stupid but funny.

Ok, I am NOT going to give this a '5-star review' considering that it is, at best, a B-movie. As far as B-movies go, it's campy, it's fun, and it's pretty well acted with the expected 'lower-end special effects' associated with lower-budget films. The beginning has a 'lower-than-average' Attack-of-the-Killer-Tomatoes feel to it, but it does get better as the show goes on. That said, IT'S STILL A B-MOVIE FLICK! Do not expect Transformers, World War Z or Die Hard out of this movie. It is NOT a 4 or 5-star movie, no matter what all the 'campy off-mainstream movie reviewers say! It is a B-Movie (I know, I said that already, but hey, it is what it is). Want to play something while doing dishes, this is the scream and howl movie to put on. Want to laugh at those 'who are more foolish then you would be in the same situation'? Get the drinks and let the fun begin. Looking for 'Interview with the Vampire'? You're in the wrong place!

it's a horror action comedy. slapstick satire type. i think this movie knows it is a silly joke. it is not as good as shaun of the dead/army of the dead but it is still a darn good movie, if you happen to like those types. and as far as indie movies go, it is def one of the better ones i've seen lately. it mocks many of the cliches. there is humor. i didnt find it laugh out loud funny, but i didnt need it to be to find in enjoyable.
if you watch it and hate it, try removing the stick out of your a55 and try watching it again. if you still hate it, make an appt with your doctor to have that bug wedged way up in you removed.
i dont think this is a 5 star movie, but i want to help keep the score way up cuz i like it enough that i think others should give this a shot. amazon stream.

This is a horror comedy, with an emphasis on the comedy. Joke after joke after joke. But, they're nearly all misses, just mistimed or off over and over. It's just not funny. As a horror movie, it doesn't work that well either - it's not scary or creepy or atmospheric. It's just all goofy. And then the goofs don't work. So it's just boring.

Regisseur Mitchell Altieri ("The Thompsons", "The Hamiltons"; "Holy Ghost People") inszenierte mit "The Night Watchmen" eine optisch überzeugende, im 2.39:1-Bildformat vorliegende Low-Budget-Produktion, die allerdings auf inhaltlicher Ebene nur wenig zu bieten hat. Das auf humorvolle Unterhaltung abzielende Drehbuch ist nach einem gelungenen Auftakt insbesondere in der zweiten Hälfte relativ langatmig. Die unaufhaltsam präsentierten Gags wirken manchmal etwas gezwungen und pendeln zwischen erstklassigen Lachern und doch eher stumpfsinnigem Klamauk hin und her.
Während die Gore- und Splatter-Einlagen gemessen am geringen finanziellen Rahmen relativ gut gelungen und sehr blutig sind, ist die Synchronisation nur von durchschnittlicher Qualität und die auf ein Bürogebäude begrenzten Szenenbilder lassen zumindest partiell Sparzwänge erkennen. Der moderne Soundtrack passt und die Schauspieler agieren mit Spaß an der Sache, schießen allerdings bisweilen etwas über das Ziel hinaus.
- - - Fazit: "The Night Watchmen" nimmt sich selbst nicht ernst und parodiert Sowohl das Zombie-, als auch das Vampir- und Killerclown-Motiv. Anfänglich noch unterhaltsam, ist die wenig Spannung bietende und arg konstruierte Handlung selbst bei einer geringen Laufzeit von nur rund 75 Minuten auf Dauer etwas ermüdend, wenngleich sie immerhin ansehnliche Effekte aufzuweisen hat.
Eine Empfehlung kann für Fans des Genres ausgesprochen werden, insofern sie der Produktion nicht mit zu hohen Erwartungen begegnen. Anders als es das DVD-Cover suggeriert, ist das zu Sehende trotz überzeugender Masken nicht wirklich unheimlich. Für Gelegenheitskonsumenten bietet der Film vermutlich zu wenig Essenz.
